Also on the subject of making my daughter's wedding dress - I would like to incorporate a 'message' for her which hopefully will then be kept forever along with the dress. I had thought of embroidering something along a seam allowance or somehow stitching in some sort of 'good-luck charm': Has anyone any better ideas or experience?

I did that for my daughters' wedding dress, I didn't have an embroidery machine at the time so I got my sister to make it up for me. I made a 'label' which was about 3x3 in white satin, same as the dress, and had the embroidery done in a very very pale pink. Satin stitched around the edges, then carefully fraychecked the edges and cut it out. Then I hand sewed it into the back of the dress. When she went to put on the dress, she saw it, read it, and we both cried. It was a great moment!!

How about something done on a hankie? It could be tack to the inside of the dress, then removed afterwards and kept some where else? I have seen where they have had the hankie framed or place in the wedding scrapbook for safe keeping.

We have a wedding hankie that was carried by my mom , my sister, myself, my sister's daughter...and it is back to my daughter. It is very special. I think the hankie maybe attached in the skirt or bodice with a message would be lovely then it could be removed and carried by her children.

I've used prayer boxes for brides - sewn into the skirt seam. They're teeny little boxes that open, you can put a short prayer (saying, etc) inside and seal it up, then sew it into the seam.

One seamstress tradition I have heard of is to place a hair in the hem of the gown. Then you are always with it. ( Of course she will not know unless you tell her.:bg: ) I once had a bride request blue bows sewn inside the skirt around her hem, it was a family tradition, but I never got all the details.
Since you are making the gown, she will always cherish it. There must be something personal or traditional unique to your family. It will come to you.

Lady Di had a small gold horseshoe sewn into the hem of her gown (the marriage wasn't great but the dress was amazing!)

Maybe the horseshoe was sewn on upside down.

the horseshoe worked, she just ended up looking at the wrong end of the horse...er I mean prince....

Love the idea of a message inside the dress. I may do something like that to next thing I make for DD

My Mom took out the ribbon hangers and replaced them with 1/2 wide ribbon and used a gold pen and wrote me a little message on the ribbon and then sewed it on the inside of my dress. I intend to do the same thing when my daughter gets married. Hopefully she will wear my dress and I can just add more hangers and leave my Mom's message for her to see, too.
