Has anyone made Simplicity 5074? (I tried to copy a picture of it here, but I'm not that technically savvy). It's one of the Khaliah Ali patterns. I'm wondering how the bust and sleeves went together for you. I'm a DD cup and am not sure how to enlarge this style to accommodate. And, I've never made these kind of sleeves. The instructions don't look hard, but wanted to hear it from someone who's been there and done that. Any help would be appreciated Shelly Moon

I hate alterations! There! I said it...now, where were we...ok.... The thing is that large bust alterations are NORMALLY made across the garment. In a case like this you can end up with some gaps, so let's look at it a little differently. When doing flat pattern you can have side darts, darts from the bottom, darts divided betweent the side and the bottom and you can interchange those with gathers (not normally done on the side.) Where I am going with this is that when you do a side dart and want to move it to below the bust you cut a square in the pattern to the bust point and pivot the pattern to move the dart. I think that in this case you can probably move the full bust change to the area under the bust and gather it as they have. This avoids the "mess at the center front where you could end up with gaps if it is too long. This is one of those cases where I would have to make a muslin and try it before I made it, but I think that this alteration could be done. As far as the bust is concerned, the sleeves are not a fitting issue. The bust is below the sleeves. i don't know if these sleeves have a facing or just a hem but if they are hemmed, they'll be like hemming dish towels. They do not appear to be split all the way to the underarm, just shaped as a modified rectangle. They appear to be just set in sleeves. The bigger issue will be in the bust alteration. pam

Shelly Moon, Please post your experience on this item. I'm interesting in making this top too and also have the bust alteration issue. I'd love to see a picture when you finish too! SweetPea |

Here is a link to a review of this pattern on patternreview: http://sewing.patternreview.com/cgi-bin/readreview.pl?readreview=1&reviewnum=12203 The reviewer did mention there was quite a bit of room in the bust. HTH! Jen |

Thank you blessedmommy! I am shaped a whole bunch like the lady in the photo, (only I'm a bit larger than her in the bust), so this review was VERY helpful. I figured it would show too much of the girls up top, just like she said, so I was already planning to adjust the angle so nothing would fall out at the improper time. (wink, wink). I love sew-what's-new...there's always someone out there who knows what you need to know...and they're willing to share it with you! Shelly Moon

You are very welcome. Glad I could help. You can go to the home page on the Pattern Review website and type in the number of any pattern in the search box, and more than likely, someone has reviewed it Jen |
