I purchased Celebration of American Life: Applique Patterns Honoring a Nation and its People by Barb Adams and Alma Allen and gave it to myself.

Started working on the blocks...
http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album1/ALblock6.html

and they go together quite quickly because of the large pieces. Check it out sometime when you're in the quilt shop or online.

I'm doing mine all in scraps. The background is a tiny floral with a fine vertical line running throughout.

Just thought I'd share ....

And BTW........only two more spots are left for the Red, White and You block exchange! Sign-up ends at the end of the month. Don't worry ladies, I can move on to other projects as I finished all my blocks for the swap and they ready and waiting for your quilts!

Yes Lennie, you've got to take up quilting! It is a very relaxing activity.

Hey Judy........that would be okay with me. I'll just drink a big cup 'o coffee and sew away. It wouldn't be the first time  as I did help out a friend in a friendship block exchange. That's what friends do when life happens.

Great block Patty! Love the colors. I'll send my fabric along with Judy's, maybe you could do both our blocks? LOL Have the week after Christmas off so hoping to get my blocks done then or at least started.

Lyn....you send those blocks along to me then......I would understand fully that you are occupied giving that little grandbaby lots of kisses and hugs.

Libby....thanks for the compliments. I just like to have fun.....and with all the kids home right now it keeps me from biting my tongue off. I'm 1/2 finished hand quilting the baseball quilt and I want to give it to my husband for Valentine's Day.

I'm almost finished with Block 7 (the next block in the American Life book) and it is an eagle holding a flag. I originally bought the book because of this block and I still think I am going to put this eagle on all four corners of an ocean wave quilt that I am making in red/white/blue. Then, I might do a vine trailing around the outside with flags and flowers in the swags. I'm just going to play around with this.

Caught a few stitches Judy between visiting MIL, making a big family dinner and trying to keep the dog from drinking all the Christmas tree water.

I did this while watching portions of President Ford's funeral on TV.

If you advance to the next picture you will see a less fuzzy picture in detail.

Did another block in this series and finally I have the camera working (as it was before the kids played with it). If you advance to the next picture there is a detail.

You really are cracking on with this Patty - are you hand stitching the applique? I was trying to see what colour thread you used for the different fabric but could see no stitching at all!

Your work is beautiful. I like your fabric choices. How do you plan to quilt it? Hand or machine and what pattern? I can never decide on the quilting pattern. Thanks again for sharing the pics. They are great. Gena

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album3/ALBlock1.html

I just finished my sixth block....have six more to go ....however I am going to use the eagle block in the center of my scrap ocean waves quilt that I am working on for my son....

http://pelkovitch.photosite.com/Album3/OceanWaveEagle.html

I'm not sure if I am going to hand quilt or machine quilt the quilt. I keep thinking to myself if I get the machine with the BSR...maybe I would machine quilt it.....however, I'm pretty quick at hand quilting.....so I'm not sure.

Jan, I use silk thread for the applique. I have three spools (black/medium/cream) that I use for all the colors. I do frequent garage sales picking up silk thread whenever I can get it but the three colors suffice for all colored fabrics really well. As far as not seeing the stitches....well, that is because silk thread tends to "melt" into the fabric whereas other threads tend to stick out on the surface.

I've been on another thread on a different forum and several women are working on the quilt now which makes it fun.

Although I do applique, I never really thought of it as my "thing." Just enjoy making all kinds of quilts.
