This is a basic silly question but what should my tension be set at? For some reason, it get's out of whack and it takes me forever to find out how to correct it again. The bobbin thread keeps getting all bunched up and causes the machine to jam. It's so frustrating but I can't figure out how to fix it. Right now the top tension is set at 2 BUT that's after me messing with it.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

We need more info than you gave us...what kind of machine, fabric, thread and needle...(all machines are created different.) Knowing what you're doing is also helpful.

Well... I have a Brother machine. VX1120 to be exact. I'm using regular all purpose thread while trying to hem my work scrubs. They are a cotton/polyester blend.

Like I said, this has happened in the past which caused me to stop sewing for months... my mom is actually the one who "figured out" what was wrong with it. She says it was just a fluke and in reality has no clue how she fixed it.

Do you know what i mean by the lower thread getting all jammed up?

Rule of thumb is upper tension should be between 4 & 4 1/2 for most applications if you are using "all purpose" thread and a medium weight fabric.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

First, make sure top and bobbin is threaded right. Refer to manuel or go to sewusa.com for threading instructions. Then set top tension on 4 as Tom suggested. If to tight back off a little til u get the correct look. Make sure u thread top thread with pressure foot up,thread will go in tension better. Use a scrap to sew on until u get tension right. Good sewing.

She may have done something as simple as raising the presser foot when she threaded the machine which opens the tension and puts the thread in position for the machine to regulate the tension. Another thing to always check is that your bobbin is going the correct direction and is under the spring in the bobbin case. This is VERY important as the spring in the bobbin case regulates the tension on the bobbin thread.

WOW... I've never left the foot up when I've threaded my needle !!! Guess I learn something new everyday. Thanks. I'm going to try and get things fixed today. Thanks again for all your help.

BTW: When I first started sewing... I made several projects with the foot in the up postition !!!! Didn't even know it went down. Picture that ! My family was nice when I presented them with what I had made them. It's only now, several years later, I hear the comments on those first few pieces!

Hey jebjow we all had to start somewhere and we've all had silly mistakes and frustrations along the way and still do. Keep at it and keep posting your questions. We'll all help if we can.

Then, if and when life gets in the way and you are away from a sewing machine for a while. It is amazing how much you forget and the silly mistakes you make when you first get started "again".
