Hey Guys

I wanna make my 8 year old a new dress for the upcoming Christmas season. It needs to be sorta of grown up because she is fond of telling me she is not a baby anymore.

Anybody have pattern suggestions?

Anybody else dressing up there kids for the holiday?

mmmm I have to threaten to shave his head to get him to put on a button down shirt and plain pants for special occasions, his hair is halfway past the nose now,:bluesmile
but regarding girl patterns, Ottobre has some nice dress patterns for the 8 year old set, my daughter is 7 and still likes ruffles and gathers so far. We are doing dark blue velour that has sparkes on the bottom of the skirt and sleeves.

hmmm...Christmas dress/outfit for an 8 yr old who is not a little girl anymore. You're right to keep in mind that she does not want to be made to feel littler than she's trying to be. How about these two from simplicity?

Thise are really good Andrea - I have an aversion to the trend of dressing young girls as sex kittens ( seems to happen here a lot) The amount of thongs that 12 year olds wear is horrifying!

I just took my 9 year old sister pattern shopping with me.
These are what she picked out. Im not sure how fancy you are talking about. My sister is a velvet diva. If we go out to dinner she wears ruffles....lol

I like the drop waist ones. I don't know about the Lizzy Maguire ones they just really don't seem dressed up.

After searching all day For something to do I sort of thought. I would love to do something akin to an old fashioned Coat Dress. But I don't even know where to begin.

I love the idea.

I have wanted to make these for my girls for the last 2 years....maybe this year.

Now I know these are coats but I dont see why you cant change the pattern just a little to make them a dress. I will keep my eye out for you.
Oh hey did you check ebay? I bought the cutest pattern for a smocked dress for the 70s and I paid pennys for it.

Good Luck

Can you go with her to the fabric store so she can pick out a pattern herself? Girls her age are often picky and even if you find something YOU like it may not be her style. My heart breaks to think of the grandparents who handcraft something for their grandchildren and the recipient doesn't love it.

It feels like I'm always plugging Ottobre. They have some rather sophisticated girls' and pre-teen sized outfits. They often aren't very formal styles, but with the right detail you could dress them up considerably. If you check out their current issue (http://www.ottobredesign.com/lehdet_js/2006_5/all_designs_5-06.pdf) (clicking will download pdf) and find something you like I would be happy to trace the pattern in the correct size and send it along with directions to you! I have the last four issues as well.

I dressed my kids up for Thanksgiving and am about to go work on a wool dress for my little girl, for Christmas parties.
