For some strange reason, none of the stores in my area seem to carry seam binding anymore. My local Joann Fabrics store does not carry this item any longer and walmart has never sold it. I am making knit shirts that call for seam binding and I wanted to know if there is something else that I could use in its place? Thanks!!

Where is the seam binding to be applied to the shirt? Decoration or part of the constructions?

it is part of the construction. it will be used in the shoulder seam as a stay.

You can just cut a piece of washed cotton and use that-cut to size and width you need and sew on to stabilize. I've done that before and it's worked out well.

There is also a form of soft synthetic net type knit on a roll that is used for binding seams. It is used to stabalize shoulders. And to ease in shoulder caps. You sometimes see it in better RTW knits as it has some flexibility. It comes in several widths and neutral colours. I love the stuff! If I don't have anything else I use gros grain tape, but that is almost harder to find than seam binding.

Seam bindings were a must-have back when there were no sergers. Now they are hard to come by. My grandmother had a closet full of every color of seam binding out there, in big factory-sized spools. To stabilize a loose or flimsy shoulder seam, in a knit or a weave, I agree with the above--Use a strip of whatever you have and apply it the same way as you would use bias binding. You would choose the weight of the fabric according the the weight of the fashion fabric. Certainly you will get less bulk if you use something lightweight. I like organza. You could even buy a spool of organza ribbon in a comparable color, going for a width of about half to 1 inch, depending on you seam allowance depth. The advantage there is that the edges of the ribbon are bound, so you would not need to fold it under.

I use that very narrow ribbon that comes in a thousand colors and the spools are always 2 or 3 or 4 for a dollar.. My knit tee pattern called for twill tape, but it only comes in black and white, so I went to the ribbon.. (for stabilizing shoulder seams) I make so many tees that I use a lot of the ribbon, bur it works great.. and Sometimes I use the selvedges that I have cut from quilt fabric or other wovens.. (that gets thrown away , otherwise)

thanks ladies so much for the advice. I have a ton of ribbon around here so I will use that when my seam binding runs out :-)

Twill tape (white & black) not seen if serged over, and clear elastic. I've seen these 2 mentioned in a lot of books.
I use twill tape.
