January 2007 Friendship Block Exchange

Hope everyone doesn't mind, but I'm going ahead with just planning the swap from our discussion on swapping blocks.

Here are the rules for exchanging the 12 1/2 inch unfinished blocks:

1. The theme is red and white and your favorite block pattern you would like to make for everyone.

2. Participants will be limited to 16.

3. Fabric should be good quality 100 percent cotton in a solid red or red print (at least 75% red in the print) and a solid white. Let's stay away from muslin and go with a solid white fabric such as a kona cotton.

4. Pretreat all fabric. This is going to be important for everyone since red is notorious for bleeding. The last thing we want to happen is everyone to end up with a red and pink quilt  You can test your fabric by washing a two inch square sewn to a two inch square of your white with a load of your husband's or signficant other's white socks. If the square of white, or their socks turn pink you've got a bleeder. Keep the fabric wet and add synthrapol to your laundry to release the read dye from the white socks  . Chances are once a bleeder, it will consistently cause problems, so therefore, I would suggest going to a different red fabric. Sometimes you can even check a fabric before washing by rubbing white fabric on the red and seeing if any residue comes off on the white. I do this in quilt shops and you would be surprised at some very expensive quilting fabric that is unstable.

5. Any technique for making your block is acceptable (embroidery, applique, strip piecing, etc). The test is this: would you like to receive this block in the mail??? Don't be afraid to challenge yourself, but do a block that will reflect your best work. Be sure to measure and send 12 1/2 unfinished blocks.

6. Since this is a swap for 2007, sign-ups will close when 16 participants have signed up or by January 1st (whichever comes first). Blocks will be due to me no later than February 7. Let me repeat that, February 7 is deadline for me to have your blocks. I will repackage all blocks and I want everyone to receive their blocks by February 14th. This is so everyone will be red and white on Valentines day, and no one will be blue.

7. PM me with your screen name, full name, address, phone number if you plan on participating. I will not give out your information to Entertainment Tonight or quilt paparazzi. You need to also tell me what pattern you are using.

8. If there are 16 participants you will need to mail me 15 blocks in a prepaid envelope (not sealed) and addressed to yourself. You can take this to your post office to get the correct postage and then place it in another envelope addressed to me. I will give you my address when you PM me. Tyvek envelopes work well as they are waterproof and lightweight.

As a bonus, I will make quilt labels for everyone, and......and..............give out funny awards.

So, there it is.............It's red, it's white and right now all it is missing is YOU.

Talk it up and don't forget to sign up!

Forgot to ask this..............I am keeping a list of the blocks participants will be making to make sure we don't have any duplicates.

Does everyone want to keep their pattern a secret from the other participants and make them guess what you're making or do you want to talk about your blocks?

I'm still going through pattern books at this point trying to find a strong design to reflect the positive/negative effect of light/dark fabric.

Patty, I pm'd you. Not sure what block I'm making yet, have to look and see what strikes my fancy. I'm ok with not knowing what anyone is making-always adds to the surprise.

In the past I don't think we've gotten duplicates-everyone seems to go their own direction and even if there was a duplicate you wouldn't know it because it was made differently usually. Whatever anyone wants is fine with me. Just my 2 cents worth.

You're right about fabric choices making duplicate patterns look entirely different.

I like the idea of not knowing what everyone is making. I like surprises. Would it be possible, for everyone to put a sticker on the back of the block so we know who made what.

Carolyn,

I will make a master sheet for everyone giving the block (small sketch with name) and their maker. This way it will avoid any stickies. I'll also be doing a label if anyone wants to put it on their quilt when finished.

We're up to six including myself so all we need is 10 more adventurous quilters.

Off for :coffee2: and to paint to give my dining room/living room another coat of paint.

Click the search icon and then for your search type in "red and white" as the keywords (I didn't type in any other specifications.)

An array of GORGEOUS red and white quilts come up. One of the first ones is a red and white sampler.

Stef, I am so sorry that I jumped the gun without you. I just got so excited about the swap and then when I didn't hear from you in a few days (along with the way everything else was going) I just decided to post a swap up.

My God, I don't want you to think I'm one of the bossy old crabby ladies from the quilt shop :bang:

We're up to eight! Did anyone check out the Quilt Study Center site? Browse around the site and sign up for their quilt of the month. The first of every month they send the historical information as well as a close up of a quilt from their collection. Their detail photographs make the fabric and quilting designs come to life.

We're up to nine swappers........

Just a few notes to pass along to everyone. I have been asked a few questions that I thought might help everyone.

#1. Can I design my own block design?

Yes, yes, absolutely. It is great to be creative and fun to put some of yourself into your blocks. I happen to have the old Barbara Brackman dictionary of patterns (this was when she first started and the volumes are on looseleaf paper...yikes) and after going through that my brain was on overload and I just picked a pattern. If you do design your own block, please be sure to tell me when you send it along with the name you have given the block :)

#2. Can I use different fabrics for different blocks?

I say yes. If your stash isn't abundant in the reds and you need to make some blocks in different red fabrics that is fine, but make sure each block is only one red fabric along with the white. And make sure all the red fabrics are just of a good quality. Now, if all of you are against just having one red fabric in your block.....speak now or forever hold your needle.

#3. What's the purpose of the swap, what do you end up with?

A sampler quilt that you can make any size by adding sashings or alternating blocks (say a single Irish Chain). Sampler quilts/Friendship Quilts are fun because you will get blocks that will remind you of your friends on the forum.

#4. Paper Piecing?

Sure, but pick all the paper off the back before sending them to me :) If you use a water disolvable foundation be sure to tell me so I can pass that message along to everyone :)

Now, personally, I am surprised people with their country's flag colors of red and white haven't joined in. Here's a hint :Canada: eh? Hmmmm... HeyJudee?

(Waving my needle  ) I think a variety of reds in a block can be lovely, depending on the block. I'm fine with using just one red print too if that's what everyone else wants.

I'm trying to decide on a pattern. Will let you know.

I think either way is fine, I don't remember who asked the question about using different reds, but maybe that person meant to use different reds for each different block? I know in one of the block swaps, I used up stash and each person got the same block, but in 2 different colors...Personally I think the blocks received whether they have one or more reds and white will be gorgeous, especially since RED is my Favorite color. I am currently trying to get a red and white full size quilt backed that I finished for my bed over a year ago. I have so much back pain, and bad knees, so kneeling on the floor won't work. I may take it to Church and use the tables in the fellowship hall on Sunday....Just my 2 cents...Thanks to Patty and Stef for the great idea!!

I dont' have a problem with a variety of reds in a block. I'm having more trouble working my mind around plain white-seems stark to me but might be surprised when the blocks are worked up

Actually I agree with Lyn, anytime I have ever made a block with two colors, the other being white, I have used a white on white, but we may be surprised...I will do what the majority agrees on.. no biggie.

Well...I'm the ' I like Asian prints' person...and my fav color is R E D (blue red, not orange...).
I think white on white, with red is nice...I also think more than ONE RED is good...so whatever ya'll come up with (using my fake southern voice...) is fine by me..

Last FQ swap I was in...everyone got a beautiful red from me...(with gold...of course..):bg:

OK...ok... Patty, your "guilt" trip has worked :dave: ...sign me up. I've been keeping up on this post and RED is my fav colour. I'm sending you a PM with my info.

I agree with the needle waves: 1) using multiple reds and 2) with White on White. I usually use white on white when I put white fabric in a quilt. But will go with the majority.

Now to decide on a :Canada: block! hee hee :re:

PS: Just what I need...another UFO to add to my list. :bg:

I am just ashamed of myself for the terrible guilt trip I have inflicted upon a member of this forum :nah: Yippppeeeee Judy's joining us!

Three spots left swappers.....

I have consulted with a higher authority regarding a ruling on the red fabric.............waiting for a PM from her. Where did you go Steph? Personally, I want everybody to enjoy making the blocks and since we're going to be getting a variety of reds anyway, use of more than one red is fine with me.

Since we are going to be getting such a variety of whites anyway (what is the saying about eskimos have hundreds of words for the color of snow............is that how it goes?) How about everybody can decide for themselves what is best for their block - solid white or white on white. Never thought about the white on whites when I first posted the swap rules. I did check out the quilt shop the other day and they didn't have a big selection of white on white. I'm not sure if it is because it might not be as popular with the quilters in this area.........regional preference?

Okay.....off for some :coffee2:

PS.....Judy, I will make this up to you.

Patty..you're a hoot!

I think we are all so different that we should reflect that on our blocks. If you prefer red and white...do it...and if you prefer 2 reds and a white...do it (and so on..). I can't imagine it being anything but pretty in the end regarless of what you use. Just follow the few rules as Patty posted earlier and we'll all be happy campers....Oh and PLEASE please please please remember to prewash your fabric....we'd hate to have a bleeder.

The higher authority has spoken..........

You are to use the kind of white and red fabrics that enhances your block. Be it:

solid white or white on white

and one red or red print or several red prints within each block.

The most important key to this swap is:

you MUST enjoy yourself, have fun, be creative and we don't want any bleeders. :bg:

Don't you just feel the love here? :bolt:

Since we aren't telling our block patterns and I don't have anyone to share my block pattern with......and I just can't keep that kind of secret, I will give you some clues as to the pattern I have choosen.

The pattern was taken from a rare American quilt made in New York City in 1875 (although the pattern could have originated earlier) and the date March 8, 1978 Charleston, West Virginia is important.

Thought you would enjoy seeing a great signature quilt (they are my passion). One day I will have to go to the community of Cambridge, Ohio and do a little research.

The picture before and after are detail photos of the signatures. Only one person inked all the names and about 3/4 through the project the maker ran out of the same turkey red and added more fabric that wasn't quite the same dye lot (hardly noticeable).

Oh hi there girls!
I have been looking to see if there was anymore posted on the quilt block swap and kept only getting the same things. UNTIL TODAY!!! I noticed that there are more PAGES on the thread!!! OH MY GOSH - DUH! Geesh Talk about no brainers!

I originally asked Patty about the multipile reds and was disappointed to find it was only one red. I am excited now to find I can use more than one even though I have bought my fabrics and had a plan already laid out! HOWEVER, we all know that it is a woman's perogative to change her mind! HA!!!!

This is my VERY first quilt block swap, actually any swap at all! And thanks to Patty (my new quilt "mom") I am on my way to a great success! Thanks for your patience MOM! :)

Adoption has always been something we have wanted to do all our married life together (all 13 years lol) but now that just seems the choice that the big Guy upstairs has given us! SO, as you might have guessed, I am sewing up a storm for our little babycakes and of course for the nursery too! AND my mother and mil have been busy knitting and crocheting and sewing all kinds of stuff. It will be grandchild #3 on both sides but long awaited for too! My hubby keeps saying " more for the baby?" when I come home with baby fabrics. LOL I had to get a new hobby besides baby stuff so I started quilting! Now I just get to make more baby QUILTS!!! WHHAHAHAHA!!!!

Glad that everyone seems as excited about the RED/WHITE swap as me! :) I am hurrying to get my Christmas presents all finished (almost there!!) so that I can get started on the blocks! :)

She told me how her heart sank when her puppy wouldn't listen to her, jumped the backyard fence and ran ....................to her front door. Bwhahahahahaha Are there such thinks a doggie grandmas?

Everyone else out there in swapper land..........be prepared. That's all I'm saying. Right Steph?!?

Hey Patty, funny you should mention me....After I was lucky to survive Breast cancer at 48, menopause followed after the chemo. SOOOOOOOOO needless to say I sleep in a summer nightgown, all year long and need the ceiling fan on as well. I DON'T get night sweats, just need to be cool...although back in the days, I DO remember sleeping in flannel nightgowns, and also wore socks...:bolt: NO more flannel for me...

Hey Lyn, what's another 4 or 5 pair of jammies when I have that many to make? LOL OH I did something really dumb, I went to Joann last night and got Simplicity patterns for a buck, anyways I got a Christmas dress pattern for DGD, then a pattern to make DGS and SIL matching ties, and my DSIL decided that the matching vests would be super...LOL Then my DD said:sick: what about me? Well I bought my reds and white on Friday night!

Thought I would pass on something that the owner of the store told me when I mentioned something about washing and checking whether the reds run. She said to wash the reds then to press them dry with steam in your iron. She said that today's dyes are heat set so this is how I should treat my reds. So I'm gonna try it hopefully today. Then I think I will test by putting each in water with a piece of white to see if the red transfers.

What do you all think of her suggestion? Anyone heard or tried this before? Opinions/ideas???? :nc:

Judy, What a good suggestion! I'll try this and let you know what happens!

Hogmami.............got your PM and the quilt block you are making.

SWAPPERS................we are going to have BEAUTIFUL quilts! Only 3 spots left :re: for all of you lurkers who are contemplating swapping.

I did make a test block to make sure my pattern is the correct size and I put it up on my wall for a few days to decide how much I liked it or if I should go to another pattern. Well, I love the pattern so much I'm seriously considering making one of these in my reproduction scrap fabrics. I went to fabric.com and bought a bolt (10 yds) of their moda off white muslin to utilize those scraps. They were having a sale at the site

I was also thinking of making my sashing blocks ahead of time so that when February 14th comes along I can just sew my top together. I found my old quilt as you go frame and was thinking lap quilting might make a nice portable project.

I have been busy painting the inside of the house and making it "pretty" for when my kids come home for Thanksgiving............and I paint for awhile and then go reward myself by running to my sewing room and sewing a few seams. I guess as my SIL says, it doesn't take much to make me happy

Boy Debby! You are going to be so busy!! LOL. I went to Joann's with my dil and she's looking at the flannel and say's "how hard is it to make receiving blankets?" Turns out the ones my 2 yr old dgs uses are about trashed out so I ended up with 8 yeards of flannel for him! LOL I agree, what's a grandma to do??

Ok, so here's my dilemma.......I ordered some beautiful red fossil fern for this block....received it yesterday and it is red but certainly leans toward a pink red rather than a true red......are we sticking with red red or are we doing variations? I can order more fabric and will use this for something else if need be.....just wanting to clarify what we are talking about with "red". Thanks all.

Lyn........

Answer these questions:

Do you love the fabric?

Are you trying to drive yourself nuts trying to find the "perfect" red? With so many participants, we are all going to have a different definition of "red" and also what is available to us either by location or what we have in our stash, or even as you, what you ordered.

Even if you look at the spools of thread in the forum logo.....the reds run from warm to cool and looks pretty together.

Trust your judgment.

Not only will be have a sampler of blocks, we will have a sampler of "reds."

I think that the variations in all the quilt blocks is what is going to make it the "sampler" that it is and it is going to tell a different story about each and every one of us that is making the blocks. So I am with you guys-trust your judgement! :) Even red in the rainbow has variations from dark to light and moves it's way to pink. :)

Relax, Lyn, everyone will love your fossil fern fabric. I agree with everyone else as well, that is what will make it more like a sampler, with variations not only in the blocks but the reds. As much as I have to do for Christmas, I am really looking forward to relaxing afterwards and getting these blocks going...

I went to Hancock's today to look for red fabric. I couldn't find anything I liked. A quilt store I love to go to is having a huge sale Dec. 29th. I'm going to wait until then.
I have my block choice narrowed down to 3 now. Can I wait and try each one first before I decide which one to go with?

Hi there swappers..............

Santa left a message......something about red and white being favorite colors of his and he wants a quilt - was thinking of getting the Misses involved. I couldn't get all the phone message as there was lots of noise on the line with voices rambling about how good this years eggnog turned out. I think....now I could be wrong about this.....but I "thought" I heard some burping contests in the background?

No wonder Santa drops in at our house on his head. :re:

Anyway, only two spots left for our block exchange. Sign-ups close at the end of the month.

Lynn,
Yes, you just sew strips onto a foundation. I like using different widths of strips and I don't worry about them being sewn straight. When the foundation is covered, square up the blocks.

My red fabric finally came today! Three days in a row with no mail has been a pain.
I'm so excited and ready to get started on this. I made a practice block from fabric I already had. This quilt is going to be gorgeous!

Hello Swappers!

Hope everyone is doing well and on schedule with your blocks. Remember, if you are having any problems, let me know....

Below is a link for a red/white school house quilt and I wanted all of you to see how the blocks were set. I have always called it a garden maze and it is an easy way to set blocks (especially with strip piecing).

I am a new quilter when it comes to actual blocks. I have thrown together some scrap type quilts and squares with sashing.
I need some help with this 12 1/2 inch unfinished block. I am finding patterns online for 12 inch blocks. I found another site that said a 12 inch is a 12 1/2 unfinshed. Is this correct? So any pattern I find for a 12 inch block would work?

Yup, the 12 1/2 inch sq unfinished is the same as a finished 12 inch sq. I was "cornfused" with that too since I am new but I asked around at the quilt shop here and yup yup that is what I found out! :) See, you have a 1/4 inch seam on each side so that makes sense! How ya doin on your squares? I have only one made out of scrap fabric but I have to get my butt going or my "quilt mom" Patty will be mad!!!! :) (Hi mom-watch your mail!) Happy sewing everyone!

Patty, I mailed 13 blocks to you today, with a addressed, stamped return envelope.

Too busy of a block I guess....
Ive gotten new fabric, replacing one, and now I'm satisfied.

My fabric is all washed up and Im going to iron it tonight. I'm hosting a baby shower this weekend so I'll start sewing next weeek.

6. Since this is a swap for 2007,...... Blocks will be due to me no later than February 7. Let me repeat that, February 7 is deadline for me to have your blocks. I will repackage all blocks and I want everyone to receive their blocks by February 14th. This is so everyone will be red and white on Valentines day, and no one will be blue.

Good morning.....

I reposted #6 of the swap guidelines. I really need to have your blocks in my hands by February 7th in order to remail to everyone so they receive it by the 14th.

Now, if you haven't started your blocks......you could start today and make one block every day and you would still meet the deadline :bg:

Your packages will arrive with instructions. Please open the envelope that accompanies your package and proceed from there.

I was going to tell everyone that I could put on a pair of spike heels on and do some major butt kicking.......but it reminded me of a story..........

Back in December of '95 I had to go to NYCity to meet with a fabric company; I had worked on a challenge quilt for their fabric line and I had also done market samples for them. Anyway, I brought along my eight year old and although I had never met the woman I had contact with over the months, I knew quite a bit about her sewing talents from a mutual friend that lived in the city.

Turns out my daughter sat there "fascinated" with her tattoos....... the woman (who was lovely and gregarious) then offered to show my daughter her other "embellishments" besides the sun on her bossom, but the grapes and vines running up her thigh. :nervous:

What my mutual friend didn't reveal was the woman I was meeting was a dominatrix, meaning she had a whip and knew how to use it.

Bwhahahahaha...........so swappers, can't be a poser here and claim that I have a pair of spikes.....I will just get on my old pair of Clarks, pull the straw out of my teeth and tell you to get busy.

Just wanted to post a progress report. First of all, NOT wanting to give away or boast in any way my blocks, :re: but I WILL tell you that each block has 16 squares that make them up. I got enough cut out, and sewn last night to put together at least 9 blocks. I will do those tonight, and maybe cut the rest, so I guess once I got started, I knew it wouldnt take too long. I can't wait to see the finished blocks, as RED is my absolute favorite color....

Like Debby, my blocks each have 16 squares. I have enough rows of 4 made to make 8 blocks as well as another set of 2 rows for the another 8 blocks. Hoping to finish up over the weekend maybe.

I don't know how much I will get done Saturday, we have DGS for about 8 hours, while DGD is in finals for Biblequiz...IF I have any energy left, I will sew Saturday night, otherwise I am off work on Monday...I will most likely spend Saturday morning and afternoon, organizing sewing room while DGS watches cartoons...

Checking in on SWN from my sister's. So I'm definitely going to be under pressure to get these done and mailed in time...cause my blocks will be sent via dog sled :bg:

But just to peak your curiosity...I have to cut 21 pieces for each block...and I am using 4 different reds.

Well I have some exciting news......I am going to be working at the local quilt shop filling in for them when everyone is on vacation, etc.

I did this years ago, making store samples, etc., and I am finding that I am most productive when I have work to keep me busy. I work part-time for my husband, but I just need more.

I don't even think I can consider "working" at a quilt shop WORK?

Right now I am machine quilting one of the quilt pink quilts the shop is donating to Better Homes and Garden. It is a lap size and I am on my fifth spool of thread; guess I like to use a little thread :)

Well, just thought I would tell you what is new at this end....... as I stand at the mailbox wondering what exciting packages will be arriving.

I have my first test block finished. All is well except it came out as 11 1/2 inches:whacky: . Turns out that what I thought was 1/4 on my machine really isn't. Oh well lesson learned. It is still pretty and will make a nice pillow, so no worries from me.

Gina,
You might want to try taking a quilting ruler and measuring exactly where the 1/4" mark is from the needle. Put the ruler under the presser foot and lower needle down to touch right on the line. Then stick a stack of post it notes where 1/4" measures to guide the fabric through. This helps if you don't have a 1/4" presser foot.

I'll keep everyone posted on all the new kinds of quilting things that are at the shop :) I'm just hoping that I get to work LOTS of days!

SewHappie....you may be new to quilting, but skills from your other sewing carries over into quilting. In a way, I think it makes for a more adventurous quilter because you already know how other kinds of fabrics will handle different kinds of applications......such as the designer near you
http://www.suespargo.com/
who works in different kinds of upholstery fabric with yarns and threads to create beautiful folk art pieces.

I think of my quilting as a lifeline for inner peace; nothing calms me like the sound of my sewing machine.

Well, that is probably more than you ever wanted to know .......

I finished my first block which, or course, is sort of a practice. Now that I have the plan the others will be easy. All the pieces are cut out. Mine has 24 triangles and 4 flying geese units. Will do some assembly line work now that I know how it all goes together.
I intended to sew most of Saturday, but was in a car wreck on the way to work on Friday. :bang: NOT my fault. A car coming toward me lost control on the ice and did a 360 and the back of her car hit the driver's corner and down the doors. I went down the embankment and a fence post stopped me. Probably totalled my car since it is an older model but irreplacable as it was in such good condition. Made it to school an hour and a half late but was able to finish the rest of the day. Somewhat of a headache on Friday and Saturday, but doing fine today. Will probably call my cousin for a massage tomorrow.
Anyway am on a roll with the blocks. Hope everyone is doing well.

My pattern is pretty simple as I'm pretty much a beginner at quilting.....so dont laugh to hard when my block comes...all of you guys are probably very advanced in this.. I do enjoy it so I'm sure I'll have a lot of fun in the process. I'll be cutting my fabric tomorrow and do my test block....Ewh I'm getting nervous...

Jeke........How scary. Thanks goodness you were not hurt seriously in the accident, but keep an eye on how you are feeling with the headaches. Then again, losing your vehicle is a headache unto itself. Take care.

MontanaQuilter1 ...... Making a friendship quilt is what all of this block exchange is about. If friends are like blocks.....then no block is perfect. :) What counts is having fun making the blocks, experimenting and learning.

Keelie, don't worry about being a beginner, we will love your blocks, the important thing is enjoying yourself!

Thank you all for being so nice to me..My pattern is not very complicated involving half and half squares sewn together, but I have always wanted to do a pattern like that so this was a good opportunity for me to learn to do it...Surely it was not as hard as I thought it would be since they included in the block pattern a little trick about drawing a diagonal line down the block and sew 1/4 inch on both sides of the line and then cut the solid line and wa-la..two 1/2 and 1/2 blocks....I know it sounds dumb...but I was like Woo Hoo...it worked..It worked!!
Yep, I'm easily entertained...ha ha..
Anyway. I'm off and running now...I hope I'll have mine done by the first of the week to send off...
Great job to those who have already finished...

Darn...you've learned our little secret to making those dang things! :bg:

Since you know that one, I'll give you another little tip that I use. Sometimes I cut the squares a little larger (1/8" or 1/4") than they say. For example, if they say to cut a 3 7/8" square, I usually cut 4". Then if I'm not accurate when I am sewing the diagonal lines, after they are ironed out I can still square up the half-square triangle to the needed size, e.g. 3".

Well so far as I know, my iron is still working. SO since I have to iron mine, feel free to send any block or square ironing over, not a problem. Hey Keeli, aren't the 1/2 square triangles a blast? They are my favorite, I am still trying to convince Lyn that they are HERS as well.  To me it doesn't matter what the blocks look like, just the fact that our SWN friends took the time to make them is very special to me:smile: I should mail on Saturday, I will let you know for sure Patty.

Haven't been in my sewing room since the last time I posted. The room turned into the animal kennel during the freezing weather. Warmed up today so my darling guard cat moved back outside. I have to work tonight but tommorow I will reclaim my room. I should be done by Monday if all goes my way.

Hey Keeli (my Montana sister!!) every new little trick is always fun. Certainly don't feel dumb! I think it is great you want to do this. I have found half the fun is coming to the site and reading the posts, too. I can hardly wait until the weekend to get back at mine.

My thanks especially to Patty for doing this. I have never done a swap before because I felt I couldn't do my blocks well enough. She made it feel so easy and welcoming.

And Judy - love the trick to cut them a touch larger. Thanks for that.

My iron is headed for the trash! After being so cocky about it working I ironed all my blocks tonight and burned the palm of my hand where I was holding the iron-on the handle people-iron is dripping water and the plastic is heating up so.....new iron this weekend.

Debby, my block has 1/2 square triangles but I have to admit, I cheated and used thangles to do them. Had trouble getting them to the correct size though so I'm going to try your way next time. I think the blocks came out well, I'm pleased with them anyway and if anyone doesn't like them they can blame Debby for talking me into doing them!:bg: :bg:

I'm with you, Debby, I don't care what anyone else's look like, I enjoy receiving the labor of love that goes into them and they will all look great in a quilt!

I should be getting mine in the mail this weekend.

Hey Judy, I am with you on getting the block swaps into quilts. I DID finally this past summer, get the Christmas ones sashed and ready to batt and back. I am in the process of cleaning out the spare room and sorting the stuff into my sewing room, SO I will have a twin bed to display all my glorious quilts. I DID just decide that I will use THIS red and white one as a curtain in my sewing room. I have a pretty big built in cupboard that my DS :bolt: took the doors off of when he was still home. SEW I will sew and sash it to fit the opening and it will had some much needed color to my domain...:bg:

Hey Lyn, hope you didnt get too burnt on that dumb iron. To be honest I have always wanted to try the thangles, but just never had the chance to. For family I don't worry so much about the points as perfectly as I should, so I did stress a bit on these. I apologize if anyone gets one slightly off kilter...

I've cut and pressed enough triangles to sew up three blocks..and for the week I've had, thats big..ha ha. We'll be out of town tomorrow and Saturday and I plan on cutting out the rest Sunday afternoon, after church.

I'm excited about seeing everyones blocks!

Broken Toe? It is often injuries that don't sound big, or there isn't the gushing blood, that often hurt the worst! Hope the trobbing eases and you are able to walk without much discomfort. Glad you are back in the action overcoming obstacles with leaps and bounds

YESTERDAY........I got a package in the mailbox from OHIO! SewHappie's (Naomi's) blocks arrived and I want everyone to know that she "claims" this is only her second attempt at quilting... :re: Her quilting deserves a big red star.

What is going on with everyone's iron and getting burned? My teapot was never a good design and after I got my hand scalded from the steam, while pouring water, I threw that sucker out in the trash before it had time to cool. My iron is unfortunately going to be headed in the same direction as it is "leaking" steam after being dropped on it's head one to many times.

Judy, what a great question! makes you wonder, huh?

Debby, my hand is fine but I definitely need a new iron! I think a couple of my blocks are slightly off kilter too but I have done the best I can with them and am not sending the really bad ones! LOL

I did discover, Debby, at least with my machine, I couldn't follow the printed lines precisely-made the squares too small, had to do very scant 1/4 inch seams on the thangles. So I tried a size up (to make one 1/2" larger than the one I was supposed to be using) and it was huge! I gave up and did the correct size with scant seams. Maybe it's just me!

Anyone else try the thangles ever? What do you think? This was my first try with them.

Hey Lyn, I am pretty sure it's 13 to mail, I just got Patty's address and am mailing tomorrow. Lyn, do you have a special 1/4 inch foot for your machine? They are the greatest thing since the seam ripper LOL. I am sure your blocks and everyone elses will be wonderful. Just the thought that everyone took the time to cut and sew them together is really cool. Let me know Patty when you get mine, I am in PA, so it shouldn't take too long!!

Yes, it is 13 blocks to send in the mail along with a SASE for their return home.

Now about me possibly giving clues? Me? Hmmmm? Did I say that Carolyn's are beauties? Hmmmmm? Not sure what everyone is possibly thinking.

esrun3 - I have a really old patchwork ruler for odd angles and I have never been able to figure out what the numerical number correlates with for an angle, I am not math impaired either. When I'm working on cutting out blocks, I'll just line my template up to the line I should be following and then mark it for the pattern.

The 1/4" foot - while I love mine, with my machine I have found out that if I sew with my fabric flush to the edge I sew a seam larger than 1/4". To remedy this I must sew just a smidge to the left of the right foot edge.

Debby....... I'll let you know when your blocks arrive.

Better go...... :coffee: :)

Lyn, do you have a special 1/4 inch foot for your machine? They are the greatest thing since the seam ripper LOL.

Hi Debby, yes I have a 1/4 foot but I tried that one and they still didn't come out well, so I went back to my regular foot and just moved the needle over to do a scant 1/4". I was just surprised with thangles that I had to do smaller than the line they had marked for sewing on.

Mine will go out tomorrow on my way to my dd's for her bday celebration.

Patty, i'm not math imparied either but these sure threw me for a loop-maybe it was just the stress I put myself under wanting them to be easy but perfect. LOL now is that oxymoron or what?

Carolyn.....pictures? Ummmm.... let's see my description is certainly just like a picture?

Hmmm....what can I say.......quilting blocks are similar to gardening....some people like roses and others like daisies, yet they're all of the same genre - garden plants. And all when all the different plants are in the garden, the garden looks beautiful. Same way with a quilt....lots of different fabrics and patterns and they all beautiful together. Does that help you? :)

Don't worry...I'm still sewing mine!!! Yesterday I discovered that I am a couple of inches short from having enough fabric to cut some blocks! So I either have to substitute or go back to that store to see if there is still some left. And...I have just calculated how long it is going to take me to finish my blocks and I'm aiming to have them finished this weekend and hoping to be able to mail them next Monday.

Judy......substitute the fabric. Stress is not welcome here. No one will be able to tell that a few fabrics are different as the block pattern is dominant. (I can tell that you are a perfectionist from the photos of your beautiful work.) In my block I don't think anyone would really notice if I had substituted the fabrics....nature of the beast as it was originally made in our area all out of scraps. :bluewink:

Lynn, I'll be looking for your blocks eagerly by the mailbox!

I've had a few ideas floating around about how to sash them. One was to do an attic window......and lets say a block would run a little small......no big deal because you could cut the attic window pieces larger and then cut down the entire unit to fit after the sashing was added.

I was thinking of sashing one block in a plain white (log cabin effect)....then the adjacent block with 3" blocks of scrap red (like a checkerboard).... then the blocks would alternate between plain and checkers......

Okay, I'll tell you what I'll do...........Once everyone who has participated in the swap has received their package of blocks back.....then I will post a picture of the blocks for everyone to see.....probably in a general topic everyone reads. It is only fair that all the participants get to see their blocks before the rest of SWN.

As I have said before, please hold off opening your package of blocks until you have read the enclosed note in the package.

Block deadline is approaching :)

Judy,
I also say use fabric you already have. I used several different reds in mine just to keep it interesting for me to work on. Only a few of you will get blocks with exactly the same reds.
I hope everyone likes my block. Some of the reds I ordered looked different than they did online. Most were darker than I expected. I still liked them tho and hope everyone else does too.

Hey Lyn, that is a good question about the sashing, I kind of like Patty's idea about both red and white possible checkerboard...big sigh,,,, maybe everyone can brainstorm and we can decide. Judy, please use the fabric you have, and Bama, I am sure we will love your blocks, you ALL can't imagine how anxious I am to get them. I FINALLY Got my quilt finished that I used reds and whites for my bed, it was started over 2 years ago, the pattern is broken dishes and I sashed it in a red tone on tone print that I didn't use in the blocks. I will try and get DH to take a picture, it looks so pretty with my red carpeting.:bluesmile

Judy-definitely use what you have on hand. I used the same red in all of mine but used up FQ's I had for the white so each block is slightly different and I'm thinking I could have mixed the whites and it wouldn't have mattered.

Bama, we will love whatever we get-most of us are in this because we love to share-and anything we make out of the blocks will be all the better because of the time and love people put into their blocks!

Debby, I like the red and white idea too but was also kicking around sashing with blue maybe-would depend on the shade of blue as well as the shades of red, Green would work too..hmmmmmmmmmmm

anyone have any other ideas?

Bama I had the same thing happen only mine was a different shade than I had planned but it's in the red family and I love how the block turned out so....we will all love whatever we get! Have fun, don't stress (LOL yes, that's coming from me-the stress part. LOL)

Debby, I reread your post, I like the thought of doing the red on red too for sashing.

I will have mine in the mail by the beginning of next week. I took one of my blocks to a new quilt guild that we have started amongst some friends and family. When I told them about it and that I would get 13 different red and white blocks back from all over the country, they were also excited. I told them I would bring them next month when we meet. I am thinking of using black sashing. Growing up my room had red carpet and my mom and I accented it with black and white. I loved that room.
Like I said earlier part of the fun of this swap is reading the posts on the forum.
Take care all.

Jay, decorated our bedroom when I got married in red/white/black. Hmmmm It was very sexy. LOL... hahahahahahahaha

Okay... Sweet Jane, no, no, you don't need to shovel the snow, that is what boys are for  Only seven times so far? I'm sure your DH will ask a few more times before your blocks go out in the mail.

Oh, forgot to mention a box arrived in the mail from Lyn in Arizona. At first I thought it was something I ordered from Pottery Barn... Hmmmmmmm......HRT's you've gotta love them :)

Thanks everyone for the encouragement to use up what I have in my stash. I may have found another piece that I had that is the same....we'll see. It's getting exciting when I hear Patty announcing the receipt of all those packages. I believe I can hear her shouting all the way up here..."Hey...I've got mail!!!"

Well I'm still on track to finish this weekend so should be mailing by Monday. I'm hoping that the dog sleds will be able to get to NY by Feb. 7th. :bg:

The only reason why I know how fast Feb 7th is approaching is because my son's birthday is the 8th. He may be turning 31, but stuck in 9 year old time frame. (Very innocent and has that excitement about his special day.) Every day DH and I get the count down of how many days we have left to shop for his present

After the Lyn's beautiful blocks arrived yesterday and I finished ooogling them (she is VERY detail oriented as she made a quilting label for the box and return address!) I cleaned up my kitchen (accidently broke a dish) and got dinner made. Wish pottery barn package would arrive...........

Off to work ladies.............more this evening.....

Blocks arrived from Ala BAMA! Oh Bama..... I have never seen this pattern and I love it! All those little stitches........all the LOVE put into those blocks <3 <3 <3 <3 :) Bwhahaha......could we possibly have used the same fabric? Bwhahahahahaha I love it. If it is not the same, it is sure darn close to it.

I think I told Judy in a PM, but I want all of you to know what I'm doing with the blocks while I'm waiting for repackaging......... I am carefully checking the package quickly and then tucking them carefully in a basket until I have them all. I don't want any to get lost or separated. So, no, I don't really know what they look like together and will be a bit surprised until I sort them all.

More later.....:bolt:

I will tell you that I already know it is going to be one of my favorite quilts.

Patty, glad the box got there, I ran out of envelopes at home! LOL Sorry it wasn't Pottery Barn though for you!

I can't wait for the blocks to arrive!

Debby, I'm concerned about red w/hearts mostly because I'm assuming we've all used different shades of red and it might look "off" with other reds. Black sounds interesting with it. Gonna have to think about it some more.

I know Lyn, I am still pondering about the sashing too. I am not fond of the idea of black or blue....will just have to wait and see... Patty I know it will be my favorite, as is the color RED. Judy, Patty is a big teaser, using hearts and lots of description to make us more anxious...I sure can't wait either LOL:up:

Re the sashings...a light beigey brown, possibly gold may look nice too. Once we get all the blocks together it will be easier to pick something. Greens may go well too but that will depend on the shades of reds.

Just so you all know I do my best work under pressure!! I have two blocks completely finished but all the pieces are sewn for the rest, so it won't take me long to zip them together. However, I feel no shame if I am last :) At least, I am telling myself that.

Patty, I am going to Bozeman tonight and plan on getting to the reproduction fabric shop tomorrow. Will let you know all about it. Maybe take a pic or two if they will let me. I am so excited to see my grandkids, but going to this shop is taking a close second.

OH Jay! Lucky, lucy you!

When I was at work last week we had a visit from a former friend who had moved out to Wyoming. He kept telling us stories about his new community and my DH kept looking at me knowing how badly I want to go out west. However, he wants us to come visit his family if we do go out there and I wouldn't miss it. I guess the local diner has Testical Tuesdays ....bwhahahaha... (my DD enlightened us about this when discovering this is what football tailgaters were serving at the University of Nebraska football games). Bwhahahahahaha

Anyway.....I was really close to just wearing the clothes I had on my back and hitching a ride out your way :)

Well, enjoy your visit to Reproduction Fabrics....if you ever meet Margo please let her know how much I LOVE her new fabric lines!

I will be waiting for your return and PICTURES!

Oh Patty, an Amish block swap sounds great! DH and I are planning a trip to Ohio in February, weather permitting. Sure can't get more Amish than fabric from Grandma Fanny's Quilt Barn, in Ohio. Berlin is amazing, we go at least 3 times a year, along with Sugarcreek, Charm, Millersburg,,,,, love the quilt shops, Amish restaurants and CHEESE> ...

It would be neat....all the blocks have black background and because all blacks are different you would have the "sparkle" effect. :) Amish blocks are great too because they're all angular and then the circular quilting contrasts with the piecing. I have some great books and I could list the pieced blocks that would be reminiscent of a quilt in the style of an amish maker.

But, not to jump the gun.....back to the task at hand.......red and white blocks

but we can dream about Amish quilts :)

Ok...I am DONE! AND all I have to say is S****! (sorry for that....but it had to be done) I have had THE worst luck with my blox ladies!!! Like I have said before....PLEASE be gentle on me! EVERYONE is going to know that my blox were my firsties....My mom says I am too hard on myself but when you all see them you will laugh and say..."No, mom she ISN'T!!!". If you knew what I have gone thru to get these done. UGH!!! Ok...Not going in the mail tomorrow because it is 8 PM here and I don't have envelopes ready or anything and Poor Poor Pitiful Jane had not sleep last night AT ALL. Ok ok...I dozed twice. But that was IT! (not because of the blox but cuz of chronic pain) Those puppies are going out Tuesday FOR SURE QMom! :) Tell the brother HB from his "older sister" :) you know, the one he NEVER knew about!! HE HE....Im off to shower and bed!

cowqueenie......in no way was the swap suppose to cause you anxiety or grief..................... :)

With that said, I'm glad you were able to finish your blocks - you should be proud of yourself as many would just give up with the frustration. Now that you've done the blocks you can always ask questions as to how to make the assembly easier or if there are any tricks in the process.

Everyone begins somewhere...... this quilt should always bring a smile to your face when you put it together :bg:

No grief really just perfectionism at work here. I found that after putting all the pieces together I was using the wrong foot and was not creating 1/4 seams!!! So....I spent the WHOLE day on Saturday tearing everything apart and sewing back together! All in all it was fun for me because I have never done a quilt block before and learned a little about material as well. Was just talking out of relief last night that I was done. :) And yes, I will smile every time I see the quilt and laugh because I know...I JUST KNOW!!! :) They will be going in the the mail tomorrow-Priority straight to NY!!!

Now, with that said...I'm not sure on the next swap either but if it is at the right time I might do it just to learn some more. I have a few projects I want to get done first (like my real mom's bday gift!!) It is already late. Just don't want it to be a 4th of July gift!!! Thanks for the cheering up! I have found everyone here to be VERY supportive and fun! Glad I found ya all!

I think that it would be nice if we could each make our next blocks fitting to the Amish Community(s) in your area. IE: mine would be Ohio, someone from PA would do PA, someone from Indiana do In. The next thing would be to see just how many different community
(s) you have in your area and see just how different, if any, theirs are from others in the same area.
For those of you who do not have Amish and/or Mennonites in your state, pick one from the closest state to you that does!!
I know that I would be willing to help out finding patterns and resources for the blocks, since I live in a Amish/Mennonite area of Ohio.
Plus I think that this would be a great education for all of us!!!

Okay, I am on a great run to finish my blocks tonight and my machine starts binding up. I was planning on taking it in after finishing the blocks for a tune up. It certainly wasn't listening to my plan!! Thank goodness I have a good friend whom I know will let me use one of her machines. I have another one that was given to my husband but I have never tried it out. Don't want to start now.

Mail came! Oh wait..... No blocks......

No, I didn't have to kiss the dog. If I would have lived in the Northern part of the county, I would have had to kiss the dog three times as they got over 30". :) Roads are clear up there already, school was only delayed 2 hours in the morning. ..... It's a northern thing :)

I cheated today. I took out one block from each package and put sashing around them. I know, I know, I said I wasn't going to do it, but I thought it would be nice when I posted the picture to the SWN sewers what the blocks looked like for them to see it in an entire top. You know those "clothing people".....they have to see the pattern illustration to know what we're talking about. bwhahahahahahahahah

Sashing is either going to be just strips of fabric or checkerboard using all different scraps. Top should be 64 1/12: square unfinished (I made all sixteen blocks, so I have three of my own in the top). Then more checkerboard or whatever can be added for another border if I decide to make it larger.

How long do use suppose it will take from Montana to New York? I may just priority them to make sure.

Once they are in the mail, Patty, I will let you know all about Reproduction Fabrics! You must be patient :)

Excitement is in the air here in MN!!! It is snowing and COLD!!!! Good time to spend sewing and with a cup of hot tea or coffee nearby! :) THat is what I am doing tonight...working on mom's birthday present now that the blocks are out and on the sled!

Montana to New York..... bwhahahahaha....... two days. But then again, will the blocks be going Pony Express? No, No. just teasing you Jay.... I think when I got my fabric from Reproduction Fabrics it arrived faster than letters from my kids when they were at school less than two hours away.

Okay, I will be on the lookout for mail from Montana and Minnesota.....

Anyone else?

I haven't mailed my blocks yet, but they will be there on time! Pinki Promise. I'll mail them after the weekend when all this SNOW and ICE has dried up and I can drive to the post office. Until then, I'm going to sit back and enjoy that beautiful white snow while we have it.

Regardless, They'll be there by the 7th, as promised.
Thank Goodness for UPS overnight. Hahahaa.:bluesmile
May your bobbin always be full-

"If he could, he would live in a barn! Doesn't bother him one bit." Cowqueenie from another thread..........

Good evening red and white swappers!

Blocks arrived from Minnesota Yiipppppeeee Cowqueenie.....they are wonderful!.... I <3 them. Sorry to hear about your husband and that darn hole in the barn door and the cows getting out.......but, I guess it gave you some time to sew.

Anxious to see what arrives tomorrow.

Bhahahaha... NO it isn't................ I totally messed up and sweet Cowqueenie's block has nothing to do with a Hole in the Barn Door. Although she did say her husband could live in a barn.

No....Cowqueenie's block is _ _ _ _ _ _ _. (I'll tell you, those regional names mess me up all the time.)

HAAA!!!
You know? It is TRUE!!!! He WOULD live in a barn if he could! The man eats and breathes farming although he is a forman of a bunch of mechanics that work on busses! He TOTALLY wishes he could farm full time.

Now, about those cows getting out...I actually kinda thought about that as being a hint.....depends on how you really look at that block! I would think it has more to do with the cow's tail than them getting out! :)

Glad to know you got my blocks QM! I checked online here earlier today and I didn't see you had posted anything and I was a little worried! Yeah, I'm a worry wart too! The flaws in the blocks are cuz they are my firsties and I have a few burned fingers from being the anal ironer. :) IM SO EXCITED MY FRIENDS!!! :) I am going to Joann's tomorrow to check out if they have a clearance at mine! Saw on another posting that there has been a few ladies finding GOOD DEALS! That is how I am rewarding myself for getting the blocks to Patty on time! HE HEEEEEE!!!

A cow's tail? Now I'm really curious.
The ladies I work with saw me working on some of my blocks so I told them about this swap. They keep asking me if I got my red blocks back yet. I keep reminding them the deadline is not here yet. I think a couple of them are as excited to see them as I am. :dave:

Some of you have been quiet...... Hope everything is going smoothly with your blocks and you'll be able to get them in the mail.

BTW....today is one of my favorite days of the year; there is something about that little groundhog, Phil, that I just love.

My day has been so great.... it started with Phil not seeing his shadow this morning........

Then, the mailman is honking his horn to his van. He wants me to come outside to get the mail. I am thinking to myself, "Migawd, there must be a boatload that he won't put the mail in the mailbox!"

I hurry up and get my boots.....forget the coat...........................I run out to the van................

He hands me a box.......

They're seeds. My husband ordered seeds already?

No blocks. :nc:

I must have looked a bit disappointed because the postman just looked at me and took off.

I say don't piss off a quilter that is expecting mail!:bg:
