Ok ladies, we have done this before.

Let's get our room cleared. We have tons of stuff to sew for holidays and gifts. Before we start, let's get our little place cleaned up. First of all, clean off your main surfaces.

If you have UFO's, put them aside, unless they have to be done for the upcoming gift season. Clear off all the fabrics, notions and mess. If they have to be done for this year, make a list of what has to be done first.

Bag the UFO's, in a clear bag labelled what it is and for who. Put all your scissors, stitch rippers, etc. in their proper place. Put all the pattern pieces in their proper envelope and sweep the floor.

Now, does it look more inviting? Let me know, we have a lot to do.

Mary.
Sounds like a good plan. I've put it off long enough.

I have a confession to make.....the sewing room is so messed up that I moved the machines to the kitchen table.....ok but it gets even worse

I have been feeding the family in the "NO FOOD OR DRINKS" living room so I could get my sewing done.

Brian is going to work in a few min. I think I'll go clean up my mess.:bluewink:

Mission at hand: Get the sewing machines/fabric/notions/MOMS MESS back to their room!

Ouch Mary......take off the spike heels when you give us a good kick......

Since we're cleaning those rooms......how about moving the ironing board away from the sewing machine..........forcing us to get up from the machine (working those thighs) and getting in a few steps!!!
Just a small measure to help during our feasting/food ritual season :bolt:

You must have been reading my mind. Since closing my daycare, I've moved my machines into what used to be the daycare playroom. Now, I have to sort and bring everything into the new space and organize it. What was the sewing room is now stacked high with boxes. This house has been for sale for quite a while and I'm packing with hopes that it will sell soon. Packing is both an excuse for cleaning and an excuse for not cleaning; depending upon my mood at the time.

Mary,
You must have been reading my mind too. :nervous: I spent all afternoon cleaning up my sewing room. You wouldn't believe the Halloween candy wrappers and other junk I picked up from around the computer. I kept smelling something sour and couldn't figure it out. I found a half-full glass of milk behind my sewing machine that had been there 2 or 3 days! (dd has been warned not to do that again! I wouldn't let her use the computer all day.) I also found lots of dog toys all over the room. :monkey: I picked up and put away all of my Halloween fabric scraps.
Wooohooo! I can get to my machines now. I hung my thread racks on the wall to get those off of my sewing table. I've been planning to do this for weeks and something always comes up. I finally got a day to myself. I even finished pre-washing some Christmas fabrics to make some magic pillowcases. I also have everything out to make a quilted jacket for myself. I sorted through my Christmas fabrics. I think I have PLENTY from last year. I got 30+ yards on clearance after Christmas last year.
Now I need to get off the computer and get to sewing! :bolt:

Whoooo!!!! Hoooo!!! I'm ahead of you this time Ms. Mary!!! I cleaned up my sewing room after I finished stitching the last 19 fans together last night for my Grandmother's Fan Quilt and dh vacuumed for me this morning. Now I can sit and sew the bottom pieces on the fans, stitch them to the squares and I'm ready to start backing and quilting as I go on this project. Since my dh got my sewing room closet all shelved and put up the additional shelving in my sewing room it has been a lot easier to keep it neat and tidy as I go. I've been a good girl and make an effort to clean up after every project before I start a new one. How long that lasts is still to be seen.

Bama I just ran my grandkids out my room for the same reason. I have a coaster I made for my drink in my sewing room and they throw it on the floor and put the drink on my desk NOT!!! I just ran them out of here. Candy papers and trash papers they draw on also is all over my desk. Before they leave they will clean up their mess.

Mary I clean up after my projects lately but it get back as soon as I start a new one. Someone said they moved their machine to the kitchen table because there was no room in the sewing room to sew............that sounds like something I would do.

My neighbor keep coming over and giving me inspirations of things to do that she needs done for her daughter. Her daughter is a festival queen and she needs all kinds of things done for her every week. Last night at 6PM we were running to Hobby Lobby to get brocade and lace and foam board to make posters for a convertible she was riding in this morning at 10AM in a parade. She needed two, one for each side. We embroidered on the black brocade with silver thread Her title and the kings title. That was fun but going to bed for 4AM wasn't. We got both of them done and she told me this evening the way we did the signs they worked really well. Considering we didn't have the car to fit the signs on here. After that little project I earned the title "Her Royal Highness's Seamstress". LOL It came out really well I was proud of myself. :bg:
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

OK Mary...you've got me inspired! I will clean my sewing & cutting surfaces today! I will put my UFO's away until after Xmas! After the cleanup I will vacumn (can't sweep my carpet)! Now about putting things in their proper place....I guess that I don't have a "proper place" for things...I just can't seem to find them when I want. Any suggestions on storing tools, e.g. marking pencils, extra cutting blades, quilting gadgets. I have those rolling plastic storage bins, shelves with baskets, drawers in my sewing table, etc. Any logical organization ideas so that I don't have to dig all over the place for things?

Okay Sherri, now I have that song stuck in my head. :bluewink:

I got 2 pillowcases done, cut out several more, and got part of my jacket ready to quilt. I spent over an hour last night just looking through things I had forgotten I had. :re: I have so many UFOs!
My dog is loving the clean room too. I cleaned off the day bed that was covered with boxes of STUFF. Now she's made herself at home on it and has been watching my every move. Of course the dog toys are back in here now in a neat little pile on the bed. She went to the back door and whined. I thought she wanted out but she wanted me to let the cat inside. Now they're both on the bed. At least they're not as messy in here as the kids are.

Judy, I put a small basket on my sewing table to hold scissors and rotary cutters. I use a small jar to hold pencils and marking pens. I got tired of looking through storage drawers whenever I needed them. My rulers, mats, templates, and quilting/embrodiery hoops hang on the wall.

Judy my dh mounted a 1/2 sheet of white peg board on the wall above my sewing tables and I have all of my rulers, cutters, scissors hang right in front of me when I'm sewing. I also keep my marking pencils, pens, pattern markers, hem guages, etc. in a glass jar type of thing. I have a small pressing mat on the left side of my machine and an 18 x 12" cutting mat on the right side. My iron board is one that hangs over the door to the closet in my sewing room. DH also built shelves floor to ceiling on each end of my closet and shelves in the middle so that all of my garment sewing fabric is finally out of plastic bins and neatly stored in the closet. He put up a set of the wire cubicle shelves along one wall of my sr for the quilting fabrics beside the bookcase that holds all of my books, magazines, etc. I have no excuse now for not keeping this room neat and organized. I'm also like Bama I hate having to dig through drawers and bins for things I want.

I like stuff where I can see it if I need it. My scissors and rotary cutters are hanging up over my sewing machines. I put extra blades and s.m. needles in see thru baggies. Then I poke a hole in them and hang them up too. I also have my measuring tapes and rulers on a shelf over my machines along with a pencil case full of all sorts of markers.

Hey I must be reading minds!! I haven't been on in a few days [busy sewing for Christmas] and had just finished cleaning my sewing room and sat down to read the post and I find this. Mary really must have been seeing my room. DH built me some shelfing in the closet and now my stash is all in there nice and neat. Floors clean, tables clean and ready to start again tomorrow. Life is great!! Hope I can keep it this way. Judy

I rearranged my sewing room before school started & stored a lot of my seasonal stash under my bed in space bags & plastic boxes. I have found it a lot easier to keep the room clean now that I can move in there. I am guilty of not vacumning as often as I should but I did that last night to clean up all the rice DD spilled when she filled rice packs for me. All of my UFO's are things I am working on for a craft show so they stay out so I remember to finish them before starting a new project.
I am almost done with these then I will start on Christmas.
My biggest problem is I share the space with DH office desk. When the next kid moves out that is changing.

I haven't had time to really mess up my sewing room yet. But Patty said this;
Since we're cleaning those rooms......how about moving the ironing board away from the sewing machine..........forcing us to get up from the machine (working those thighs) and getting in a few steps!!!

and sometimes she just ticks me off!!

I'll move that table before she comes over. In fact I'll put the bow-flex there instead!

OMGosh!!! I just re-arranged my sewing room. By re-arranging, I just moved one pile of something to another empty spot and then another pile of something to another empty spot until I finally can see the floor!!! It has taken me the better part of a week to do this!! My problem is we are remodeling our house and we are down to the last two rooms. Our master bath and our dining room. In the process, we have moved my china cabinet out of my dining room, moved my table and chairs to my mom's house and acquired her china cabinet and a banquet table that seats 12! The table and some of the chairs are in my dining room (along with 12 boxes of hardwood flooring, 2 bathroom exhaust fans, a microwave/range hood (that was removed and is going to my MIL's house), A BATHTUB!!, boxes of ceramic tile and tools, tools and more tools). So I have my sewing tables, chest of drawers (that I store sewing supplies in and a tv and tivo on top of), two china cabinets, a cutting table, exercise bike and elliptical trainer all stuffed in my sewing room. Don't even go near the closets!!! I'll be glad when we are done with the remodel so I can re-claim my sewing room and quit shifting stuff around!

Breezy...I can relate except that I'm not renovating! Yesterday I went into that sewing room and instead of following Mary's directions (sorry Mary  ) I decided to organize my shelves before cleaning off the surfaces!!! Silly me....now there is more stuff on the surfaces and the shelves are still not organized!!! So I'll be back at it today.

Patsy, I've been thinking about a peg board but haven't done it yet. Bama I'm trying your suggestion of the baskets and that may work until I get a peg board.

Thanks for the suggestions and I'll get back at it today since I'm off work!!! Yeahhhhhhh!

Hi Everyone!

I am so lucky to have a lovely space. When ds moved out 3 years ago I took over his room. It's 10x12 (I think) and wonderful.

Just like everyone else, no matter how much room you have it's loaded to the gills with junk.

I've kept it under control by cleaning between each project. I put everything in it's place, I vacuum, dust, etc. I also clean my machine and change the needle unless it was a simple project.

I have a clear, large sized shoe bag hanging from one of the closet doors. It's got 24 spaces and holds so much stuff. I love it!

In the middle of cleaning everything right now. I'll be starting my next project within the hour.

Thanks for the hints. Lennie :bg:

I use one of those nail/screw drawer organizer things you can get at hardware stores....let me see if I can find a picture...

It fits a decent amount of "stuff" and is nice for the small tools/notions. Not sure if this is what you're in need of but thought I'd mention it anyway :)

I have a small one bedroom apartment and so my kitchen/living room is ALSO my sewing room! I have VERY limited storage as well so I do my best, but it never seems to get as clean as it should be....I'll do a quick tidying up when I just can't stand the clutter anymore!

I also just started using a hanging shoe holder to hold a lot of my fabric. Seems to be working quite well :)

So much for a neat and clean sewing room. For some reason when I use my embroidery machine, I make a terrible mess with stabilizer and thread. Went shopping for all the components for an Advent Calendar today on my lunch break and again this evening after I got home and now my sewing room is back to it's usual stack here and a stack there look. Oh well, at least I look like I'm being productive. :nah: However, I could show you a picture that I took on Monday of my neat and tidy office at work.

Since we have the kids with us, I have NO storage. Cleaning up the sewing room mostly means getting the kids to clean up after their extremely messy ferret! We have one that just tosses his food out of the cage. I have to keep stuff covered and put away due to nosy cats. The siamese walked over to the serger and wnt chomp on the thread. Now serger and coverstitch machine stay covered when not in use, and anything that little paws can bat on the floor gets put away so I can find it.

Oh, Dorothy, you know it! No flat, soft space is safe from the furballs! I couldn't survive without the sticky rollers.

The newest kitty was quite fascinated with the sewing machine's needle going up and down. He would lay directly behind the machine and watch. The first time he stuck out his paw to "catch" the needle was the time I shut him out of the room. Luckily his interest isn't focused on the machine anymore.

I sew in a corner of my bedroom and I manage to keep it clean all the time....I can't focus in clutter. However, I cut in my garage now and lately I've been online shopping happy. The boxes are arriving faster than I thought. Now I have online orders in boxes and fabric store purchases in bags just heaped up out there. Everytime I think about putting stuff away I get tired. Unfortunately out of sight is meaning out of mind right now . My goal for today is to get things put away and find space for the fabric I bought but don't really need :nervous:.

I have a mesh letter tray under my SewSteady tables at my machine and overlock. It is where I store all the needed items for that machine (needles, snippers, seam ripper, etc). I use a fold out sewing box (http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL388/2170133/9904999/204873579.jpg) to store extra blades, markers, etc. I keep what I am using in a pencil cup. I have yet to start quilting but I have amassed quite a variety of templates and quilting notions. I keep them all together in a plastic storage tub. I like the kind with the see-tru sides so I don't forget what's inside. Here's a picture of my mesh letter trays (http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL388/2170133/9523848/187010619.jpg). Please excuse the writing, it's on the picture itself.

That was just after we had decorated.... it has a few more things in it now. Not too much though I have been on an anti clutter kick for a month and it is finally seeming to make a difference.

Love the colors Jan! :)

I began sewing in my kitchen which is the biggest room in the house and the one with the most light. My mom borrowed me her Brother embroidery machine but said I would have to move it out of the kitchen. So, now my sewing room is the living room which is okay. I get to watch tv now when I sew!

Organizing? Well, I guess I go one project at a time and keep the others in clear plastic containers or in piles in the office area. I am childless right now so no worries about that. My mess is only mine! Although Hubby is the only one around to blame and he is always working! Darn!

Maybe after I finish the indian costume and embroider a shirt after church tonight I can get it cleaned up..
IT looks like tornado alley!

Okay so i FINALLY did it....better late than never.
And to show you how hard I worked.....(it was BAD)..
Here it is.....4 hours later.

I forgot to take a pic INSIDE my closet....its hollow in there. My dad built me 3 long shelves and I have baskets all the way across with notions, sharp stuff and etc. in each basket so I can find my stuff when Im looking for it...oh.. and it's all labeled.
I also have a table in there with my 300E on it. It fits perfect anda bakers rack with my fleece and bulky fabric on it.

Anyway here are some pics...I wish I would have taken some before pictures....think tornado. lol

(see my boys in the chair? They passed out during the clean up...)

Thanks for the inspiration to get it organized....it needed it...BAD.

Oh I forgot this one....this is what I did with my rulers and things that I use oftern....just hang them on the wall behind the door and out of my way until I need them.

Great job on your sewing room ....very tidy indeed. I am jealous of your move around room. I was wondering - where do you cut out your patterns?

Thanks! Literally it took me over 4 hours.
I dont use patters much but when I do, I cut my patterns, or fabric in general on the table in my closet. (fairly big table in there with 2 stools under it that i can pull out to sit on) theres a good light in there so I can see well too.

Well I have taken some of the tips rec'd and it is almost clean. I have my cutters in long thin organizers. I have another Rubbermaid drawer organizer that I have put all my pens, pencils and markers. I have taken the seasonal fabrics off my closet shelves and put them in stacking boxes in my spare bedroom closet. I have organized the fabrics that I am collecting to make a quilt together so that I am ready and won't use them for something else. All the other fabrics are stacked in the closet by colour except for the large prints. I have all of those stacked in one pile. The UFO's are put in bags or boxes. Now all that's left is to start to sew...

I finally had to break down and clean up. I've been making my 150 duffel bags for our Homeless ministry at church and that was a HUGE pile of stuff in my sewing room, dining room, living room and front entry. I finally got the room cleaned up yesterday and now have only 60 bags to sew the top drawstring seam on and they are done, fini, complete, out of here!! But I can't find some things I was working on before the bags. I know I put a bunch of projects away, but now they are so well hidden I can't remember where they are.

Today, before I spend a lovely afternoon sewing, I am going to clean the other side of the room -- does that count?
It's the side I work in and my desk is cluttered, mostly with books and magazines about sewing.

Wow Stef,
You sewing room looks great. I was just happy everything was off of the floor in mine. :bg:
After sewing a little last week, my room needs a little straightening up again so I can sew today.

It looks wonderful, Stef! What do you do when you need a large area for cutting and/or pinning?

I couldn't figure out if it was one huge cat or two. Cats are the absolute best at making themselves comfortable. I've got 4 boys myself (along with 3 dogs too). My cats don't snuggle together though, they just tolerate!

Let's see how long your beautiful room stays that way. Let's hope it doesn't because that would mean you're not having fun!

Where do I cut??
Well...Depends on how big of a thing I'm cutting. I have a fairly good size table in the closet that i cut on and sometimes I use the kitchen table if its BIG stuff...like pinning a quilt and etc and sometimes too...my hopechest.. I use that as a table somtimes. I have a big ol rotary mat that covers it and a stool that goes with my sewing table thats a perfect height to cut smaller things (quilt blocks, sundresses for my niece. IT also doubles for storage...it holds all my bolts and batting.

Ive really been looking for a nice sized table to put in my sewing room....but I havent really found one that I just love thats a good height for me. (im short..)- and too...theres finding a place for it and reorganizing my sewing room. WHich Im in no hurry to do..because we just moved and Im tired of unpacking/reorganizing. LOL
That and Until about a month ago, my sewing room was my bedroom..in a teny tiny 2 bdrm townhouse. We've moved into a 3 bdrm house and now DH and I both have our own hobby rooms. SO this having a sewing room and finding tables and etc are very new- hence no BIG BIG table. Which I want....but for now, my closet table, hopechest, and kitchen table will work. It beats a cutting mat on my bed, which what I had been using. LOL

Oh and thats two cats....they are best buds. One hated the other when I brought him home but they are inseperatable now.

Ive been sewing for the past 9 hours with a friend of mine (gotta love Saturdays..)and Im soooo glad that its clean. Ive been cleaning up after myself too....so that helps

ANyone else get thiers cleaned?

Thanks Magot!

I want to inquire about the mad money pinned to your bulletin board ...

Yes Jan I have signed up!! I have 5 days off next week for Thanksgiving. Other than Thursday I have no plans except Christmas decorating & sewing! I have made a plan that for every piece of fabric I buy I have to use 2.
Since our WalMart has less selection right now I am not buying as much. But I did buy 2 yds. yesterday of Veggie tales for DS(18) christmas present.

Is that one of the newer Singer professional heavy duty sewing machines in your sewing room? If so, how do you like it?

Miss Tara, It is! I love it. I got it at Sam's club last year on clearance for $89. I had to go online to get a manual but that was only $5. I haven't had any trouble with it. It runs great. For anyone with room I recommend a desk like mine. It is an executive desk from a State of Michigan surplus auction. I paid $1 for it. I used to have a double desk (drawers on both sides & twice as wide) but when I moved upstairs to a smaller room (kids became teens) I had to downsize. It is great for cutting & a great sewing surface for large items.
