Hi: I don't know if I'm posting to the proper section. Has anyone ever used a Ruby Beholder? It has something to do with the value of fabric color instead of just the color as with a color wheel, I think? I live in Canada and have never heard of it, it was offered for saler on a site in the U.S. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks. |

I know that you can put a red filter over fabric to work out the tonal depth of fabrics - or alternatively photocopy the fabrics to see which ones are 'darker' and d'lighter' regardles of colour - perhaps it is something like that? This is guesswork you understand.. but googling 'ruby beholder' comes up with this.. "Ruby beholder - Love the name! A ruby beholder is a tool that quilters use to find the value of a fabric. Fabrics of different colors and/or prints can be laid side by side and viewed through this instrument to see their relative values. " oooooooo, when I am hot I'm hot! love and kisses, Jan

As I understand it, it's a piece of red colored plastic that you hold close to your eyes and look through at a selection of fabric to help you determine the values in the fabrics. Trouble is, it won't work on reds or purples that have a lot of reds in them. For that you need a green value tool. I read in a quilting tip book somewhere where the person recommended just getting a plastic colored report cover (the kind you have to buy for school kids in the office supply stores) in red and in green. I've also read where you could use your digital camera to take a picture of the fabric, then when you load it on to your computer you choose the option to display it in only black and white. Haven't tried that one yet. Katie |

The "ruby beholder" is just red plastic....I've had one and used it for years (back in my gizmo phase) and you can use the red report cover or digital image in black and white. For me....and this is just my personal experience because I work with lots of scraps....it helps me not to weigh down a certain area with all darker fabric which sometimes creates a secondary design. Only problem ..... red colored fabrics are washed out because of the red filter. Oh well...... Patty

Only problem ..... red colored fabrics are washed out because of the red filter. Oh well...... Patty, that's why they have the green ones too. I was told last weekend that the green is also for people who have an astigmatism. They sometimes have trouble seeing the values using the red so they can use the green. I have an astigmatism and have always had trouble seeing the values with the RB. So I am gonna try a green one. TTFN from

Many thanks for all your information on the Ruby Beholder, am going to get one and give it a try. I have problems when picking out colors of fabrics for quilting, this might give me a better idea. Again many thanks. We have Snow! |

Would this have helped my sister then? When her basement was flooded she had to repaint the patched and repaired walls and decided to just use up paint leftover from her living room walls upstairs. To her surprise no one can really tell the basement wall has gone from green to a sandy beige colour. Would this be because the two colours have about the same value? |

Yep...could be but it could be because the old green colour has faded over time and is closer to the sandy beige. I had the same thing happen. I painted my living room a tan that was in the green tone. I had to paint the stairway since the living room wall runs up the stairs. I stopped at the end of the wall in the upstairs hallway. Then a year later, I decided to paint the upstairs hallway the lighter colour on the same paint chip. When I finished painting you couldn't even tell that the hallway was a different colour.

Thanks Judee. For some reason I'm just noticing now that the Parliament buildings are in your sign-on picture. My adult skating club will be going to Ottawa for the 8th time this year to skate on the canal. Hopefully. Last year they didn't get on, wasn't thick enough when they were there. Praying for lots of cold weather this winter for your area, hope you are a skater too. |

My adult skating club will be going to Ottawa for the 8th time this year to skate on the canal....hope you are a skater too. Yep, I'm a skater although not a "great" skater. This means that I can skate down the canal and back but don't ask me to stop real quick!!! Just bought some new skates last week since I have been using the same skates for 30+ years. But they weren't used much a lot of those years, LOL. I work three blocks from the canal and walk over to the huts at the National Arts Centre to put on my skates. I try to skate every day on my lunch hour when the canal is open. Last year was one of the shortest skating seasons, here are a couple of pics pic 1 (http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=305698493&context=photostream&size=l), pic 2 (http://flickr.com/photo_zoom.gne?id=305698495&size=l) Let me know when you come to town and we can try to get together.
