I know this is the section for embroidery machines but since my question is kind of related I hope it is ok to ask here.
Sometime ago there where so many shows on free motion machine emprodery. Now it seams impossible to find any information or instructions. Not even Nancy Zieman has anything. She used to make these beautiful ribbon and specialty yarn flowers. Does anyone know of any sources for free motion machine embroidery?
I have to buy a new serger first so a emproidery machine has to wait.

Thank you
Chris

The principle is simple, just drop the feed dogs and go..whether it is free hand stippling, couching or embroidery. There are a lot of people who are quite good at it and can make some pretty remarkable things. The thing is that it takes a degree of skill. I've seen several demos but have not personally tried it...I'm not that kind of creative. I would expect there to be some books on it but it you can't find those and can find instruction or books on free hand quilting/stippling you could probably apply the same principles.

There are a few books that I know of but there really isn't much to tell. Drop the feed dogs, use a free-motion embroidery foot and then just move the fabric slowly to fill in. The faster you have the machine running the more control you will have. Start with straight stitch to get the feel of it. Then go to zig zag and try to write your name. The slower you move the fabric the better it will fill in. When you feel comfortable with that draw or trace a simple design on the fabric. (I like to use a flower). Change thread colors for the different parts. On large areas you might use the widest zig zag while on others you might want to narrow it down some. It will help considerably if you have the fabric in a hoop or use the new free motion fabric grabber that looks like a hoop but is really just the top half and has handles.
Have fun or don't do it, Tom

This site used to have a lot of info about free motion embroidery. They articles are written by Marilynn. She has written a book about it and sells them herself. Perhaps you can contact her for more info. Here is the link to the articles:

Since Mary has revamped the site, I don't think she has had the opportunity to move all of the articles from the previous site over to the new one. If I can't find something on the site, I 'google it', and it usually shows up.
Take care,
Donna

Thank you very much for all the tips. It does not sound too difficult at all. I was worried about tention, top-and bobbin tread and wether you can sew over your previous stiching. Looks like it all a matter of getting used to it. Would you recommend to practice with regular thread? I have a bunch of years old thread which I don't want to use in regular sewing anymore. Guess it would be ok even it doesn't look the same as embroidery thread.

Thank you all again
Chris

I forgot to mention that the PBS station in my area was showing a three-part series of Sewing with Nancy showing some simple ribbon embroidery techniques. This is the book and DVD that goes with the show.
