This is a quilt (in progress) that I have been working on for my husband. If you advance to the next few photos you will see the signature block detail and then the c 1900 utility quilt that I used as my inspiration for my alternating block to the baseballs.

My husband wrote the players 15 (almost 16) years ago and suddenly I decided it was time to do something with all his letters. The quilt does have two new 30's reproductions ( the red and the blue) but the rest of the plaids are old Roberta Hortons and salesman samples from 12 years ago (? around then).

I'm going to do a border and I still have more signatures to incorporate.

We'll see.....it's been a fun project though.

Barb.......if you make one for your DGS, check out this site:
http://www.hgtv.com/hgtv/cr_quilting_instructions/article/0,1789,HGTV_3302_4302936,00.html

It gives instructions on making a six minute circle, which is what I used for the baseballs. Unbelieveably easy and so much neater and rounder than appliqueing the circles. When I was watching this episode I kept thinking to myself "that will never work," but was I WRONG!

Mornings I don't go into work I ride the stationary bike for 45 minutes and I have to time it when there is a quilting show on tv or else I would be bored out of my skull.

Steph, No, I didn't make it in EQ. Just kind of winged it together. I did find this helpful though......cut your background fabric (black) a bit larger so that you can square it off to the correct size when you're done. I cut 6 1/2 squares and then cut them to 6" (5 1/2" unfinished) The balls (circles) were 4" and I have a fiskar paper cutter for my freezer paper which helped with making smooth circles.

Judy......The woman who devised this technique had a beautiful leaf quilt and my mind began to think of all the different patterns one could use with this quick method.

I have EQ5 and rec'd an email stating I can upgrade to EQ6 before Nov. 22 at a certain price. Problem is that EQ6 only works on Windows XP and I don't have that. So I have to decide is it worth it to upgrade the OS just to get the latest & greatest in EQ. Still thinking on that.

Great quilt Patty! I'm sure your hubby will treasure it!

Thanks for the link too. I have a grandson who loves balls-doesn't matter what kind as long as he can throw it or kick it he's happy. Will have to give this technique a try

I like it yes. I bought it to design my own quilts, but since I was taking 2 BOMs and other classes last year, I never had time to actually do the quilts. But I used to draw the blocks that I had to make for the BOM and use it to select my colours to make up the block and I did use it to design the layout for my Advent quilt. If I had Windows XP, I would definitely upgrade to 6.0 but am still thinking on it. Have a few more days to decide.

I finished the quilt for my husband in time for our 32nd anniversary tomorrow; just put the last stitches in the binding. I'm giving the quilt to him as a present as he bought me an ott floor lamp for quilting. :) He collected all the signatures so he deserves the quilt!
