How do I measure it to make sure it has even distance from the selvage. The shape of the grainline looks like this \. Thanks for the help. |

Hi, and welcome to the boards! I've never "measured" my pattern piece when the grain line was \. I just put it on the straight of grain and kind of eyeball it. Haven't had any problems doing that but I would think you could just measure in from the selvage and make sure the line is equal all the way up-your pattern piece will be crooked (I can't spell squood-I KNOW that's not right! LOL). Any way, the line should be straight on the straight of grain and the pattern piece will be crooked. Just measure from selvage to the line in a few places. Hope that helps, Maybe someone else will come along later with a better explanation or ask me if you don't understand what I wrote-I can see it, I just can't explain it very well. Lyn

Just like when the grain line runs up and down -- each end of the line (the arrow) should be the same distance from the selvage. I think that is what Lyn said. Dorothy |

Hey Dorothy, I think that's what I said too but I was tired last night and wasn't sure what I was writing by the end of it .LOL

Yep..that's pretty much it. You need to be aware of how the first piece is laid on the bias because you don't want to lay the other large piece(s) in a different direction/angle. Be sure and follow the instructions. When laying any pattern, I put a pin in one end of the arrow, measure from the PIN to the selvage, then measure from the selvage to the other end of the arrow and pin down. Then, check your measurments. pam

Pam, That is one instruction that has not changed since 1949 when I took Home Ec and learned to sew.. That was the way our Teacher taught us to lay out our pattern pieces. (always pin the grainline arrow first, and then go from there) Sew With Love

The other thing I learned in Home Ec was - if the bias looks like / at the selvage or fold, open fabric out and pull on both biases down the length of the fabric to see if it will straighted. I do this from time to time and maybe it helps but usually not. What seems to happen is that the fabric is softer. This all usually occurs when I have bought either cheap fabric or printed fabric. Other times I notice /'s is on some weaves notably gabardines.

Good tip Pam! that's a new one for me, and what a smart idea!!! I've been wasting a lot of time trying to get my patterns on the grain, and I could have done it so much faster your way! Do I feel stupid - oh yeah!

I really hate to admit it, but I was just holding the pattern down at one end with my hand, measuring the distance, then going to the other end, measuring, adjusting, which of course adjusted the other measurement, so then I'd have to go back and remeasure, adjust and then go to the other end and remeasure, etc etc etc. See how long it took and do I feel stupid or what!

Well then I guess that is one more thing I learned from Mrs. Wilson (my high school home ec teacher) because I always pin one end then measure and pin the other. Dorothy |
