I am about ready to start another project and I have a question about thread. I could not find thread that matched the color of my fabric so should I go with a shade of thread that is lighter or darker than the fabric? The color of my fabric is a tan color. Thanks!! |

Don't know if I remember this right, but I believe if you want to see the stitching choose a shade lighter than the fabric. If you don't then choose a shade darker than the fabric. If I've got it wrong, someone please correct me. TTFN from

You are correct. Darker hides and lighter shows. |

It depends on the shade. Threads sew in lighter than they show on the spool that is why you would more than likely want to go a little darker.

Do you still unwind the thread in the store and lay it on the fabric to find a good match ?? A clerk in the fabric shop looked at me like I was Crazy the other day when I did that ?? But, I told her that was the only way to get a perfect match... She was quite young, and I guess no one had ever shown her that ..

Libby thats how we always check it when helping someone find thread. I don't know of any other way to check it.

Never mind them, come to Halifax!!! Our local Fabricville is the only place to buy any sort of garment fabric. I bought interfacing that was on sale. I reminded the clerk, she said "oh, is this interfacing?" A very nice young girl that has never sewed a stitch. MaryW

Have you tried the invisible thread? It comes light and dark. I find it difficult to work with and only use as a last resort but sometimes have to use it when I can't get a good match with anything else. I also use it for sewing on patches. |

The newer invisible thread is so much easier to use than the old stuff we had. It doesn't tangle and twist like the old stuff and is more limber. If you are using an older spool, you might try some of the new monofiliment stuff.
