OK - I am beginning to grasp what everyone here has said about easing fabric. Then I ran into something yesterday on a pattern that I just can't get. The pattern says to press the hem and ease the fabric in while pressing (underskirt of a little girls dress). My only response is - Huh? I tried to do that but just kept ending up with little pleats and wrinkles. HELP - please. Susan |

If you run a line of tiny stitches with your finger pushed tight up against the back of the presser foot -- let go every few inches to let the fabric out then press it tight again -- and steam and press the ease line in it usually helps with hemming a round skirt. If it turns out you pulled it up too tight, a tug here and there to loosen a stitch or two makes it fit. Or you can run a line of very large stitches and pull on the bobbin thread to make it fit. Again a bit of steam helps shrink up the eased fabric. Dorothy |

Dorothy - that is very similar to what I usually do, but this one says to press in the ease and then stitch. Do you think it would be ok to stitch in the ease and then press (Doing the opposite of what the pattern says)? SUsan |

It is OK to do what ever works best for you. You would, of course, stitch in the ease before you stitch the hem. Dorothy |

Susan, don't be discouraged. Another thing some of my sewing guild cronies and I were talking about is that some fabrics are just more easable than others--Some really are going their own way! Do your best, and don't un-do your stitches unless you're unhappy with the appearance of them.

I finally gave up on trying to make it work the way the pattern says. So I stitched in the ease by pressing on the back of my presser (and I learned that being a leftie you really have to watch out for the screw that holds the needle in place, I have the bruise to show). THEN I ironed it, and then hemmed it. To me it looks fine. I don't know if I will ever grasp how to press the ease into a garment, but stitching it in seems to work. Thanks for your help!!! |
