Hi, I have recently joined this list to get information on sergers. I have been sewing forever or it seems that way, and have never used a serger. I am saving up to buy one and welcome any opinions or advice. I cannot afford one of the high end sergers and am not sure I need one. I need to do basic serging. I have a couple of questions to begin:

what is the advantage of a 5 thread serger?
do most sergers do a coverstitch -- is that the same as a flatlock?

Not sure I haev the terminology correct.

Thanks in advance.

Deb --
Sounds like me about a year-and-a-half ago.
My advice is not to go too cheap. I started with one of the cheap ones at the fabric store and ended up getting rid of it after 6 months.
And, whatever you do, go to a dealer that will give you support and training. Don't leave the shop until you know how to thread the darn thing!! I saved some money by buying one that was used to train dealers.
I like my cover stitch although I don't use knits much.

Hi Deb and welcome. Glad you're joining us. I'll reserve my comments about sergers for your post on the Sergers forum as this is an Introduce Yourself only forum.
