Don't know if this goes here... I want to attach rhinestones to spandex...can I use the hotfix rhinestones or do I have to glue/sew? Any other ideas? I bought a bag of cheap flatback/glue-on rhinestones last night but only glued one onto a scrap piece of fabric...seemed to hold alright but I don't want to stat making a nice top to find that it won't work after it's too late to go back... Thanks for any help! -A |

| The only ones that will stay on fabric through washings are the Swarovski crystals, pearls,metals, & rinestuds. My DD bought an expensive pair of pants that has embroidery with over 80 crystals down the pant legs. First washing in cold water they fell off. They had been glued on but not hot fixed. I'm in the process of putting the good Swarovski crystals on for her. In all my research these will hold & the only ones I'd trust. You can even put them on swim suits & they'll stay on. This is just my feelings on the subject. With the high price of the pants she just thought they were put on to stay on & not come off in the first washing. |

| Yeah I guess it depends on if the girl I'm making the top for wants to pay more, or if she's just wearing it one time (though the prices at a shop in the city aren't too bad)....I was thinking about getting the hot setting tool even--- you don't think it will ruin/melt the spandex? |

I don't think so. I've known a lot of people to use them on leotards with no problems. it sure is a whole lot easier than doing the glue-it-yourself method.

Ive not done it but I think it may be useful if you stretch the fabric when putting the stones on. If they are put on whilst not stretched and then it stretches they may ping off. |

Though I have not hot-fixed, I am considering getting the tool. I have "stoned" with the glue gun and individual rhinestones. What a  ! I told the client I would rather sew twice as many than use the gun again.Anyway. the one I used the gun on never had a pop problem. Everything else I have sewn. | I saw a demo on TV & the woman said to stretch any material that is stretchy as you apply the crystals. Makes sense to me. I buy my crystals at Michaels and they sell the hot fix gun as well. It's $ 10.00. Not bad considering other places are higher for one. This one is put out by Swarovski & comes with 7 tips plus a universal hot spot tip for all novelty shaped hot fix trims. The hot fix crystals are $3.99 for a pack of 18. That's the 4 mm size. I think all are the same price per pack. All Michaels stores don't carry them though. I have to drive over 40 miles to get mine & we have a huge Michaels right here. If i'm going to put all this work into something I want it to hold up. |

It really beats the "set" ones with the prongs which pop off and prongs loosen and snag things. I had a friend whose daughter was running for Miss Oklahoma. She borrowed one of my dress forms (Matilda) to put her daughter's ballet outfit on so that it would be stretched properly when she glued the crystals on. The non-glued crystals were so much cheaper she used those. I just love the hot fix though...they are wonderful!!!

Michaels keeps the crystals and the wand in the crafters section, not the the area with the yarn and beads. I spent about an hour and a half looking all over the wrong quadrant of Michaels one night. Instead of them being in the back quadrant, they were up front near the registers where the paint, foam "stuff", and a lot of other things I never "visit" were. At least Hobby Lobby made more sense. They were with the beads (which is one of the areas I checked at Michaels). Hancocks usually keeps theirs with the bridal things.

I got the Swarovski hotfix rhinestones this weekend and put a bunch on the Showgirl style top last night and I gotta say I really like them! Had a few fall from the applicator and needed to take time to scratch off the glue (my poor fingers got burned from trying to get the fallen jewel ASAP off the fabric), but in the end all turned out well. I ended up taping/securing the fabric so it was slightly stretched as I attached the stones and I didn't have any problems when I tried it on (and it looks fine when laid flat). I definitely had to make sure the applicator tip didn't touch the fabric at all or else it will burn/melt the fabric, but I was able to shift the rhinestone over before the glue set so it covered up the mistakes  Tonight I'll make the gloves and will hopefully be able to post some pictures soon

AGAIN? Funny - Last night on TV I saw a clip of Glen Campbell singing and as I was opening this site I was thinking about stars of my yesteryears and humming Rhinestone Cowboy - there on the list of topics was Rhinestone! Just the other day my boyfriend said to me "so if I get a cowboy hat you could cover it in those things and I could be a Rhinestone Cowboy?" I told him I could, but that I think it may give off the wrong impression to strangers! Thank you ladies for the comments/compliments.
