1. 1966 in high school sewing class. I hit the ground running. We were required to make a skirt and blouse in class. I made a skirt, blouse and two dresses.
2.1966..40 years.
3.Don't recall.
4.Still wish I could always get a good hem on a perfectly round garment...it is always touch and go for me.
5.The most important step starts in the beginning with the first pin in the fabric. That is laying the fabric straight and putting your fabric on the straight of grain.
6.Pattern layout I think. I do rather use the guide for the layout but I often lay the large and long pieces first and then lay the short pieces. It often seems that they don't do the best job of saving fabric. When sewing I'm pretty much by the book.
7.There are things that I don't like to do/make but I can't really think of something that I can't do.
8.EVerything but I find a had a lot of satisfaction when I was sewing for people, esp the square dance dresses...they were fun. I also really love childrens' clothing and fitted jackets.
9.I HATE ALTERATIONS in garments already made and I hate making mistakes!!!
10.I don't care what it is..I like almost all fabrics except....
11.I dislike chiffon the most and I dislike tuille almost as much because they crawl and tuille is hard to see....they hate me too...so the feeling is mutual.
12.I don't have a favorite pattern company. It depends on how the pattern will fit...buttrick and vogue for young figures, mccalls and simplicity for more mature figures..then after that, I haven't found a bad pattern company yet.
13.cutting and fitting and fitting and cutting
14.Not much right now, monograms on robes for Christmas, just finishing a rag quilt (first one) for Christmas...few Christmas items
15.it isn't what was said, it was the glint and thrill in the eyes of the person(s) who tried my work on for the first time.
16.My husband who often does housework for me so I can sew and also let me have the biggest room in the house for my sewing room!
17.A bad incident that happened several years ago when I was sewing for the public...got serious blame for fabric/pattern and problems that were not my fault... I still get very upset.
18.I make something and move on...I don't dwell on my efforts. It is all good if I can please someone.
19.If I enjoy doing it, it is useful and the end product looks nice, I am happy.
20.Pretty decent cook.
21.It is always wonderful to get a gift. I wouldn't care.
22.I have 3 large parrots, a macaw, yellow nape and a Congo African Grey.

1. How long have you been seriously sewing?
About four years.

2. When did you first learn to sew and how many years ago was that?
I remember starting sewing around age 8, and that was 21 years ago. Holy cow!

3. What is the last "trick" you mastered?
Hiding any thread ends by clever handwork.

I also made a DIY simple straight skirt (four darts, side zipper, side slash) and successfully made a facing for the waist. It fits perfectly and no pattern needed!

4. What technique do you wish you could master?
Hand-embroidery! I fear I never will.

5. What is the most underrated sewing technique - the step you would never skip?
Under-stitching.

6. What is the most overrated sewing technique - the step you usually DO skip?
Pressing a fabric - I just take it out of the dryer and fold it on the table right away.

7. What can other sewers do that you can't do?
I am terrified of making couch cushion sleeves, slipcovers, any home dec really.

8. What is your favorite thing to sew (end product)?
For some reason, I just love making baby buntings - you know, coverall patterns usually with or without a hood. You can use different fabric combinations, they're easy to line, and you can put ears or tail on them - darling! They also don't use a lot of yardage, either.

9. What do you dislike sewing?
I hate my mending. I seriously will PAY ANOTHER SEAMSTRESS to do it!

10. What fabric(s) do you love to sew on?
I like sewing flannel and medium-to-heavy broadcloths. I also recently discovered how easy it is to sew with fleece (see my last project below), and even tho' I am a fiber snob and dislike 100% poly, it's fun to sew it (no edge finishing!).

11. What fabric(s) do you hate to sew on?
Anything slippery, lineny loose weaves, tulle.

12. Who makes your favorite patterns?
I have a soft spot for Folkwear (http://www.folkwear.com/) because the patterns are so unique, simple, and the business owners are very sweet and helpful. I also like Kwik Sew (http://www.kwiksew.com/) because they are very true-to-size, have sturdy paper, color coding, and lots and lots of labels for all parts of the pattern. I have mixed feelings about Ottobre (http://www.ottobredesign.com/) but am also addicted to their styles.

13. If you had a sewing lackey, what three duties would he / she perform for you?
1. Organize my fabric, which I am always messing up.
2. Trace my Ottobre patterns and add seam allowances!
3. Sweep out my sewing room every couple days (and all the hobo spiders in there).

14. Post a picture of the last project you sewed (or a description, if you can't find a picture):

http://kelly.hogaboom.org/tutorials/images/20061106cathat02.jpg

The two hats took about a half hour to make and cost under $3!

15. Nicest thing someone has said you you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee):
The other day my girlfriend said I was "the most successful housewife" she knows and that my sewing was amazing.

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
My husband. He tells me all the time how proud of me he is. He also "forced" me to open a sewing room (get rid of our guest bedroom) and makes time for me often by taking the kids, doing the chores, and cooking dinner. He also designed my sewing business website and business card.

17. What's a sore spot you have when it comes to sewing?
So many products are made via slave labor overseas with the end result being clothes and home dec stuff is *so* cheap. Sometimes I feel silly for sewing at all - I spend almost MORE money and a lot of my time. I also don't like how little people value the craft because of this.

18. Post a picture of something you are proud of sewing, or describe it and tell us why you are proud:

http://kelly.hogaboom.org/tutorials/images/20061023icebat01.jpg

Ice Bat (http://www.shopatron.com/product/product_id=PUL10071/322.0.8768.0.0.0.0). I took a basic costume pattern and made it into this stuffed-animal toy we own - who reminds me of my son Nels. That was his Halloween costume. I am proud of it because it turned out exactly as I envisioned it.

19. Give your sewing philosophy in two or three sentences:
I think sewing should be an empowering activity that embraces one's own personal values and tastes. I wish I could find more students and more mentors near me.

20. Name something else you are good at:
I am a great cook, a decent writer, and a cuddly Mama. (oops, three things. Did I mention I am modest, too?) ;-)

21. What do you wish someone would sew for YOU?
I would really either like a wool coat (peacoat-style), some jammies, or a nightie! I can't remember the last time someone sewed for me (I think it was Jessica from this site, two years ago for a swap).

22. Name something the S-W-N folks might not know about you:
I change my haircolor and style constantly.
see the mundane life of a housewife.

Big showy things that make my daughters look good.

15. Nicest thing someone has said you you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee):

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
Me, Tony tolerates it - I have a friend at work who understands however..

http://resmiranda.co.uk/PagesAndTexts/Katie%20Moss.htm my girlie in her wedding dress. She rarely wears anything feminine being a stomp around the wilderness in big boots kind of girl - but occasionally she does like to dress up.

21. What do you wish someone would sew for YOU?
Sewing something tends to represent time to me - so anything someone made would be an indication of love in that they wanted to spend their time making me a gift. In that sense - I could care less - If I were to BUY someone's services - a well tailored suit.

22. Name something the S-W-N folks might not know about you:

1. How long have you been seriously sewing?
49 years.

2. When did you first learn to sew and how many years ago was that?
1957 - my freshman year in high school. 49 years --- yuccccckkkk, I'm gettting old!!!

3. What is the last "trick" you mastered?
Full bust alterations on a dress/jacket pattern.

4. What technique do you wish you could master?
Using my rolled hemmer feet on my machines. They really frustrate me.

5. What is the most underrated sewing technique - the step you would never skip?
There are actually 2 major ones that are often skipped over -- understitching and pressing as you go.

6. What is the most overrated sewing technique - the step you usually DO skip?
If I skip anything, it will be the stay-stitching unless I can see the fabric I'm working with necessitates it.

7. What can other sewers do that you can't do?
I don't know as I've never really compared my skills to someone else's.

8. What is your favorite thing to sew (end product)?
I tend to like garment sewing the best but I also quilt.

9. What do you dislike about sewing?
The tediousness of laying out and cutting patterns.

10. What fabric(s) do you love to sew on?
Silk charmeuse, linen type fabric, corduroy is fun, challis, micro suede and ultra suede.

11. What fabric(s) do you hate to sew on?
Georgette is undoubtedly my worst laying out and cutting nightmare. However, I've discovered that if I lay it out on felt, it is much more manageable when cutting and I rotary cut as much as possible.

12. Who makes your favorite patterns?
No one specifically. I have a wide variety of patterns in my pattern library.

13. If you had a sewing lackey, what three duties would he / she perform for you?
mending, alterations and laying out and cutting patterns

14. Post a picture of the last project you sewed (or a description, if you can't find a picture):

15. Nicest thing someone has said to you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee):
That I come highly recommended for bridal/prom garment sewing. I have a friend that likes to tell people there isn't anything I can't sew.

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
My very, very sweet dh is my biggest enabler for my addiction to thread and fabric. He does and has done everything he can think of to make my sewing room very comfortable and easy to work in. Three weeks ago he bought me the nicest small leather chair to sit in while I'm sewing. It is so comfortable and very pretty.

17. What's a sore spot you have when it comes to sewing?
People who don't sew assuming I will sew whatever they ask for at their whim.

18. Post a picture of something you are proud of sewing, or describe it and tell us why you are proud:
My duvet cover and pillow shams for our master bedroom. It was a big project and I really didn't have a pattern but knew in my head what I wanted.

19. Give your sewing philosophy in two or three sentences:
Sewing is very good therapy. It is cheaper than a psychologist or psychiatrist.

20. Name something else you are good at:

1. How long have you been seriously sewing?
Seriously? I'm not sure what that means but I've had something going on for about 25 years and off and on before that.

2. When did you first learn to sew and how many years ago was that?
I first learned to sew in junior high school, I guess. That was about 127 years ago.

3. What is the last "trick" you mastered?
Hmmmm.... Well, I got a pretty good match on the plaid-like pattern in the coat I'm making. About half the matches were just luck, but it looks good.

4. What technique do you wish you could master?
I never get the lining in just right so I'm hoping that works out in this coat.

5. What is the most underrated sewing technique - the step you would never skip? Finishing all seams and raw edges.

6. What is the most overrated sewing technique - the step you usually DO skip? I don't always make all the markings.

7. What can other sewers do that you can't do?
Quilt. I could never stand there bent over pinning it together before quilting. I can handle place mats, pillow tops and such but my back could never stand a large quilt.

8. What is your favorite thing to sew (end product)?
Jackets I guess.

9. What do you dislike sewing?
mending

10. What fabric(s) do you love to sew on?
I like natural fabrics. I love most silks. Rayon is nice and linen -- especially blends. Wool in nice to work with but makes me itch to wear.

Sheers that wiggle around a lot.

12. Who makes your favorite patterns?
NO particular favorites.

13. If you had a sewing lackey, what three duties would he / she perform for you?
cut stuff out.

14. Post a picture of the last project you sewed (or a description, if you can't find a picture):
The last thing I made was a plain pair of light blue pants and not worth getting the camera out for.

15. Nicest thing someone has said you you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee):
"Where do you shop?" Not realizing I never buy clothes.

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
My husband by staying out of my sewing room.

17. What's a sore spot you have when it comes to sewing?
When people say things like "I've never sewn before but I want to start designing, making and selling clothes so I don't have to get a real job." They don't realize how much there is to learn about this thing we do.

18. Post a picture of something you are proud of sewing, or describe it and tell us why you are proud:
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e212/DorothyLong/girlieskirt013.jpg
let's go with the girly skirt.

19. Give your sewing philosophy in two or three sentences:
I don't have a philosophy. This is how I relax so I try not to take it seriously.

20. Name something else you are good at:
Both my girls turned out good so I guess I was a pretty good mother. And I'm a pretty good reporter when I want to be.

21. What do you wish someone would sew for YOU?
I guess I would appreciate just about anything.

22. Name something the S-W-N folks might not know about you:

1. This year.

2. I made my first pillow on my grandmother's treadle machine, and she tried (in vain) to teach me more. I started learning in earnest after she passed (1o yrs ago), bcause she had left a few decades of unfinished projects (and unbelievable amounts of books/magazines)behind. 'Course, I wouldn't touch her projects until I had learned to do things properly.

3. Mitered corners (on a quilt). May have been a fluke though...

4. Measure twice, cut once!

5. Measure twice, cut once!!

6. Reading the directions all the way through. If I did that, I'd be too overwhelmed to start anything.

7. Clothing.

8. Quilts. I'm learning how to make slipcovers though--oooh, 3-D!!

9. Stupid patches on my husband's stupid Navy clothing. I resent having to do it (always at the last minute) and invariably wind up stabbing myself. (that's 3 stpuid things!)

10. Good quilting fabric. The kind I feel guilty buying due to cost ($9/yd or more), but the colors and the feel..mmm!

11. Velvet. Gums up the machine.

12. No favorites.

13. The dishes. What, it's not sewing related? Dishes keep me from sewing as much as I would like...

14. Made a fall quilt, using fusible webbing and batik fabrics, on a tan background.

15. "WOW, where can I get one of those?"

16. My husband- He doesn't say anything about the bits of fabric strewn through the house.

17. People don't understand the lenght of time it takes to do something properly.

18. I saw something in a magazine ( a log cabin, but with a complicated color pattern) and said, "I wish I could do that." DH glanced at it and said, 'you can do it' (and went back to his TV program). Turns out, I COULD do it!!

19. Just do it. My creations always look better to other people than they do to me.

20. I am a phenomenal dancer. (But not, as you can see, a good speller!)

21. New curtains. Hate the ones we have, but cant get DH to agree on new color/style.

22. I have changed my password 4-5 different times because I can never remember it.

1. How long have you been seriously sewing?
Seriously since I was a teenager. 7th grade around 1968 or so. So many clothes and not enough of a social life to wear them around to.

2. When did you first learn to sew and how many years ago was that?
came from a long line of "sewers" on both sides of the family. Born with pins in the mouth. I remember my first garment was for the 4H Club; a full-gathered blue ginham skirt on a waistband with zipper in the 4th grade. (And the squares matched up - the start of my plaid OCD)

3. What is the last "trick" you mastered?
slowing down and focusing on the issue at hand. not jumping into fast forward (yes, this is a trick)

4. What technique do you wish you could master?
hand applique

5. What is the most underrated sewing technique - the step you would never skip?
can't think of one just now - but I agreed with most of what everyone else said.

6. What is the most overrated sewing technique - the step you usually DO skip?
I agree here too - basting. But, there is a lot of stuff I skip over, due to knowing short cuts or just thinking I don't need to go there, like - actually reading the pattern instructions. Sometimes I do need to go there!

7. What can other sewers do that you can't do?
who knows? I don't hand quilt. Others do. I do home decor. Others don't.

8. What is your favorite thing to sew (end product)?
costumes of any sort.

9. What do you dislike sewing?
?? don't know.

10. What fabric(s) do you love to sew on?
most fabrics

11. What fabric(s) do you hate to sew on?
fabrics that shed
12. Who makes your favorite patterns?
no favorite

13. If you had a sewing lackey, what three duties would he / she perform for you?
1. cutting
2. clean up after every project
3. handle any and all interruptions while I'm sewing
(isn't that when the phone rings most often, kids
want to talk, the dog wants to play, etc.)

14. Post a picture of the last project you sewed (or a description, if you can't find a picture):
just a 20" square silk embrodiered pillow with self piping for the stash challenge (see stash thread later in week for pics), this was the ground breaker for the London blinds and the duvet cover I've put off making for months.

15. Nicest thing someone has said you you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee):
I've had a lot of compliments over the years. Any affirmation is nice.

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
of course, my husband, who at this time in our age enables and supports my addiction (and knows an intervention may kill me), and my 15 yr daughter (who doesn't sew), she understands every trip out may include a "quick" (yea, right, quick - wink, wink) sewing stop and bites her tongue (tho she has been know to stage an intervention).

17. What's a sore spot you have when it comes to sewing?
no real sore spots.

18. Post a picture of something you are proud of sewing, or describe it and tell us why you are proud:
The formal evening gown I made for myself for my son's wedding last year. Went into just about every cloth store in Atlanta and finally, after months, found what I wanted at the local Hancock's (I'm sure this is where I started the search). Everything fell into place and I paid a total of $36 for the whole dress. 50% coupons are from heaven. Another would be the blue plaid roman shades that came together too easily and actually hung perfectly well! (boy, was that a shock and a blessing)

19. Give your sewing philosophy in two or three sentences:
"don't sweat the small stuff" would be one. " If you start to stress, then stop" is another.

20. Name something else you are good at:
I'm told I've got a green thumb. I love playing in the dirt.

21. What do you wish someone would sew for YOU?
I love hand made quilts.

22. Name something the S-W-N folks might not know about you:
What I crave - is to be around other women (friends oe potential friends) who enjoy sewing as much as I do. And, I think I finally met one.

1. How long have you been seriously sewing? About 6 months - I dabbled now and again but a neighbour recently cleared out her sewing cupboard (imagine giving up sewing) and gave all her stash to me - the freedom to make bits without stressing about making a mistake really started me off.

2. When did you first learn to sew and how many years ago was that? Still learning.

3. What is the last "trick" you mastered? Not good enough at anything to say mastered. Getting better at a lot of basics though.

4. What technique do you wish you could master? Buttonholes (I've tried a few) and zippers - that would give me a lot more choices in pattern.

5. What is the most underrated sewing technique - the step you would never skip? Pressing as you go.

6. What is the most overrated sewing technique - the step you usually DO skip? Basting

7. What can other sewers do that you can't do? Almost everything

8. What is your favorite thing to sew (end product)?
Clothes for my daughter (8 yo) - she loves them so much - she has just made her first dress from a pattern I made - nobody believed she made it herself.
9. What do you dislike sewing?
Mending

10. What fabric(s) do you love to sew on?
Stretch and cotton
11. What fabric(s) do you hate to sew on?
Velvet and satin
12. Who makes your favorite patterns? Kwik Sew - they have the best instructions for a beginner - I can understand every step (and I've not yet found any errors in them)

13. If you had a sewing lackey, what three duties would he / she perform for you? Setting up my sewing things (I don't have a sewing room) and putting them away again when I'm finished

14. Post a picture of the last project you sewed (or a description, if you can't find a picture): I made a panelled skirt for myself but not wanting to try a zipper for the first time I added an extra panel and made a waistband out of ribbing - I could have gathered it but my waistline doesn't need the extra bulk - it came out looking really good - I'll probably make a couple more.

15. Nicest thing someone has said you you regarding your sewing (that you can remember, hee hee): Where did you buy that?

16. Who supports your craft the most, and how?
My daughter - she loves being able to pick out fabrics and patterns for her new clothes
17. What's a sore spot you have when it comes to sewing? Machine maintenance - my bobbin tension seems to go out fairly often and the shop I got it from won't help - they insist it needs a service every time - luckily I've just been told by a friend how to adjust it (and my husband does all the other cleaning and oiling etc.)

18. Post a picture of something you are proud of sewing, or describe it and tell us why you are proud:

I'm either proud of things I make or I toss them out - there doesn't seem to be an in-between. Unless its nighties or pyjamas.

19. Give your sewing philosophy in two or three sentences: Only sew things you enjoy making (now I have only to live up to it)

20. Name something else you are good at:
My job - I work for Weight Watchers and help people to lose weight. I guess I'm good at it just because I love it so much - and the members can tell.
21. What do you wish someone would sew for YOU?
A quilt - I'm just not good enough to try one yet - I don't think I have enough time either.
22. Name something the S-W-N folks might not know about you: Probably almost everything - I'm new to the forum - I'm married, have 2 kids (11 yo son and 8 yo daughter), 3 cats and some fish. My son has a form of autism called Aspergers Syndrom and Attention Deficit Disorder. I work part time for WW, my husband is in I.T. (so obviously my computer spends a lot of time offline) and I live in Australia. I love sewing (but you all knew that).
