I am a rank newbie to machine embroidey. My machine is the Brother elcheapo but it does a good job.
For Christmas, everyone is getting a fleece throw with their name embroidered on it. The Brother has a 4" hoop and I bought a larger one but don't know how to program to use the big hoop.

Some of the relatives have long names which is really not thoughtful of their parents but there you have it. I have tried to squeeze the names on to the trial runs but they end up being very small and totally out of proportion to the whole throw.

I don't want to put initials on the great grand children's. They are 2 and 3 and initials seem a bit grown up.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this? Your help would be greatly appreciated.

Your machine's embroidery area doesn't change with the size of the hoop (unfortunately). If you buy a hoop larger than your embroidery area you have to split the design to make it work.

I think that in this case you have to physically reset the machine..not exactly sure how you access the upper area. My machine is self-splitting up to 16 inches so I don't have to worry about it. The hoop that I have that is not for the self-splitting (23") is on a track...if your machine's larger hoop is on a track, you just adjust and draw the track into the stitch area and go on.

The normal advantage to having the larger hoop is that you can hoop an entire area larger than your stitch field and not have to rehoop, align and straighten (which is an experience in learning all by itself).

When it comes to splitting designs, this almost has to be done in software, but when it comes to doing names, if your machine has built in alphabets, you can just do it in the machine.

By far the easiest way to do it is with initials with the smaller stitch field (sometimes with the larger ones too).

If you could be more specific on the model and which larger hoop we might be able to give you some tips.
There are ways to accomplish embroidering designs too large for your sewing field. However, as Pam pointed out it is much easier with more versatile machines.
Does your selling dealer not have classes (or 1 on 1 help) on this sort of thing?
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

depending on which machine you have... Brother does have a multi-position hoop for some of their 4x4 machines... it has 3 attachment pins on the hoop, instead of just 2 and you simply remove the hoop from the machine (but keep the fabric in the hoop) and move to the next two pins.... so, with the pins in a row, with #1 being at the top... the first time you put the hoop on the machine, you attach with pins 1 and 2... when you move the hoop to do the next part of the name (or design) you move the hoop to pins 2 and 3.... you could check on the Brother website and see if there is a multi-position hoop listed as an accessory for your particular machine...

Do you have a little brother 150 or the 180D? I have a 180D (the mickey mouse machine) for long names I use the multihoop, it is set so you can do 3 overlapping 4" frames but is 4x8 inches. For long names set your garment fabric etc. In the Alphabet/lettering area select Multicolour, this will stop the machine after every letter and create a jump stitch point after each letter, so for JEANETTE in large letters you would embroider JEAN move the hoop (DO NOT remove the fabric from the hoop) and set it two notches down and the align your needle at START with the jump stitch left from the multicolour jump stitch and then do ETTE. Using this technique you can do up to an 8 letter name. Practice a couple of times so you can see what I mean. This is the only way to do it on this machine without the pedesign software and a blank card.
Have fun, I like my little brother machine. Just got the Dora the Explorer card!!

Hi Spinnersilver - I know which Brother you are talking about - did you buy a hoop that has 3 sections, or to put it more plainly, can you hook this hoop to your machine in three places? If you can, then you must split your designs into two or three sections of the hoop. Since the Brother can only sew a 4x4 designs, the designs need to be split into separate sections. You will need a computer software program to do this, one such as Buzz Tools Edit. This program will allow you to split your design and then stitch into the separate sections of the hoop. You will just be moving the hoop and not rehooping the fabric. Another way to do this, is to embroider what will fit in the hoop, and then remove the fabric and re-hoop and hope that you get it to start again in the right spot. This will be tricky, but with some practice, I have done it. Your other alternative would be to reduce the size of the design so all will fit. I have a Simplicity, made by Brother, which is actually the same machine. It's a great little machine and does a good job. I also have the larger hoop that allows you to split a design and sew in three sections. After splitting the design in your software, you will download it to your card. The machine will show the three sections of the design, and then you just move the hoop (not the fabric) to the next section. Check out some inexpensive software that will allow you to split the designs. I thought Buzz Tools was the least expensive of the bunch.

Good luck -
