WOuld you want to do one block swap? Or send one block to everyone that signs up?

Any suggestions, comments would be appreciated!

Okay, we'll this is what we'll do!
An all around swap where we send a block to each person participating and we'll start it in january.
We'll come up with a color/theme and a mail date before then. Any suggestions are welcome!

I've been on the shore dangling my toes in the water......I'm very interested, but I would love to know which kind of block swap everyone is interested in.

I've participated in the following kinds involving a set group of people (12- or 24) that exchange blocks for one year (say starting in 2007). This means that everyone on the list would make either one block a month (12) or two blocks (if twenty four participated).

#1 - Individual whose month to have a block would just inform the list the kind of block they would want. For example, I asked for tree blocks with muslin background and it could be any size. Some asked for Christmas themed blocks....this could even be a traditional pattern in Christmas fabrics.

#2 - Individual whose month to have a block made would send to everyone on the list the fabric and pattern for the block. For example, I sent indigo blues and the pattern for everyone for a lady of the lake quilt. Doing this method controls the kind of fabric in the block if you want a quilt to look a specific way. Another time, I sent out reproduction fabrics and the pattern for a basket quilt. (I will get around to taking pictures of some other quilts for examples.)

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album1/DSC03320.html
http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album1/birdsinair.html

#3 - Individual whose month to have a block made requests a specific pattern and you are allowed to use any fabric you want with maybe suggestions for the colors.

.....I'm sure there are other ways of doing the block exchanges, so I am anxious to hear what everyone is thinking.

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album2/tree_blocks.html

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album2/lady_of_the_lake.html

Added some pictures to my photosite that I thought would help explain some of the block exchanges. The trees were blocks sent to me where the maker picked the pattern and material. I requested a solid cream background.

With the lady of the lake quilt, I sent the fabric and pattern to those participating and they returned the block to me.

I apologize for the picture of the tree blocks because an ocean wave quilt I am working on "shadowed" through a bit on the blocks (but I didn't dare take it off the wall).

As you can see the possibilities are endless with the exchanges. My favorites are the signature blocks and believe it or not, the lights in the birds in the air quilt are signed by the makers.

Oh, I also have another quilt (top stage) with sashing blocks (flying geese) that were made as friendship blocks. I'll get a photo of this when I finish up the outside border that I have been procrasting on and getting involved in other projects.

Let's get some chatter going about what everyone thinks??????? Maybe if anyone has questions they should get them out

I've been in 4 block swaps on these boards. Each of them we all made enough blocks for each person participating. We first decided what type of block to make. The first swap we decided to all do 12" blue blocks, pattern of your choice. Alot of them did a block that's name started with their initial. I got some very pretty blocks.
Another swap was 12" baskets, pattern of your choice. I recieved another beautiful set of blocks.
Another swap was house blocks. My favorite swap so far. Everyone did a 12" house block of their choice. One lady dyed all the sky fabric that everyone used.
Every block swap I've been in we mailed our blocks to one person along with a postage-paid envelope and that person swapped out the blocks and sent one of each to everybody.

I'd like to join another swap after Christmas too.

Here is a post earlier this year where BRG, the hostess for the last 2 quilt block swaps that we did, asked for ideas for a future quilt block swap. But I don't think it ever got off the ground. There were some ideas pushed around....

The other advantage to doing it this way is the hostess has a cut off date that all the blocks have to be to them by. This way if someone drops out and doesn't let us know people aren't sending out blocks and not getting anything in return (you would get your block back that would have gone to that person) and we've kept the swap open an extra week for someone that has had something come up and needed a little more time.

I like choosing my own block but following a color scheme-it lets me choose something at my skill level without feeling like I'm doing a poor job on something that I feel is over my head. Plus if someone is really busy at that time or something comes up they have the option of choosing a simpler block that they can make up in a hurry and still participate.

I agree. It makes the beginners be able to swap as well as the experienced ones.

Here's a thought I had... a red and white block, pattern of your choice. All the same size block. (I prefer 12" finished blocks, but I'm okay with any size) Appliqued, pieced, paper-pieced, redwork, or whatever.
Just a suggestion...... I love red.

Solid or print in the red? When you say white do you mean something like a white kona or a muslin?

Hmmmm......this is certainly a fabric color that everyone should definitely wash before sewing to test to make sure the red doesn't bleed. :)

One could also get some very lovely positive negative effects in the patterns that are often lost when using a multitude of prints or big designs in a block.

I think red prints would make the blocks more interesting since there might be several different shades of red coming from different people.
Washing red fabric before using is a good idea. I always wash mine but forget that not everyone does.
White on white prints for the white might also make the blocks look better together since not all solid whites or muslins match.
Like I said, it's just a suggestion. Everyone keep coming with more.

Lyn, for some reason, my brain only sees this as the way a politican would do a block exchange: they would make big promises for a pretty block and in the end you would receive a four patch from them. They would say they only had two/four years to make the blocks and just couldn't do it in time - please elect me again. I don't think we have any political quilters, or do we? For our :Canada: neighbors, our elections are coming up in 12 days and some of the advertising has gotten quite ugly.

Judy, thanks for updating on the previous swap thread from the beginning of the year.

There have been 11 quilters posting about the swap...........

My toes are dangling and HeyJudee didn't really commit (darn her determination to finish her other projects).

I'm thinking this would be great fun...... anyone out there that is interested and just lurking?

Okay......where is everybody? Busy with Halloween costumes?

Me??? You want me to take a plunge and jump in the water?

Okay, I'm warning all of you I'm going skinny dipping and joining the block swap!

I'm getting the impression that everyone is very comfortable with picking the pattern they feel their skill level can accommodate.

When we can get a few more "bodies" (that's Halloween lingo ladies) to join in, there are three things that need to be determined:

1. colors to be used, and or types of fabrics
2. possible theme? or no theme, just blocks in the colors choosen by the group.
3. when the blocks will be due to the swap leader to redistribute.

I wouldn't mind helping or being the person that sits on everyone  to get their blocks going

My question............what can we do to get Judy to join?

Patty-does have that ring, huh? LOL Not what I meant and I must tell you I have NEVER been disappointed in a block exchange. Even the very simple blocks have been done up in beautiful fabrics. I understand what you mean about the 4 patch thing but this also encompasses all levels of quilters and some quilters just getting started aren't comfortable doing more than a simple 9 patch sometimes. (i hope not a 4 patch LOL)

well it looks like someone needs to set the rules, decide on theme, maybe colors, dates and how many and block size. it looks like except for 1 there is enough interested that would do 1 quilt top. you now have ideas who would like to join in.
