Hi! I've been lurking awhile, enjoying all the posts from the talented people on this board. Mom started me sewing by giving me a washcloth, and a BIG needle threaded with crochet cotton, and a couple of big old coat buttons to sew together when I was big enough to get on her nerves when she was sewing at the dining room table. 50 years later, that old (1919!) Singer is part of my collection. She replaced it with a Universal in 1960 that zig-zagged (ooh what new-fangled technology!) A few years later, the girl next door had Barbie dolls and lots of little Barbie clothes-I kept asking for a barbie of my own, and when Christmas rolled around, there was a Barbie under the tree, along with a couple of outfits Mom had sewed, and the pattern she had used. (anyone remember "ADVANCE" patterns??) I think there were 8 or 9 outfits in that pattern, a whole wardrobe-she said "well, which one do you want to make first??" I eventually sewed at least one of each view, and all by hand. By the time she felt I was old enough to handle the sewing machine, I had a pretty good idea of how things went together-darts and sleeves and gathers and bindings and such. By the time I took Home Ec, I had already been making some of my own clothes, and I have been sewing ever since.

I am new too, but I wanted to say welcome to you there in Seattle...that's where my grandbabies are...so far from me. :) I too used to get a doll at Christmas with clothes made by Mama. Started sewing young too. Isn't it good to see how many young women sew these days, when it seemed no one would only a few decades ago.
