Hi Everyone

I have designed a bag I would like to make up in 100% cotton but am confused about what type of iron on and sew in interfacing to use.

I want the bag to be stiff-ish but not hard like card and it must have some 'body' to it as well so it doesn't look or feel flimsy.

If there is anyone out there who can help me I will be very grateful to you.

With thanks and blessings.

I would suggest getting either medium or heavy weight interfacing iron on, as long as it's just a normal cotton and not dimensional. You might try getting a little bit of both and trying both and see how you like the body and stiffness.

Another option is to get fusible fleece and use that. I just used that for the diaper bag I made, and it does a good job of giving it a good amount of body without being overwhelmingly stiff.

I like fusible batting or regular batting in most bags. It gives body without stiffness. If you want a flat bottom a strip of plastic canvas is good.
I just made a bag that needed to stand up on its own and used a real heavy interfacing similar to Timtex which worked very well but it sounds like you want something a little less stiff.

There are many options to use to stiffen a handbag.. those mentioned.. as well as using bucram .. I lik eto use this along with either an iron on interfacing or iron on fleece.. the bucram gives it extra stiffness while the other gives the material a smooth look.. Carolyn

I love the fusible fleece. Just be sure to use a hot iron and LOTS of steam!

Hi Carolyn

Thank you very much for your help with this matter. I have located some on UK eBay and the sellers states he used to sell it by the masses to people who made bags. I have asked for his advice also on this subject (still unsure of where to go on this) and shall await his reply.

Thanks again.

With blessings.
