I've wanted to start one for years now and I'm planning to start mine on Jan. 1st this year. You add a strip of fabric for each day of the year. Some days I might write a thought or birthday on a special date, somedays I'll just add a fabric print for that day. I'm using the guidelines found here: http://www.quiltershome.com/freepats.htm Click on the calendar quilt links Pat Sloan designed it. She used to visit us here on the boards a while back. |

Bama.....what a great idea, and certainly a project that isn't burdening on anyone's time. I like the idea of using a piece of fabric to reflect your mood for the day Mine would all have to be coffee colored! Another great way to use up any fabric scraps in your sewing room too.......a way to document everything you made for the year.

I love it!! Thank you so much for sharing this! I book marked it! This is a terrific idea. That way you can look back on the quilt and basically remember everything that went on. That would be something cool to do while you are pregnant and end up with a baby quilt that your child could pass on. Just lots of possibilities with that project! Thanks again!

I like the idea of a block per month that was on the link for the calendar directions. I have a lot of books and wanted to try all the different blocks but don't have time for all the quilts. Maybe I'll try the block per month for a whole year and see how that works. Wish me luck...I'm currently hand quilting a king size quilt for my son's wedding in August...think I'll have time for a block a month? |

Did anyone start their calendar quilt today? I had muslin from a bolt I had purchased and cut 4 - 91 1/2 x 10 1/2" strips for foundation piecing my strips. I'm just grabbing fabric as it hits the floor so I don't have anything planned for specific colors for each month. Thanks again Bama for posting this great idea. Patty

Hey.......anyone still doing their calendar quilt? Everyday I diligently sew my strip on........January is going fast! Also, while I'm at it cutting the 1 1/2" strip, I have been cutting an extra few and sticking it in a container for when I need to do a log cabin or any other kind of quick project. My January has been mainly blues and light tones for snow......February will definitely be RED for me Patty

I've started one with a bit of a twist. I've challenged myself to read thru the Bible in a year, which I've attempted before and was not successful. So I cut strips from my scrap box (because I haven't done a lot of new sewing) and I write my scriptures for the week on the strips and keep them in my Bible, after I've read for the day I drop the strips in with my current project and sew the strips together once or twice a week.

Bama.....oh yes, I'm glad you're still working on yours! Did you cut muslin foundation strips and then add your 1 1/2" to the 91" long piece? This is how I did mine, and I think, if I was going to do this again, I would just sew 10 1/2" blocks at a time, and then assemble them. It is a bit awkward sewing on the strips to the long piece. However, I am noticing how much some fabric stretches in comparison to others as I am sewing the seam We still have lots of snow on the ground ...... so the only florals I have are the silk daffodils that I put on the dining room table to pretend it is spring. Right now it is snowing really heavy....... and I wonder when spring will ever come. Anyway, green this month and then floral prints and yellow for April when we start our second strip! Patty

It is a bit awkward sewing on the strips to the long piece. However, I am noticing how much some fabric stretches in comparison to others as I am sewing the seam I noticed the same thing so I decided to change my quilt up a bit. I took the months apart and now I'm going to frame each month with solid strips in a different color for each month. With the shorter months I'm going to add bigger strips at the top and bottom and then square all the month blocks to the same size. I'm going to put them together going from left to right. Four blocks on top, four in the middle, and four on the bottom row. How do you think that will look? |

After buying my fabric for the April swap...... (I love the fabric and hope others understand I was thinking about how I could incorporate it into this quilt............... Anyway, these are LONG units.... so, my outside border to the left of the first three months is going to be Winter fabric..... then a long strip of spring fabric(swap fabric)....... summer and fall with winter on the outside right border.... I was thinking it might look really cool............. I'm going to use my April swap fabric as my spring and I think you'll see why when you see it.......... These 91 1/2" strips are buggers to sew under the machine................ I can't wait to see a picture of yours when it is done Lori! Patty

I think it would be fun if you started one on your birthday and continued til the next birthday. I wish I had started mine last year when I turned 40. I read about a diary quilt that's made like that. It was a small square for each day and you write on the squares or put a special print for each day. Would be cute for a baby's first year too. |

Patty, How's your calendar quilt coming along? I caught up a few days on mine today and cut more strips. I'll try to post a picture when I get the blocks squared up. Lori, it is funny you asked about the quilt...... The other day I was down in my sewing room and my daughter came down to join me (she was bored and needed my attention to commiserate on her life)....ahem....... she went for the calendar quilt and asked to see it. I pulled it out and in April I was doing yellow and all these beautiful bright shades and then the VT shootings happened. I put a black strip for the day. My daughter insisted that we need to get caught up on it as she thought it was "cool" .... so I am going to get back at it. Technically the quilt is 1/2 finished. Yikes....... I can't wait to see what yours is looking like. Patty

Patty, Yesterday as I was working on my blocks, I noticed a strip in April that looks out of place. Most of the April fabrics are florals, rabbits, eggs, pastels, etc. This particular strip is black with seed packets on it. From a distance it just looks dark. I think I'll copy you and move it to April 16th, if you don't mind me borrowing your idea. |

Okay you two experts on these calendar quilts. As you put your strips together did you write on any of them? A date? A thought? Or are they just in the order of each day of the month and certain strips were especially meaningful on certain days like for April 16. I just find this so intriguing for a quilt

I'm using pigma pens to write in family member's birthdays and ages. Example: Cody is 14 today. I don't write the date. People will have to count strips to figure out the date. I'm also writing in Anniversaries. I wrote in the day that DH's 100yo aunt died. I write small so you can't even see it looking at the blocks from across the room. Most days I just add a print that strikes me to represent that day. I'm saving a lovely tomato print for the day we pick our first tomatoes from the garden this year. And a corn print too. Of course I'll have to write in the day we get Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows (since I'm taking dd to the book store at midnight) and the day we see the next movie. Things like that that I want to remember or want my kids to remember. I'm still debating if I should write the name of each month on the first strip in each block. I probably won't. This is a lot of fun. I think I'll start a new calendar quilt each year from now on. Just change up the arrangement each year. It would be something neat to pass on to my kids and grandkids. I can't believe I'm already on June now and haven't used the same fabric twice. Oh, except for cupcake print I used on a couple of birthdays. |

Bama...I like how you have given information on the strip. Harry Potter book arrival is a big one in our family too! I have subtle fabrics that are more of a reminder to me than observers; for example the day we say the move Pan's Labyrinth I put a fabric that reminded me of the movie, or when we drove Katy back to school I have fabric with the alphabet, when Katy went to see Nik there was the Statue of Liberty or a sign of 54th street.... I did write that Phil didn't see his shadow on February second and we ended up have blizzards till April - Phil needs a replacement (kind of like the queen needing to pass the throne over to someone younger). I like that Patty. I might start writing more thoughts like that on some days since I actually have more time to work on it now. Some of my prints for certain days will make sense to others (hearts on Valentine's day, purple and gold for Fat Tuesday), some just for me, and some are just random. I just realized I didn't write in my son's graduation! What kind of mother am I? I guess I was too stressed out worrying if he made it to think about my quilt blocks then. |

Wow...you gals certainly are creative. I probably wouldn't have thought of all those things but it is a neat way to make the quilt. I only have niece's and nephew's etc and since I don't live close wouldn't be able to make one that would have enough personal memories for them. Ummm...you have given me ideas that I can pass on to my sister, sister-in-law and one of my nieces since they are beginner quilters. It would make a great quilt for their families. Since their stashes wouldn't allow for no repeats...it would be possible to use 7 different fabrics per month and repeat the sequence each week. Then you could tell the weeks as you go in your strips...or always use the same strips for Sat and Sun so that you have the weekends identified. Gosh...now you've got me coming up with ideas. Judy, I think anything could go with these quilts. I like the idea of having the same day of the week identified. One of the tutorials showed strips that had a crazy quilt effect because they were pieced together from little nubbins of fabric. I think a new mother who was expecting could make quite a neat quilt. Bama, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sxfcSguy-TE You have to have your son and daughter watch this video. It is way neat and I think your son will especially like it since he is into music and your daughter will like it because it is so creative Let me know. Patty

Patty, That video is really neat. My daughter said she had seen the drum one before but not the piano. She thought it was cool too. My son isn't around right now. Maybe I should email it to him. Isn't that sad? Sending an email to someone who lives in the same house with me to make sure her gets to see it. I love the idea of a pregnancy quilt. The mom-to-be (or even a grandma, sister, or good friend) could write down things like the first time she felt a kick, silly cravings, dad's thoughts or comments, weight gained, etc. and make a baby quilt for the little one. Maybe a grandma could start the quilt on the day she's told about the new baby. I will keep that idea somewhere in the back of my head and hope I don't need it for many more years. |

I think a new mother who was expecting could make quite a neat quilt. I agree...I wish I lived closer to my family to be able to do one to reflect their lives. My niece just had a preemie a couple of weeks ago...3 lbs 5 oz via ceasarian. He just came home from the hospital Friday at 4 lbs. I think it would have been great to have done one of these quilts during the year for her. It would have had quite the diary of events for his birth, etc. I looked back at the site to refresh my memory about the calendar quilt and saw that the strips were all crazy/wonky which is not really my thing. In my mind I'd use strips of equal size and have either 4 long strips of 3 months or vice versa with a sashing between the strips or maybe even 1 month across with 12 strips down and sashing in between. Judy, You could still start a quilt for the baby. And it would be a good way to keep in touch with family that lives far away. I'm sure they would treasure it. All of my strips are 1 1/2" wide, except for a few that I make just a little wider so all the blocks turn out the same size. (different amount of days in months) There's so many ways you could make a calendar quilt. Patty, You never know. We do both have the quilt gene. |
