I've tried embroidering on dog collars in the past and have not been too thrilled with the results. My own 3 dogs are wearing the collars but it's just not the quality I've seen in shops. Granted, I don't have a commercial machine.

The stitches seem to go too far into the webbing. I have two very big dogs and their collars are VERY heavy duty webbing. The smaller dog's collar with a med. webbing turned out much better.

I used a very large needle, titanium, bold font, and then basted the collar onto heavy duty stabilizer. I tried a topper, Clear and Melt, but that didn't seem to help much either.

Any suggestions??? or is a home machine just not up to this task???

thanks, Lennie

Good question! Unfortunately I don't have an answer, but am eager to find out what others say.

Did you try quilting thread in the top and bobbin ???
(it might be better for the heavy duty embroidery you want to do...)
I'd also use a denim or top stitch needle.
I'd hoop it alone and make sure it was R E A L L Y tight.
The new washaway mesh's might help, rather than the clear/melts...(they iron on...) or just hoop it with the collar.

Ooooo, thanks, Chrys! Good suggestions. I'll give it a try tomorrow. I happen to have quilting thread and also topstitching and denim needles. By "alone" I assume you mean no stabilizer??

I'll let you know. Thanks, Lennie

Tried your suggestions, Chrys, with hopes high.

I quickly found out that having the quilting thread as the top AND bobbin was too much bulk. I put in regular cotton bobbin thread and got better results but I still had problems with the bobbin thread breaking and bunching up into a mess.

I tried different fonts (to reduce density), used a denim needle but I'm still getting the impression that it's just too much for the machine............

I'd welcome any other suggestions.

I donno...It really could be too much for your machine..

I have a Husqvarna Viking #1+. It's got the rep as a workhorse but it's a model that came out 10 years ago or so.

I'll keep on tryin'........:re:

Lennie,

Have you tried loosening your top tension? Have no idea if that would work or not but it can't hurt. Also if you are determined to have embroidery on the thick collars and nothing else works why not try embroidering on fabric and then sewing it to the collar.

Gina, I'll try the lesser tension on top. Luckily I have old leashes and collars to play around with. I have also thought of attaching embroidered fabric to the collar but it's just not the same.

The reason I'm trying so hard here is that the groomer that I sew for is convinced that if I get this technique down she and I could make a killing personalizing collars. I'm beginning to think it's probably not worth it.

Oh well, can't win them all. I continue to try now and then.

Thanks, Lennie

I know that this is stereo typing but..... I think that most of your larger dog people aren't the ones that you are gonna make a killing off of anyway. Seems to me that the toy dogs are the market for all the designer/personalized stuff. Also to practice on if you run out of old leashes, you can buy the webbing at hardware and camping stores, I have seen it on the spools like the way you can buy chain and rope.

Didn't think of the collar, but I did embroider our dog's name on a coat I made for her. Turned out pretty good for my first effort. I found out after the first one to put her name on the top piece of fabric before sewing it together because of the thickness in the hoop. Made my SIL 2 for her Dobies for Christmas. She was thrilled.

Keep us posted if you get it to work. I would love to know how.

OK Lennie you can call me crazy but why not just make the whole collar from scratch? I was looking at my dear Drooliette's collar when it hit me that it is two layers of webbing. So if you made them from scratch you could do the embroidery before you sewed the two layers together. That would also take care of seeing the back side of your stitches on the inside of the collar. Oh I am sew inspired! I am going to try this myself.

the problem I ran into with trying to make your own, is trying to sew through the two layers of webbing... not as easy as you might think...

HMMM! That could be a problem for you Lennie. I know my trusty old Pfaff 2040 can sew through two layers of webbing.

I am gonna try it as soon as I get my red and white blocks done.

I have a Husqvarana viking platinum. I bought webbing at the facric store in a coordinating color and embroidered the name on the webbing in the same color as the original collar. I then sewed the webbing onto the collar. I slowed down the speed and used a titanium needle and had no real problem. I have done the same thing to horse halters for our horses, so I am sewing thru some "heavy" stuff.

Gina! I apologize. I don't know how but I've missed these last posts by you. Can't imagine how but I'm glad I saw them now. What great ideas!

I've got to get busy now but I'll check them out. I like the idea of using two layers. Haven't noticed that collars can be like that. Then I could even glue the layers together with silicone or something???

Thanks and really sorry I didn't acknowledge your ideas before this. :nc:

I would love to do this on horse halters and goat collars. You said you bought webbing. What exactly is the webbing? I just bought my Husqu-Viking a couple weeks ago and not sure how to do the embroidery but am learning.

Hi Fran,

The webbing I got was just from the fabric store but it's not nearly as thick as the animal collar webbing. Any fabric store or WalMart should carry it. It's good for practicing your placement, etc. since it's not very expensive. I would think it would be fine for your goats if it's just for identification and not for leading them. Then you'd need something stronger.

Webbing is like straps you might find on tote bags. It comes in different widths and in nylon or all cotton and all different colors. It's woven.

As for heavier webbing, Gina suggested hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowe's. I've yet to try that for the more standard collar type webbing.

Sorry, dflatt and Fran. I didn't mean to jump in like that. I didn't realize, Fran, that you were asking dflatt.

Just read too fast.

No need to apologize. Thanks for the answer. I have a large roll of black webbing we got at flea market for next to nothing. I used it to make straps for goat coats. I am so new at the embroidering that I have sooooo many questions.
