Mom was cleaning out Dad's closet (he recently passed away) and was going to send his flannel shirts to Goodwill. Had the bright idea that maybe I could make a simple (key word here, girls, is simple!) quilt. Remember that I am a beginner machine quilter and would like to finish this quilt(s) in this century....

Any suggestions for a pattern..(free would be great but will fork out the $$ if necessary)...

Thanks, Paula

Paula......

This will really be a nice project. Remember that working with flannel is a little different than working with quilting cotton; being there aren't as many threads per inch and therefore a bit more loose. Therefore, it is best if you choose a pattern that does not small intricate pieces requiring precision piecing or seams with multiple seams intersecting (making the seam lumpy with the thickness of the flannel).

I am not sure how many shirts you have, but if you bought some flannel (in a color you really love) as sashing to unify the quilt, you could do a nine-patch out of the different shirts and it would look spectacular!

Oh, and this could work really well with lots of little pieces....

but, I would buy a few more pieces of flannel besides the background in order to give the quilt a little more zip.
