I thought I would post some pictures that I took tonight of the Christmas Lights that I get to see during the Christmas season in Ottawa. Thought some of you other :Canada:ians might like to look at what I see every year.

Christmas Lights (http://flickr.com/photos/heyjudee/sets/72157594460028938/detail/)

Believe it or not, this is the first time that I have actually taken pictures. All the lights will be turned off this Sunday.

Judy your pics were much nicer than mine!! We took the kids up the peace tower to see the lights from above, the view was amazing! My daughter loved the snowflakes projected onto the parliment buildings!

I've been up the Peace Tower but only in the daytime. Never thought they had it open at nighttime. I'll look into that next year. I loved the projection of the snowflakes too. I took that picture last week when I took my sister to Parl. Hill to see the lights. All the pics I took then except that one were blurred because I couldn't hold the camera still enough for the extra exposure req'd on the nighttime setting. That one was taken by me leaning back on the wall of a building, bracing the camera on my chest and holding my breath! :whacky:

So today I bought a mini-tripod at Blacks and it worked great. I'm sure people were looking at me a little strangely though. I was taking the pictures while setting the tripod on the top of the fences, garbage containers, light posts...basically anything that would allow me to hold the camera steady.

 Beautiful pics. The slick city streets made it more so.

You're lucky to be in such a beautiful old city.

Thanks for sharing these pictures. I have been in Ottawa all seasons but only been on parliament hill in the summer and spring. One day we spontaneously found a balloon festival. I got some great pictures and have them mounted on ? and use them in my rather large bathroom as a theme.

Oh yes...the balloon festival is always Labour Day weekend in Gatineau. I've been a couple of times in the morning and evenings when they are taking off. But now I sit on my deck and look to the skies. Depending on the winds they sometimes go over my house. I've always got my camera ready. A

nd on July 1st, I sit out at noon and wait for the Snowbirds to fly over. I'm guaranteed to have them zooming by while they wait to do the fly by on the Hill.

I agree...I'm lucky to live in this city!

They must leave the lights on the trees all year round - otherwise can you imagine the time it takes to get them on and off. Very pretty in your part of the world but I have to admit my preconceptions led me to believe it would be snowy.

No, Jan...the lights are put up and taken down each year. They start putting them up in November and they'll take them down after Sunday. The lights are not turned on until two weeks before Christmas. This year all the lights are the new energy saving LED lights that were donated by Home Depot. Don't know if this happened other years or if it was just started this year, but the lights are turned on at dark and are turned off at 1:30 a.m.

Now as to your preconception of snow...in any other year you would be right! See New Years 2006 (http://flickr.com/photos/heyjudee/347138066/in/set-72157594460028938/)

But this year El Nino is causing us to have extremely warm weather in Eastern Canada. We've only had snow 2 or 3 times...very little shoveling  Yesterday & today, it was + 9° C. What miniscule piles there were are totally gone now. :re:

Just to show you how different Canada is. Here is a picture of us at Christmas.

See theres that snow you were expecting. We have 130 cm approximately on the ground.

I love the pictures of the capital

Hey Shari...normally we have about a third of that...but here are the snow banks that I had to contend with on Christmas Day 2006 (http://flickr.com/photos/heyjudee/347280933/) :dave:
