Have made myself a couple of skirts and love the pattern. I'm thinking of doing another in some crinkle cotton I've had for quite a while. I'm not sure - should I press the seams before I sew them - just in case I end up with a wobbly looking seam. I don't want to distort the shape of the fabric though. The pattern is a panelled skirts so there are several vertical seams. Maybe I'd be better off doing a tiered skirt with mainly horizontal seams with this type of fabric. Has anybody done much with crinkle cotton and can help? Thanks. Pauline

If you press before you sew you will have problems later when you wash it. Just go ahead and sew it -- take it easy and slow. Take a couple practice runs on scrap but I think you will be surprised how easy it is to work with. I made a dress once with a crinkle fabric and pressed it before I cut. It turned out great and I wore it out but I had to press it every time before I wore it or it fit too tight. I know you aren't that dumb -- but I was. Dorothy |

groans...Dorothy enjoys crinkle cotton more than I do! Granted, I wasn't terribly experienced when I had my run in with the stuff, but... Anyway, I find verticle seams to be much much easier to manage than horizontal ones with this, and the reason is that the presser foot seems to squash out some of the crinkles and widen the fabric. I think a simple skirt is going to work out much better for you though--I was doing pants, and I did not want to have the curved crotch seam distorted. If you find the crinkles running away from the presser foot, you can cover the seam allowance with simple tissue paper and tear it away gently afterward. I found the less I handled it, the better it behaved. And if it did stretch out of shape, the way to go was to spray it with water and let it lay flat or hang vertically to dry, so that the crinkles could snap back into shape. I agree w/ Dorothy, too, about the iron--Stay away from it, and you'll never need to press the finished garment either. Andrea

Since I have a Pfaff and it is built in I sometimes forget this but I expect the walking foot helped a lot with this. Dorothy |

Very helpful suggestions here, like spray with water, and let dry, and minimal to no pressing, and keep the garment that way, only washing after, but never ironing. I adore crinkle, and, like some of you, thought I should pre-iron, before cutting. But, no. I find that a small zigzag works well, and gentle handling, as I sew. Even the vertical seams can work very well. You can try some finger pressing, or very gentle, with iron tip, at seams only, I simply hate ironing clothes in general, and crinkle has such a lovely feel!!!!!!! Sandra Betzina has some tips on textured fabrics, these could help. Experiment with some scraps. Experiment with thread types, you don't want an overly tight look/feel. Peasant skirt, or long skirt with gores are both great ideas. Someone had good suggestions re:vertical and horizontal seams. Happy sewing. |

I've been busy with other things and have put this project on the back burner until after Christmas. I'm sure that never happens to any of you though. LOL. Thanks for all your suggestions. I'll have to set myself up with one of those photo sites so I can show off some of my stuff. Thanks again. Pauline
