I picked up a roll of forest green "gossamer" from an online prom supply company to use for decorations for my DD's birthday. I found it to be very useful and CHEAP, so I'm passing it on: Gossamer (http://www.stumpsprom.com/catalog.cfm?caid=810589) Up close, it looks exactly like lightweight nonwoven interfacing. It comes in 50 yard rolls (19" wide and other widths), for as little as $12/roll. I've been re-using this stuff all month, wrapping presents in it, making all kinds of crafts. I'd use it for interfacing, but I bought a deep color, and it's not colorfast. Might spring for some in white or beige one day... Could see using it for patternmaking or pattern tracing, probably some halloween costumes to come...oh all kinds of things.

The site doesn't give much information...fabric content, etc., which would stop me from ordering it. Seems like maybe it's just for temporary uses, except for your idea of pattern tracing or pattern making. I wonder if you've tried laundering any of it? I know you said it wasn't colorfast, but I'm thinking maybe you know that cuz you handled it with damp fingers or some similar situation. I'd love to know if the white would come out of the washer/dryer as a wrinkled mess, before ordering. Ardis |

It's the same as the lightweight semi/mostly-sheer non-woven interfacing you've seen in the fabric store, made of polyester. Since it's not a fabric shop, they're not bothering to tell you that on their website. I totally sympathize--I much prefer to buy locally and see what I'm getting. I just happened to get a party supply and find out by accident that I was in luck as a sewing enthusiast with my leftovers. As a party prop, it's drapes across ceilings, laid down an aisle like a red or white carpet, scrunched and bunched into all sorts of room dividers, etc--used to set a mood. I say it's not colorfast b/c I bought the deep green one and put it in a glass of water to see what would happen and it got murky. I'll continue to use it as a gift wrap/gift bag stuffing, party decoration, costume supply, and even as part of a Christmas craft or two, but I'll be buying white/off white when I'm ready to get it for serious sewing projects as a stabilizer or a pattern tracing medium.

Thanks for your reply, Andrea. Since you didn't answer my laundering question, I'll assume you haven't done that. I liked the idea of draping the white from the ceiling in the bedroom...a really soft pretty look, like sleeping in the clouds. But it would certainly need to be laundered regularly...chances are, polyester as you described would launder nicely. I'll post here, to let everyone know how it works, if I decide to go for it. |

...mmm...ok, but it will launder the same as that interfacing does. I haven't laundered it b/c I haven't used it for home dec. arty decorations are far more temporary and disposable. So I've just recycled it in new ways (the crafts). It certainly doesn't have a luxurious feel or appearance. For permanent home dec draping with a sheer, I'd go to gauze or organza instead, which would both launder well and would have a fine appearance on their own.

Ok, thanks for the info...I thought it would be more sheer than organza or gauze. |
