I had a large pincushion for about 10 years. I kept wondering where my needles kept disappearing to. I kept finding a few just under the pincushion cover and would pull them out but usually I would just shake my head about the missing needles and get a new one out.
Last week I picked it up and stabbed myself, again, with a needle that was completely embedded in the pin cushion. I carefully felt the pin cushion and removed 2 or 3 more needles that were embedded. I figured enough was enough and I was tired of stabbing myself every time I picked this thing up and it was old so I was going to discard it. I figured I should first cut it open in case there were a couple more needles in there - a couple?? I found over 30 needles embedded in the middle of the pincushion. That's it for me, no more large pincushions.

I used to press down on the tomato to get the needles out. I now keep a bulletin board in my sewing room. I keep all my used hand an machine needles there.

I think when I finally figured out that my needles were in my red tomato pin cushion I found more than 30! And most were bent. I finally bought a magnetic needle holder. It would be a snap to make one. Essentially it is a small flat clear plastic box (very flat but doesn't have to be) with a sheet magnet on the bottom. I always seem to have some magnet around or frig freebees that come with advertising. One only needs to cut the magnetic stuff to fit and put it in the bottom of a container that would hold the needles.

I don't know why but I seem to bend all my hand sewing needles as I sew. They still sew and I have no trouble with them so they must conform to my hand and fingers. For most things I do like fine needles so that is probably it as well. I do have remind myself to throw needles our from time to time, as I do with pins.

My daughter made me a couple needle books with felt pages and linen (with cross stitch on it) covers. Works fine for me.

I keep a large magnetic tray for pins, keep the needles in their packages (when new) and old ones go in a clear tube (that a pen came in)...I have enough trouble picking pins and needles out of my bare feet..:whacky:

I have a large tomato pin cushion but all I use it for is the pins with heads on them ( glass heads or the flower heads ). They can't sink in. I have a smaller pin cushion that I use for needles & have never lost a one yet. It has a wooden bottom on it & the cushion isn't a high one at all. If I drop a pin I have one of those magnet wands that works great. I have ceramic tile everywhere so I can also see the pins easily. I put my needles & pins that aren't useable any longer in a medicine bottle & then to the trash. This all works for me but others might have better ideas.

Me too, Chrys! I still have one (somewhere) that broke off 22 yrs ago when I was preg...about an inch of pin that went in too far to get out and I didn't want anyone digging on me while I was preg...never seen again (yet).

Love the Bulletin board idea. I'm thinking about making the wall above my machines a giant bulletin board so I can hang pattern instructions up there as I sew. I could make a nice corner for the needles too. Thanks for the idea.

FYI...I think magnetic pin catchers are the best thing ever invented.

I had a wonderful huge bulletin board before we moved. My husband got it when he was a carpenter and working at a college. They were throwing it away so he brought it home and hung it in my sewing room. But it was overlooked when we moved and now I don't have it any more and I find myself taping bits of paper to the walls.

I love the bulletin board idea too! Thanks.

Pam, What you described happened to my grandmother when she was in her 30's. The piece of the needle (don't know how big) that had gone into her finger came out of her lower calf about 35 years later. It never caused a problem.

How strange is that? I guess glass in the body does that too but doesn't travel as much.

I have a bulletin board over my sewing space. I also have a magnetic strip - it was designed to hold small tools, and I purchased it in a woodworking store.

I keep a magnet on my non-computerized machines, and stick a razor blade there, convenient for ripping seams.
