This is a new fabric on the market. They say it handles like a cotton knit or rayon. Wazoodle has some for those interested.
http://wazoodle.com/bamboo/ along with interlock and velour.

Has anyone tried it yet?

Are you referring to the one called Modal? There were a few on that page. I LOVE modal! I wondered how eco-friendly it could be, honestly. I bought 2 sets of modal knit sheets at Linens N Things for my daughter's bed, and they are like heaven! They were also pretty inexpensive, for heaven anyway! There was a little card attached to the package, saying that modal was made with fibers from beech trees. I made up her bed, daydreaming about going out to buy another sheet set to make up some jammies for us all. Then a few days later I found a cute little dress in a modal/lycra blend at Old Navy. Sure enough she wears it to bed instead of daytime, b/c it's just so comforting! I will say that it's fairly weak fiber, requiring gentle laundering. One of her sheet sets already has a couple of tiny holes in it, and the same goes for the sweet little dress.

...uh...oh, I see, you meant the one made with bamboo fibers. Sorry to throw the thread astray! Bamboo does make sense, since it's a grass and so sustainable. I have seen yarns in a local knitting shop made out of bamboo fibers, and all kinds of other stuff too. Still, Modal is new and interesting too!

Oh! I like that and I love knits! I have a bamboo woven which is wonderfully soft and fluid, but with just enough oomph to keep its shape. I plan on making a skirt with it since I am on vacation and have a whole week to myself. It's got an interesting weave, too. I'll have to take a picture since it's hard to describe.

I just received a yard of the black bamboo. It feels yummy, very light and fine. I will be prewashing today. It acts like rayon or pure cotton so I want to get any shrinkage out of the way before I cut something out.

I have not seen the fabric, but I did buy DD a lightweight sweater that is a blend of silk, bamboo and lycra (if I remember right). It has wonderful drape and a nice feel. I'll let you know how it washes up after the laundry gets done this weekend LOL.

I pre-washed and have a top almost done. It is very fine and really drapes nicely. Very light weight. I will post a picture when I am done. Feels very silky.

Washed the sweater over the weekend. It said not to run it through the dryer, so I hung it up. It came out just fine. Eventually though, DD or DH will be doing the laundry and that sucker will end up in the dryer. So Mary, I'm glad to know it will tumble out all right!

How can bamboo feel so silky? I'm amazed!

The picture of my top is very boring. Long sleeved T shirt and black. Anyway, it washes lovely, I hung to dry and it feels like silk. Very lightweight too.

By the way, the bamboo is from Wazoodle. It is 60" wide, and a circular knit. I made my top from one metre/yard of the bamboo rather than the two they asked for. That's because the circular knit gives two fold lines to cut on. Keep this in mind when you order.

Hi Mary,

Could you elaborate on circular knit? I think I know what your talking about but have never heard of it.

Hi. A circular knit has no selvage edges, it is a knit tube.

I'm allergic to all grass...now if I'm allergic to grass, will I be allergic to bamboo ??? (I'm allergic to all wool, so lotion with lanolin is OUT as is wearing or even touching wool.)
I've never been around live bamboo.(what they sell in stores as heavenly bamboo or shrubs that are 'red' bamboo actually aren't.)

Something to ponder till I can touch some I guess.:bg:

Chrys,
Perhaps you can order or request a swatch and see if bamboo will cause an allergic reaction. I, too, am allergic to all grass, but have no reaction to bamboo fabric or processed rafia. Maybe it's only the pollen that is the allergen. At least with a swatch, you can test it without a significant outlay of cash.
