My sister is expecting her second baby in Feb. and I wanted to make her a bunch of interchangable outfits. What company would you recomend as the best ft for a newborn? For those of you with ottobre how small does the infant clothing go? I want to try ottobre so bad. Im looking right now for one that has patterns that all my kids would enjoy. My son is 10 feet tall and super skinny so RTW jeans look aweful on him. I need to practice on making him pants so that when school starts back after christmas break he has a decent pair of jeans. Thanks so much Spring |

Hi Spring, congrats on the new niece or nephew! I have discovered that the sizes all tend to vary with the pattern companies, even within the same company-depends more on the style than the pattern company. I do like the Kwik Sew book for infants where you can adjust the sizes. I haven't tried the Ottobre patterns yet. www.sewbaby.com has some cute patterns as well as baby fabric. Maybe someone else who has a little more experience in this matter will come along. I've gotten to the point where I just make what I like from the pattern company and either go with loose styles so it doesn't matter much or make up a muslin of a pattern before I make it out of good fabric to see what the sizing looks like.

My only suggestion is SewBaby also. They have patterns, fabrics, and notions. SewBeautiful is for heirloom etc. It all depends on practical vs. keep it always and forever. VenusElaine "Always put as much effort into your marriage as you do into your wedding."

Thanks! I love sewbaby. I tried a onsie pattern from McCalls. I dont remember the number but the sizing was way off. I made my daughter a onsie when she was 6 months old and Im still waiting for her to grow into it...lol She is now 2.5 years old. I think I might try the new one that kwik sew has out for sewing for babys. Im thinking more along the lines of pants, onsies, jacket and maybe a couple cute dresses. I was going to make the crib set for her but I think they wanted to pick a new one out. They dont have a washer so they cant have enough clothes....lol Thanks again for all your imput Spring We just found out the baby is a girl! |

If you are making practical things. May I make a suggestions? When sewing pants make a cuff that can be let down or folded. That way you get more use out of them. |

I haven't tried the Kwik Sew baby book but have all the others. They are great. And the sizes actually come fairly close to RTW. Here in OZ anyway. I wish now I'd been into sewing when mine were little. So many more outfits for so little fabric. I guess I could try Barbie outfits. Pauline

I've been making lots of stuff for grandbabies. The Kwik Sew and Burda are the best, Ottobre is excellent, and if you decide on it, you can buy just one issue at a time and you can look in the issue online to see what patterns are in it. (on the ottobre site), I find Mccalls, Butterick, and Simplicity larger sizing. Laura

McCall's & Simplicity now have some cute XXS patterns. I am going to get some to make outfits for my twin Granddaughters due in June. I have found that most newborn patterns don't fit until 6 months.

Deb I've made 2 using the directions from www.slingmemommy.com. I made the first one to make it easier for my daughter to nurse the baby when we're running errands, but we use other times as well. The second stays at my house for when I'm trying to multi-task and have the babies here. cshortsew
