Can anyone tell me how to applique lycra piecies onto lycra. I am making schronized swim costumes for my daughter and want to add flames to the suit with holographic lycra. I have sewed many dance costumes but this is new to me. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks

I have - and it did raise some curious questions. I just used a stabilizer under the lycra but unfortunately I can't recall which kind. I tend to favor the water solvable type and would have used the type that is like paper vs the type that is like plastic as I don't think the plastic type was available at the time. As the lycra was very heavy I don't recall using a hoop but think if I was to do it again, I would. You have given me an idea as I happen to have some rather plain sew suit fabric and a fair number of scraps! :re:

Thanks for the ideas. I did play with iron on to fuse the two pieces of lycra together and that helped some. Did you use the stabalizer behind the piece and against the machine? I wondered if it would help it feed better. With the iron on I got some rippling but as I did not stretch it while sewing, I think it will dissapear when the girls wear them.

I put stars on lycra skating outfits buy using an adhesive(no-more-pins) then using a very stretchy zigzag around the edges. Make sure the stretch of the applique and the outfit are going in the same direction.

What type of adhesive do you use? No stretching while zig zagging right?
thanks

As you can tell from my previous message it has been awhile since I made my bathing suit. I put the stablizer closest to the machine - definitely helps to feed better. It wasn't available at the time but I wonder if the temporary quilting spray stablizer would help the pieces of lycra stick together - it does not cause any stiffness. I have not used the temporary adhesive that Weezy mentions tho I have some. I suspect it works the same way as the quilt spray (and a lot cheaper). It only holds for a short period of time while you work on the fabric.
When I did my garment the pieces were quite small and in fact were different textures which helped the pieces to stay together. I have both a roller foot and a teflon foot but can't recall whether I used them - I would have used the roller foot. If I were you I would experiment with smaller pieces to see what works best. I think you may find it frustrating zig zagging the points of the flames with the lycra so you want to be sure of your technique or else you will really get puckering.
Good Luck

I would probably use a washout spray-on today. Since lycra doesn't ravel, I used a fairly wide open zig-zag, and you don't notice a slightly off zig-zag from a distance. They had to be sewn on as until you are actually on the ice when a precision team is, you have no idea how fast these kids are going. If they catch anything under a blade, it can be a disaster!
