I started a lap quilt for my SIL for Christmas, did the 9 block squares just find, then attempted these ' star' blocks. The pattern was wierd (maybe it was just me) cause it was triangles with the corners cut off. So I thought I'd be smart and just make the triangles with no cut corners. I sewed and sewed and made all my little strips to sew to the big middle block (I think its an Ohio star) and the strips were all 1/2 " too short, So I re measured, recut and resewed, tried again and same stupid thing. By now I'm really frustrated as I'm running out of fabric. So I decided to go for all 9 block squares, but they look stupid side by side, so, now insert a border, which went great. Until I went to do the long border between the rows, picked up my fabric to cut the long rows and I had two pieces, I'd cut it down the middle on the fold somehow. And there was not enough left. I had bought this fabric in another town and now I was beginning to panic. I went to our local store and surprise, it was there and 1/2 price. So I worked all afternoon, and its all done, quilted and just needs the binding on, which I will do tomorrow after work, then post a picture. It's not at all what I had envisioned, but I'm still quite happy with it.

Some projects are just like that - but I am sure your SIL will love the quilt because you have made it specially for her.
Looking forward to seeing the photos:up:

Heres the quilt, finally got the binding done, but have been fighting with my embroiderymachine for 2 nights trying to get the label made. I'm ready to throw it out (the machine). Stupid hateful thing.

Laura, the quilt turned out really well. Your SIL should love it.

This may not have turned out what you have envisioned, but you have shown that you are a problem solver and the kind of person that doesn't give up.

Your strips not being the right size after you measured reminds me of a quilt I was making my husband. Kept measuring twice and cutting once and still the border strip wasn't right. I finally took the measuring tape I was using to measure my quilt and compared it against the ruler I was using to cut my fabric. Voila....there was my problem as they were "off" by about 5/8". I went through all my fabric by the time the "voila" serendipitious moment occured.

Back to your quilt though as it is a wonderful present!

Bridesmom the quilt is beautiful. Good job. Now, what's wrong with your embroidery machine? Stop, take a deep breath, walk away from the machine and say to yourself -- "it's only a machine". LOL

Careful Patsy. I saw a movie (and I think it was a true story) where machines took over the world and were enslaving people and stuff. Don't want to make them mad by saying "it's only a machine"

Oh sorry Tom!!! I forget that they can hear us and probably is why they make ugly thread nests, suck the fabric down into the bobbin area, break threads, needles, etc., just so they feel they are in control..... I know we have to bee really nice to our machines and give them exactly what they like. Speaking of which, I've discovered quite by accident that my CE 100 likes 40 weight 100% cotton thread in her bobbin rather than the polyester bobbin thread that I have been using for embroidery projects.

Great job on the quilt! Love your colour choices.
Glad the store had more material but if they didn't I'm sure you would have come up with something else.

ooohhh, now I know why my machine is not happy with me, I yelled at it a few times and called it some very unladylike names. (see machine embroidery' forum). I've never been so upset with a machine before, it brought me to tears fighting with it. Now I will just leave it alone until after Christmas and hopefully be able to get it to work so I can get my label done before they get here Dec 28. Thanks for the encouragement. She is from California, and I wanted to do the red/white/blue theme for her. The blue and reds have small stars in them. I'm really enjoying the quilting, even with the cutting struggles, just makes me realize you really have to pay attention to the directions!
