What size needle do you generally use for embroidery? I have a Sulky book and in every project, it seems the choice for needle is 90/14. When would you use 90/14 and when would you use 75/11?

Depends on the fabric, the design and your machine.
If the fabric is denim, with a dense design. Denim needle.
If the fabric is knit, with a sparse design, 75/11.
Embroidering cotton for quilts, 90/14 OR denim, depending.
Metalic needles for metallic thread.

Thanks! Very concise and perfectly clear. How easy can it be? I really don't know why I make things so hard sometimes:smile:

Kath, do you use 'embroidery' needles, like the ones labeled 'embroidery' or do you use universal needles? I can only find 80/12 embroidery needles and started using regular universals in the other sizes cause I couldn't get them locally. I was just wondering what other people used?

I use embroidery needles...
Schmetz has all sizes. (and can usually be found anywhere. Here in the states, Wally World, JoAnn's, Hancocks, Hobby Lobby, Michaels.)

I never use a universal needle for embroidery. Most all the time I use sharps. I occasionally use ball for some knits but more often than not I use sharps for knits too. I prefer to use the small needles, size 12 or 11. I do have an assortment of Titanium 14's that I use some.

The needles that are called Universal are neither ball nor sharp. They are supposed to be general purpose so that it is not necessary to change needles but in fact they don't do either job well because when you need a sharp, you just need a sharp...same with a ball point...making one in-between just doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

My machine likes Organ needles for embroidery. I've been told that the organ needles are made so that if you have a problem they shatter and are not so likely to bend and damage the machine. They are a little longer than Schmentz and the scarf is much different. They are not recommended as sewing needles in the Bernina because of the length and scarf difference. I use the Schmentz needles for metalics however.

For metallic thread I know you use the metalic needle, slow the speed of the machine down. But it still breaks. Someone suggested using SewAll on the thread. They said run a line of it down the thread. Is this a good thing to do? Any other suggestions?

Try and lower your tension just a bit. I use Sewer's Aid on my thread and a little on my needle. I have also found if you use Sewers Aid on you needle when using sticky back stabilizer or spray adhisive it won't gum up as much.

Sewers Aid is sold at JoAnns in the quilters isle.

I hope that helps!

I have a multiple thread holder for my machine. I put the METALLIC thread in the spindle farthest away and then run the thread through the loop that is closest to the machine. If I didn't have that, I would use a thread stand or a glass placed to the right and back about a foot or so from the machine. Most thread breaks that I have seen with metalic come from the thread twisting and the distance from the needle helps to relax the thread.
