Does anyone know how to increase the size of a variable star pattern from a 48 finished quilt to about 72 inches? Thanks so much. |

This is hard to answer unless you could point me to the quilt pattern you are planning on making. Are the blocks in the quilt 12" finished? If so, how many rows both across and down are in the quilt? For example, this Compuquilt site (http://www.compuquilt.com/blockimg/FSBQuilt/VariableStar/FSB-VariableStar.htm) has a quilt pattern for a Variable Star quilt that is available in PDF format (click on Pattern and Instructions). When you look at the pattern it says the size is 84" x 84". By my calculations that is an error. There are 6 - 12" finished squares across and 7 - 12" finished squares down with 6" finished borders. Inside the borders, the star blocks would be 72" x 84" finished. Then adding the 6" borders the quilt is really 84" x 96". If you took this quilt and made only 5 squares across and 6 squares down, then added the 6" borders, the quilt would be 72" x 84" finished. Hope this helps. TTFN from

Measure the finished block size.. Divide 48 by that number.. Then, Divide 72 by that number to see how many blocks you would need to measure 72 instead of the 48..
