What stops you from sewing? No, I don't mean life or schedules and kids. I mean what little niggling thing will put you off of sewing. I realized yesterday my serger/coverstitch machine needed to be rethreaded. I avoided doing this for such a long time. It had to be done so yesterday afternoon I changed the cones and away I went. Silly for something like that to stop the sewing. Sometimes if my sewing room is in a huge mess, that will stop me too. But, lately I have kept it pretty well cleaned up and surfaces somewhat clear.

Easy question, Mary!

Frustration!!!!!!!!

I am an extremely patient person but it used to stop me cold. I found I wouldn't go back to the project at all. Now when I've had it up to "here" (where ever the heck that is) I stop and just take a break. More often than not the solution comes to me and I can continue.

Mary,

A dirty sewing room is the biggest thing to keep me from sewing. The other day I was making my daughter rice bags to send her (her request, guess those books are heavy she is carrying around  ) and not remembering that I hadn't sewn down the open seam on one bag......I started to toss it, and rice everywhere. :bluesad:

(*&*(*%^*&*& now I have to get the vacuum to get those *&&^^%&^ rice from between the wide planks. So until I get the room picked up, I won't sew in it.

I also sew in little increments of time....say 5 or 10 minutes every hour. I'll sit down and sew a block or side seams then get up do some chores done and then go back to my sewing. I know this is possible because I have a room specifically for sewing, but it is amazing how much gets accomplished without setting aside hours at a time to sew. Also, I take my sewing to work and when I have finished everything I just sew for a few minutes (I do work for my husband and he is thankful I occupy myself rather than going over to his desk and cleaning his workspace  while he's on the phone)

Messy room, too many projects on the go at once, wrong colour thread in the serger:nervous: seriously, I HATE rethreading my serger and it's realyy not that hard.
I just found out my sister in law never picked up my old serger from my sisters house, I guess she doesn't want it. I may get it just to have one threaded in white at all times!!
Right now I have pieces of my slipcover muslin all over and the dog pulled some out of its pile to barf on it...:bang: why I don't know. These are the things that slow me down.

I don't have a sewing room and I sew in the kitchen - the thought that as soon as I have lugged everything out and got set up I will have 1/2 hour before I have to put it all away again is enough to make me think - is it worth it? and pick up the knitting instead..

Hey Magot since you're an "empty nester" now, you should grab one of the bedrooms and turn it into a sewing room with a day/trundle bed for sleepovers by your little eaglets.

the mess that always seems to end up on my sewing table, in my sewing room, etc etc etc. if I have to clean a place off to work then I tend to put it off for awhile and of course, it only gets worse!

laying out and cutting a pattern. If I had someone to layout and cut my patterns/quilt pieces, I would sew constantly. I also don't like doing the pattern alterations but laying out and cutting the pattern is the thing I put off the most.

I agree with everyone about the messy sewing room. When mine is a mess, I just don't want to sew. That's why I haven't done much sewing in a while. I need a whole weekend to myself to clean up in here. :whacky: Maybe this weekend (big sigh)

Up until this year, nothing kept me from sewing, but for some reason, I don't have the drive I did. whether it be lack of a new sewing machine I want badly, or sharing my sewing room with my computer, or what don't know.
but I love to sew, always looking for something to sew. didn't have to look far when my children were home, now only two of us.

Mary, you must have read my mind!:bluewink:

If having a messy sewing room made me not want to sew, I'd never sew--my sewing room is always a mess!

For me, I think it is sewing a project that turns out to be more of a chore than fun. Because window treatments are so expensive these days, I decided to make curtains for my kitchen. I got tablecloths--which I thought were thick enough to be opaque but once I got most of the curtains up, hubby complained that he could see through them, so I had the challenge of sewing smaller "curtains" to serve as a lining. This turned into the never ending project and ceased being fun at all! The sewing was easy (simple rolled/shirttail hems on the sewing machine), but it was also kind of boring. And then there was all that fabric to contend with as well......

I haven't been in the mood to sew since, but now I have one end of the loooonngg banners to hem for the church. Now the issue is getting these things sewn and pressed, without having them wrinkle up again!

I just tend to get distracted. I'll sew a little then wander off for a while or even just to the computer to see what you all are doing, then play a game or two and the time is gone.
I agree though, having the stuff out and easy to get to -- and walk away from really helps.

Having to rip something out. I have been known to just up and quit a project because I sewed two pieces together wrong. It takes so long and makes such a mess that I just dread doing it.

I soooooo agree! And how I wish I could just toss new yardage in the washer and it come out pressed and ready to go. I think my greatest hindrance is indecision...perhaps I do too much overthinking when it comes to projects.

After sew much mess, my house burned down last year. So when we rebuilt this yr. I had my hubby to built a table to fit inside a closet to hold my sewing machine..
I also had the builder's to put plugs inside my closet as well as the outside wall...inside I plug my machine up...and the outside I can use for my Iron or whatever...above, I hava two shelf's above to store small storage contains that hold trims ribbons and such...plus, right over my machine, he built a cover like that has a light right over my machine.,plus I have room underneath the table for large containers to hold some fabric....It really doesnt take up that much space...just the fact that I added a two small folding table next to were I sew....one to iron on and such..I use the other to cut on...and all this is in just one corner of my sunroom...but it can do for anyroom ..Of course, I wouldnt mind having a whole room as well..lol..But this has really helped out on the clutter and mess, for me anyay..

I'm making a coat and it snowed this evening so I better get on it.

An expensive fabric. I just cut out the most expensive fabric I ever bought, wool (is it what's called worsted in English? In French, it's laine bouillie...), to make a coat... I'm so scared to mess it up it's just not moving along!

But more generally, as for others, the laying out and cutting part is the most - and probably the only - tedious step in sewing for me.

Hand sewing or mending. If there is a lot of mending piling up I have a hard time starting something new. I am getting better about finishing my handwork a little at a time. Also when I get into a rut & make the same thing over & over I have a hard time motivating myself to move to a new project. right now I am making rice packs & pillowcases for a Dec. craft show. I have the rice packs all serged now I have to fill & hand close them. I think I will get DD to help fill them this weekend & I can close them while watching TV.

I'm terrible when it comes to mending too.
I have a jacket in the closet that I haven't worn in two years because it needs the lining tacked down at the hem for a few inches.

When my sewing room is a mess,I have to clean up before I start another project.Plus I make a promise to myself, to finish a project before starting another. If my sewing machine goes wonky and needs re threading/bobbin checked.

Sewlight -You loosened my brain. I have been thinking and thinking about this question. And not getting any sewing or quilting done in the meantime. I don't like to start a project until I finish one- sort of like a crazy useless pledge to myself. I plan a lot and even buy and organize the fabric and pattern, but not necessarily start. If I am nervous about a started project or don't like it, my sewing room becomes tidied and organized many times. My ironing gets completed and more things are taken up and down stairs than I really want. I don't even mind ripping things out! And I mend but I don't get my sewing or quilting done! I am hung up.

My biggest stopper is the mess on my sewing table. I had it cleaned off and ready to finish my babies quilt I started before she was born and everytime I lay it out on the table someone comes along and says can you make this for me or can you hem this for me, or can you sew this up I ripped it bla bla bla. Last thing I made was last week I made all the kids bags to hold their loot for Trick or treat and the remants are still on my sewing table. Now I know I won't use that fabric for another year so I can put it away but it's still there!!!! AWWWEEEEEEEEEEEEE. Maybe tomorrow. The rest of the house is clean when my sewing room is not because I'm not sewing!!!!! My husbands happy. ROFL
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Since writing my hang up earlier today, I actually have got a lot done tonight, but have thought of another hang up. For some reason, I think if I have to change my thread colour or machine settings I am wasting time ?!? So when I have one colour thread on my machine I look around for everything else that needs that colour (and not usually all that important) and mend or sew or finish, before changing the thread and getting on to what I really need or want to do. Oh, the things we do to ourselves with our minds and habits!!

I like to finish all projects that use the colour I have my serger threaded with. I don't find it a drawback. It DOES save time. What I usually do is lay out my fabrics for cutting by colour. I'd rather be sewing than rethreading machines.

What really holds me back from sewing?

My sewing room is in the basement and my joints hurt when I use the stairs, so I tend to avoid them. I also have some back problems that keep me from doing a lot of things, including sewing. The other thing that holds me back is the junk and boxes that my husband tends to pile up in the sewing room. Why is my sewing room and studio so attractive to people looking for a place to stack junk?

At least we finally got it cleaned up enough for me to squeeze in there and do some work! :)

Ohhh, I hate to admit this but...anything new that I have never tried before!! And I hate this about me, am aware of it (most of the time,) but don't know how to overcome it...If I take a class and someone shows me, then I'm okay...I think it is the frustration of not understanding/following directions properly..then trying and trying and still not getting it right (b/c I'm still reading the directions incorrectly...lol..)
You know, at almost 60 yrs old, I usually don't care about mishaps, faux pas, etc...but, dang, I HATE that frustrated feeling...sigh..oh, well...

Clearing up my sewing room. Usually, that just involves clearing off the cutting table and ironing board. But, for some reason and if I've had a little between projects, things get placed on my cutting board and I just don't want to clean it up and put the stuff where it really belongs.

Im suffering from "I cant sew today because..." right this moment.

Reasons I cant sew!
5) Sewing room is trashed
4) I have to pre wash fabric
3) Serger is threaded in the wrong color
2)I have to Iron everything that I have prewashed
and the #1 reason I cant sew
My kids no longer want "homemade" clothes. They want "popular" clothes....what the heck is popular clothes? And who taught me 6 year old that word.

1. UFOs. UFOs! If I have something unfinished, I feel like a jerk. And then I put my sewing off because I don't want to finish the project.

2. MENDING. I am seriously considering bagging up my mending and giving it to our local Free Store (like a thrift store but, um, everything's free) because I HATE mending and I'm not getting to it anytime fast.

3. When my sewing room is grungy. I don't mean messy - I have no problem putting stuff away. But when the carpet feels dingy and it just has that LOOK to it. I usually ask my husband to sweep it out, then I do some reorg. and dusting and I feel refreshed.

4. Like IsabellaB - Expensive fabric, for me too. I will "save it" instead of using it (usually because I have not also bought the accoutrement / notions for the project - like the lining fabric, buttons, etc. Reminder to self: but EVERYTHING at once and just dive in!). Alternatively, when I do "cheap" sewing with some remnant or whatever and I am just being frugal but not in love with what I sew. I will lose interest in the project which then puts me back to #1!

This post has been a good way for me to determine what stops me from sewing..... the best I can come up with is:
1. When a project gets mucked up and I walk away from it, sometimes it takes me a little while to get started on it again - in the meantime, nothing else gets done
2. Junk on my sewing area.
3. Cutting out patterns
4. Getting to the fabric store to buy material and patterns (it's over an hour away).

Seems to me these problems can all be overcome -hmm.... maybe I'll go downstairs right now and organize my area a bit!

If I walk away *at all* sometimes I lose my drive. Usually this is on my more "frugal" or "practical" sewing. Right now I have a skirt I have to "push through" so I can sew something else.

We moved in July 1 and I finally got my sewing room to be functional a few weeks ago. This is the room where all the moving boxes went when we didn't know what was in them or where they should go.
My first job down here was not what it was cracked up to be, plus needing to be in bed by 8:30-9:00pm so I could be up at 4:30am kind of put me in a type of depressed mood so I didn't have the energy/desire to sew. Well, I switched jobs and took two weeks off between to get my spirits up again and to set up the sewing room. The sewng machine got to see the light of day again. I tackled, and somewhat conquered, gathering for the bottom of my dd's dress, put in a magnetic closure on a bag that's been sitting around since before we moved and finished a pair of pants with rick rack around the edges for my dd (that has also been kicking around since NJ).
I know this was supposed to be about what keeps me from sewing but I'm just so happy to want to sew again that I had to tell someone!!! :bg:
It took me a little while to realize that I was in some sort of mini-depression. When I finally acknowledged the fact it was much easier to let it go and get back to being myself again.

I never feel on top of my stuff in my sewing area. Also, we have been planning to move for several months and finally did the end of July. Since then we have been living in a very temporary situation but I still try to set up my sewing area. It just never seems to be done to my satisfaction.... I figured I am just making excuses for the real problem - fear of failure!!

I dont know about anyone else but when I hit a snafoo while sewing it stops my from physically sewing. But I will spend the time between that and going back to it thinking about it constantly. Like these pockets I am making for my Ds classroom, sounds like an easy task but its going on a month now and all I can think about is getting them done right. I spent an entire conversation with my boss thinking about it the other day!!:bang:

Hey, WOW! I finally figured out how to get myself on this forum! I love it when I learn something new!?? URGH!!

I have been enjoying reading about the reasons that keep you all from sewing and I sure agree with a lot of them, like the messy sewing room and when I have lots of other peoples' mending requests hanging over me, and needing to rethread the serger. But on the other hand- Don't hate me- I love to cut out new projects. That is actually a very BIG problem for me. I'm not kidding here, I probably have 100+ things cut out. I love thinking up and starting new things. For me it's the follow through.

We bought/built a new house last year after 4 years of selling our home, moving around, in and out of an RV, etc. And I've finally gotten ALL my sewing and fabric sorted and organized. I have become so disgusted with myself that I'm on a mission to finish projects. But that doesn't keep me from starting new ones anyway. I actually found some projects that were cut out and ready to sew that date back to my daughter's Cabbage Patch dolls when she was 8 years old (she just celebrated her 31st birthday).

As I have organized everything this time I have learned to face some facts about my self. Some of this also comes from the fact that I turned 50 a few months ago and have been obsessed with "what will I do with the rest of my life?". Here are some things I am changing or instituting as "Rules To Sew By".

1. Any mending project that has been unfinished for more than 6 months, and/or unmissed by its owner, is able to be donated to Goodwill or thrown away without regret or self-condemnation.
2. I am a big girl and/or ADULT and can say "NO!" to loved ones, friends, and myself.
3. Any family member or friend who shows no gratitude or respect for previous lovingly created gifts will get none in the future (like giving my quilts to their dogs, or selling maternity clothes in garage sales and then having the nerve to get pregnant again a month later and ask for new ones), and I will not feel obligated or guilty.
4. Life is short- I will sew what I enjoy.
5. You (I) can never have too many sergers.

For years I was very intimidated by other people's complaints about threading their sergers and so didn't get one until this year. I researched for months and then bought one (myself) for my birthday. Now I am in love and can not figure out how I lived without it for 50 years. But the rethreading of the thing is still an issue for me because I find I want to use it for everything and am always needing to change thread color and switch it from one function to another. So now I'm saving and hinting for a second serger so I can keep them set up for different functions.

Well, I feel inspired and am off to the sewing room to work on Christmas projects. (First on the list is my daughter's present from 2003, a quilt that I needed to learn a new skill in order to finish. That's another thing that keeps me from finishing a project.)

It took me a little while to realize that I was in some sort of mini-depression. When I finally acknowledged the fact it was much easier to let it go and get back to being myself again.

Maureen, I relate. Congrats for getting back on the horse and I'm glad you're feeling better!

Right on! I think I'm going to get the courage to "move on" the mending and get rid of it. Yikes!

#4, I could really use that one. SEW WHAT I ENJOY.

Emmy, you hit the nail on the head with this one. I have the same issues (plus kids), and because of the constant 'stacking' can never find the one thing I need for the current project. Of course I don't want to go out and buy something I know I have somewhere in my sewing room. :bang:

That's probably my biggest reason for not sewing. That and actually making the pattern. I'll design it, but I hate piecing the pattern. (I really need to learn draping better  )

But if it's something for a client -no problem, I have a real deadline, and will get it done.

I have 44 skating dresses to sew by the end of November. 22 of one and 20 of the other. The monotony of the same dress over and over and over and over and over:cry: ......you get the point!

At least there's a nice paycheck at the end!

1) Organization....
Well I know my problem is that in August I got new shelf units for my sewing room but decided to paint before installing them. Painting went well. But....my niece decided to come to visit before I was able to start installing and organizing the shelves. So I had to do a quick installation and dump everything somewhere on the shelves. Ever since, I have been having trouble finding everything and want to organize...the way I had planned on after painting.

2) Energy....
Now I don't feel up to taking things out and starting to re-organize all over again. So I just put off sewing as I get frustrated when I know I have something but can't find where I ended up putting it.

3) Age....
And sometimes it is right in front of me but I can't seem to see for looking.

Anyone got a magic pill for 2 & 3! :bg:

Hey Kim, want to come clean up my sewing area so i feel like sewing again?

Nope, sorry Lyn. I pretty much have a once a year rule for organizing my sewing area and I've used it up

What stops me is when I realize I don't have all the right bits and pieces to go with the project, especially the right interfacing. I guess I'm not carefull enough in the fabric store to remember everything because I'll think I have it already at home. And my serger needs new needles. I don't get to the fabric store very often because I think I have some kind of phobia (I know this is so silly) of driving my big van in the city and parking it. I'm a small town girl who learned to drive in a town of three traffic lights and never ever had to parallel park. You'd think after 20 years living in a big city I'd have gotten used to driving here but I haven't. If I had a chauffer (spelling?) I'd be laughing.

I got both of my daughters pants hemmed tonight. I really have to teach the 2 of them how. I thought I had better get the ones done for DD2 before she gets to big to wear them (see Good News post). Youngest Dd filled rice packs for me & I worked on hand sewing them & I made 2 receiving blankets for DD tonight. I guess my tracks started moving again.

Mary, sounds like we need to be discussing "organization tips". For it seems like that is what delays most sewers. Mine I have to say is all of the prep work. I find having to practically design a pattern all over, due to necessary alterations, is so aggravating this will delay my project. I wish the pattern companies would consider more than just the "B" cup when they design a pattern.

This is a great topic. I really agree with the last poster re: re-drafting patterns. I am a D cup, and very curvy. I think we must sometimes "schedule" sewing time for ourselves. even put on the calendar, in a time slot, otherwise, it is "postponed", and we feel frustrated. I feel so much better with regular sewing, and that also means the "inch by inch" kind too, slipping in little time periods. Organization of work space is essential, but it doesn't have to be perfect, as long as we can use the machine, and iron, and cut out. I find sewing gives me energy, as it is a relaxing and renewing break, and, also, I think we actually enjoy the problem solving (within reason). A "fit partner" is a big help, and when not possible, a small hand held mirror, to check the rear and side views. Accurate measurements are a MUST, otherwise, frustration is the main mood!!!!! I glean the sewing sites for tips and answers, and sewing books too, even very old ones (lots of info there). We should try out various feet and gadgets. Choose a thread cone that matches several projects, and then go!!!! I refer to my regular machine. Look at RTW for style and sewing tips, even try on, and think where to change for ourselves. Sewing makes me happy, when I am away from it too long, I get very sad. Happy sewing ladies.
