I just finished a skirt for dd to wear for her Thanksgiving program at school. I want to embellish a cream long sleeved top I have to go with it, like the white one in the picture (excuse her pathetic attempt at modeling, I gave up trying to take a decent pic lol). I was thinking of adding ruffles to either the sleeves or bottom, or both. Also I wanted to add some applique with the scraps, but don't know what design to do. I don't want to make a Turkey as I want her to be able to wear it for more than Tgiving:dave: . My sleep deprived mommy brain is out of creativitiness (is that even a word??) Any ideas?

in this picture you can see the skirt and fabric better.

Thanks in advance!

If I were going to do it.....
I would do leaf appliques on the shirt. I wouldn't bother with the bottom of the shirt because it would just blend in with the skirt. I would also embelish(sp) the collar. The sleeves I probably wouldn't, but that is because I don't like to wear sleeves with ruffles at the bottom. They drive me crazy. But they do look pretty so if your little girl doesn't mind I say go for it.

I like the leaf idea, floating down to several near the bottom the shirt.

If you wanted to do something different, this is something I did years and years ago: took fall leaves (for her shirt I'd use small leaves) and painted the front with glitter acrylic paint to match the rest of the outfit and just pressed them on to the fabric. It picked up the veins in the leaves and did not wash off the fabric. Looked real cute.

I like the ribbon idea with the colors in the skirt also with a matching hair bow. I love the skirt. I love the model even more. She is beautiful.

Please do NOT get upset with me, but I really think that an off white shirt (oyster, or even a tan ) would look much better with those colors in the skirt.. Don't get me wrong, the white is great and will look great with the embellishments on .. But the off-white would look more like a well co-ordinated outfit .. This IMHO -- Okay, I'll give myself 20 lashes, no attacks , Please..

LOL Libby, I am not mad at you, I TOTALLY Agree! If you reread my post, I am going to embellish a CREAM colored top, LIKE the white one in the picture. I just threw the skirt on her for size and a pic, she was already wearing the white top with a pair of pants and I didn't want to put the cream one on just for a picture.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. I'm leaning toward appliqueing some leaves. The ribbon sounds fantastic, but I'm not allowed to buy more stuff LOL. I don't have any ribbon that matches so I'm going to just use the fabric scraps.

I'll post pics when its done.

(still giggling at the thought of using the white top :bg:)

ok, so i couldn't get a leaf to look right for the life of me! I didn't want to buy any more material such as ribbon so I just used my scraps. So I just did a square like a quilt block and freehanded a K with a zig zag, then appliqued it to the shirt. Considering I've never made a quilt block before, I just looked at a quilt I have and winged it, I think it came out alright. Wish I had an embroidery machine to have done the "K". Anyway, thanks for all your advice! Wish I could have taken it LOL! Here are pics of the finished project

Very nicely done. Looks like you did OK to me on the block, but I am not an experienced quilter.

I love it!

You free handed the "K"???
This is a great outfit for the holidays!
Did you use a pattern for the skirt? If so can I get the name and number.....Like I need another skirt pattern...lol

I just bought the "redondo" If your little one likes skirts I would have to say its a must have. It sews up so fast. I looked at my pieces for about 45 min. before I got brave enough to head to the machine but once I started it was done before I knew it.

Again great job on the outfit. Your little one is going to wear it with pride.

Spring,
the skirt is not a pattern, I actually have the directions posted on the SewWhat's New website, here is the link

http://sew-whats-new.com/CMS/content/view/211/46/

If you want more specific directions for the one I just made let me know. I think I still have the measurements and such.

I also have the Redondo skirt pattern. I tried to make one from some scraps a few weeks ago and nearly threw it out the window. No matter how many pins I use and how slow and patient I try to be while sewing it, I keep getting little folds:bang:

Any tips for sewing it??

YES, I have tips at www.banberryplace.com/forum. I don't pin mine at all and when I did try pinning it I got the folds too. Please let me know if you want to talk more about sewing this, once you 'get it' it's CAKE :-)

thank you corie! If I get brave enough to try it again I just might have to contact you LOL! I also have the Hermosa shirt but haven't even opened the package since the Redondo disaster. I love your tutorial, I found your website awhile back, very nice. I'll go check your forums out again, it's been awhile. Thanks again!

Wendy, I've made a couple of twirl skirts from another pattern but I'm just wondering what sort of ratios/measurements you used to make the panels in the middle tier. It comes together looking really effective.

Thanks, Pauline

thanks Pauline! When I've got two free hands (clingy baby today), I'll dig out the measurements I used.

I don't know where I put the measurements, but I took the skirt and measured it.

The top tier is about 33inches including seam allowance. Which is about 1.5 times my dd's waist.

the middle tier is made up of 12 strips measuring 6"x9" including seam allowance. with the strips sewn together it totals about 66", which is aproximately 2x's the width of the top tier. I usually am for the tiers to be 2x's wider for a full skirt.

My measurments are never exact when I'm making these, but close enough, it is very forgiving ;)

If you have any more questions let me know. On the Sew What's New website Mary has posted an article which has the basic info on how I make these skirts.
