Even though I've been quilting for over 20 years, I just recently entered a quilt in my first-ever quilt show. I was thrilled to have won an award and even more tickled by the compliments of fellow quilters whose work I so admire.

Last Thursday I was at my son's Pack meeting for Boy Scouts. The Den leader said to me, "You're a sewer, right?" In my mind I'm thinking (tongue in cheek, of course), "Why yes, I am an award-winning quilter...thanks for asking." But nooooo....he's looking for a go-to person for sewing the stinkin' badges on!:nah:

Oh Katie.....toooo funny! Along the same line, my husband always wonders why I find such difficulty sewing on buttons.

I thought the kids were suppose to sew on their own badges?

Well, he's six...a six year old BOY...I'd about as much put a needle in his hand (forget about introducing him to my new machine) as I would hand a pair of scissors to him and tell him to go run!

Katie.....

When my son was in the first grade I had all the kids sew puppets on my sewing machine. The boys LOVED sewing and were fascinated with the machine. At the time I had a Bernina 930, so I must have loved those kids to lug that two ton Bertha into the classroom.

At the end of the schoolyear they put on a play with the puppets they made.

I think your son might just surprise you!

Patty,

You know, I'm supposed to organize a group project for one of the Cub Scout meetings....just how complicated were those puppets? Hmm, now you have me thinking...maybe they'd be interested in making bean bags? Not sure I'm brave enough to tackle that, but I do have two sewing machines I could lug in. Another woman has encouraged me to teach my kids to sew as well...I'm just not sure my well of patience is deep enough! I might be pleasantly surprised, but I'd hate to ruin their experience by not being flexible enough.

I like the idea of the bean bags! They could always use chalk on a side walk to draw a tic-tac-toe board.....and use them as x and o's.....

I remember drawing a simple pattern (please remember my son is now 27 so this was a few years ago :re: ) that the kids could slip their hands into with the thumb and pinkie as arms........ I brought in all kinds of scraps they could embellish with as well as buttons, yarn, lace.

The years go by quickly Katie.....I know.........but just dare to allow yourself to imagination how you planted the seed of creativity in these kidlets. My son, to this day, loves the quilts I have given them (sometimes to the point that I told him I am going to secretly take a few and burn them because they are beyond repair!)

I don't know where you live, but if it were close, I'd come and help you out.

Hi Patty,

This is beginning to feel like a private conversation between just the two of us!:bg:

Just thought I'd break in on the conversation here KAtie. We make puppet at school with the year 6 kids ( aged 11) They are given a template outline and then embellish to make it there own, There are some examples inthe DT showcase http://www.greneway.herts.sch.uk/dt/index.htm
scroll down till you find them..
It is lovely to have an open ended project with kids so that they can stamp their own personality on it.
love and kisses, Jan

Jan, those are all wondeful projects by the children. I am totallly impressed. Nothing like that is offered here until they are around age 14.

Katie, I'm in the Fingerlakes......at the northern end of Skaneateles Lake. Were you part of Buffalo storm last week? I saw on the news last night that many are still without power. We get quite a bit of snow, but our lake effect is from Lake Ontario.

Jan, those are really nice puppets!

So Katie........you need to post a picture of your award winning quilt

Jan,

Those puppets are cute! Such crafty kids. I particularly liked Eeyore (or however you spell it).

Patty,

Nope, I was lucky. I live closer to Rochester, so I escaped Buffalo's storm. I have a lot of empathy for those folks, I survived the ice storm of 1991. I think Buffalo got hit worse, however.

I'm not sure if I can figure out how to attach a picture. I'll give it a whirl...

I tried to upload a file witht he manage attachments button, but that took forever...probably because I'm on a dial up connection. Am I on the right track?

Katie.....If you post your pix on a free picture website you can just past the url of that picture to your letter...making it much easier and manageable with dial-up. I use PhotoSite because it was one of the first places I found when I googled free picture websites.
