Hi all! SIL asked me about helping her to make robes for the children. It's been so long, but I have an 8-10 McCall's children's pattern (12 years old or so). She says the boys are size 3 and size 5 right now. I haven't asked her to measure them yet. Are the sizes equivalent or not (like ladie's)? From a turkey-stuffed Auntie, Thanks!

I don't sew a lot of McCall's patterns but what I sew for my kids is almost always the same # size as what I buy RTW. I sew mostly Simplicy and Kwik Sew.

I agree, the sizes are similar as RTW ((for children at least!). The good thing is if the robe is a bit too big you can roll the sleeves.

Yes, RTW and pattern sizing matches up roughly for kids. You are golden since you are making robes which don't need to fit perfectly.

FWIW, I have a worksheet you can use to give your SIL or anyone else with kids you may sew for. The parent takes these measurements and returns them to you and you can sew ANYTHING in the absence of the actual child (but remember to get updates as kids grow fast!). Email me if you'd like a copy. I am kelly AT hogaboom DOT org.

Thanks for the responses! Glad to hear it's going to be so easy. Taking blackie up on the worksheet. Now, to find some terrycloth...

I printed out the size chart measurments from a JC Penny catolog. I look at the RTW size measurments then compare them to the pattern measurment. It helps me out.

Be careful with toddler sizes. I've found that many patterns (McCall's and Simplicity, anyway) run bigger than RTW. My son is 3 and wears a 2T or 3T off the rack, but I've made him clothes from patterns in sizes 1/2 and 1 that are too big all over (too long in the limbs, too wide in the body). For kids in sizes lower than a 5, I'd highly recommend getting body measurements and matching up your pattern accordingly.
