Hi, I have recently joined this list to get information on sergers. I have been sewing forever or it seems that way, and have never used a serger. I am saving up to buy one and welcome any opinions or advice. I cannot afford one of the high end sergers and am not sure I need one. I need to do basic serging. I have a couple of questions to begin: what is the advantage of a 5 thread serger? do most sergers do a coverstitch -- is that the same as a flatlock? Not sure I haev the terminology correct. Thanks in advance. Deb |

Deb -- Sounds like me about a year-and-a-half ago. My advice is not to go too cheap. I started with one of the cheap ones at the fabric store and ended up getting rid of it after 6 months. And, whatever you do, go to a dealer that will give you support and training. Don't leave the shop until you know how to thread the darn thing!! I saved some money by buying one that was used to train dealers. I like my cover stitch although I don't use knits much. Dorothy |
