Hello Everyone

My name is Charlotte, 36 y/o and I live in Glasgow, Scotland. I have been sewing on and off for 20+ years (mainly off) but I am getting back into it with gusto.

I am interested in tackling anything but would very much like to expand my skills on clothes making. I recently made a couple of bags (a tote and a zip) for a friend and am pleased with myself on how they both turned out (I'm very fussy about my work - if it doesn't look right it doesn't feel right).

I am very interested in advancing my skills from novice to somewhat experienced and hope I can be able to call upon the more experienced for any help which I know I will need.

Please feel free to contact me - I would love to hear from you.

With thanks and blessings.

Charlotte

...for a warm welcome to SWN.

In response to SewHappie's question I have attached a link to a map of Scotland locating Glasgow. It's the best one I could find so I hope it helps. You might have to copy and paste the link into the search bar.

With thanks and blessings.

Wow...Scotland....with all the different places represented on SWN, I wish we could hear each other talk, rather than just read what is being said. I want to hear Magot and you sit down and have a conversation. Would it be like that scene in Austin Powers where he and his dad speak English but no one can make out all the colloquialisms LOL?

I want to vacation in Scotland just once. Don't exactly know why, but I just do. Would love to hear more about your country!

Nice to have you join the club, Charlotte - ignore their comments about accents - there are enough Canadians, Texans, Okies. people from the Deep South etc to make enough of a cacophany without us.

Any questions and it is often a good idea to search the archive - a lot of things have been answered akready and it saves waiting for a reply. Don't let that stop you from quizzing us all though, we are a bunch of people who love to offer advice!

Hi Ladies

I feel as though I have deceived you and I am very sorry. I should have explained that I am English living in Glasgow. I've been here for 7 years now and feel like a local (I love the place) so when people ask me where I am from, or in this case I tell them, I automatically say 'Glasgow'. It's a false of habit.

SHELLYMOON: Scotland is a beautiful country (separate from England - literally) and you must come over and see it - you won't regret it. I have attached 3 links for Scotland for anyone to take a look at and to 'whet your appetite' as it were. As for the language: there are different dialects in all places, some lighter/thicker than others and even though I have managed to pick some of them up there are others I cannot decipher for love nor money. My partner is Scottish (hence me being up here) and when he is with his family his accent changes automatically to one of a heavier nature. You should see my face when I am trying to make out what he and they are saying - apparently it's a picture.

I was at college until recently and there was a guy on the course who is half American/Scottish. I think his father was the American (armed forces) and Mother Scottish, was born in N. Carolina and moved to Scotland when he was 14 y/o. He now has an American accent with a twang of Scottish - now that is one to hear!

I hope you are all well. I'm presently washing my hoard of fabrics for readiness - I had no idea I had so many - it's going to take ages!

Until then, take care of yourselves - and keep sewing!!!

With love and blessings

Charlotte - your friend in Glasgow

I have similar problems when I go to Cornwall, Charlotte I revert to the West country of my youth instead of sounding like the female speaking clock. At least I don't need subtitles to understand Billy Conelly. Some years ago I understand Jasper Carrott was on tv in Canada with subtitles.

This is the one Country that I would love to visit one day as it is the home of my Great, Great Grandfather and Grandmother on my fathers side of the family. My Mom's family came from England so that is another one I want to go to before I am put in my little bottle.

Welcome to the group, I also am a scot, I moved to Canada 38years ago, I came from Edinburgh, I am a Canadian now, but Scotland will still be my home land. I still have my scottish accent and it seems to get stronger as you age, I never want to lose it. Sewing and all crafts are my hobbies, right now I am into quilting which I enjoy very much.
Nice to meet you.

Hello, Charlotte!
My father's mother was Scottish and her accent was hard to work out if you were not used to it. I never knew my dad's father who was also Scottish. Anyway, his parents divorced when he was young and he spent half the year with each of them and he has a Scottish accent though he was born in Idaho! He also uses the Queen's English liberally.
My mum is from Georgia and she has never lost her southern lilt. My own accent is a hybrid and can sound northern or Washingtonian (is that even a word?), I too speak English and American quite fluently. Yes, everyone, there is a difference though a wee bit more subtle than in Austin Powers.
I only wish my Grandmother had taught my Dad and/or me Gael. I'm still alive, I can learn it.
Welcome to the Forum!

...Joyce and Kate and thank you for your warm welcome.

Although I am English and live in Glasgow I have been mistaken many times of being Australian!!! This 'twang' that I have must be strong because I have been asked by two native Australians (in Glasgow) where abouts in Australia I come from and when I tell them I'm English they are very shocked and surprised and tell me that I don't sound English at all. I've never been to Australia and the nearest I have been is that one of my uncle's emigrated there in the 1950's when Brits' could go for £10.00 (about 20 USD).

My b/f works in Edinburgh as a web designer for a large bank (Royal Bank of Scotland) so is a good 500 mile round trip every week. Very tiring although he does sleep on the bus to and from work.

I would love to visit Canada, mainly the BC area (Lake Jasper and the surrounding area - I'm crazy about wolves) and it is on my 'to do' list (like doing the laundry and the general housekeeping. It just makes my list look more interesting!)

My favourite crafts are sewing (including cross stitch and tapestry) and would very much like to expand on this, especially when making clothes but I'm also interested in sewing anything - just to get practice &c.. I'm very fussy when it comes to clothes. I'm trying to get into bag making at the moment and have made a paperless pattern and there are women on here who will tell you how much of a nuisance I have been when enquiring about interfacing - I have such a problem with interfacing and fabrics - it's a nightmare for me. I did try card making but I have so many craft activities that one/some have to go and this was one of them. I'm not bothered because I didn't get that far into it (except buying materials) because sewing is my true craft love.

It's good to be here and to meet like-minded women from all over. This has got to be an internet bonus I think - bringing such people together from anywhere and everywhere.

Have a great day ladies and keep sewing!

With love and blessings.
