I need some advice on getting an uninterruptible power supply for my new "sewing computer", my Artista 200/730.
Anyone have a brand they really like or could recommend? It must be that my guy went down to Staples this morning with the express intent of getting me one and then completely spaced it for a reason! Maybe he would have gotten the wrong one? Anyhoo, any input from you all would be helpful. Thanks loads!

We like APC's at this house. We have them on everything (FL and it's weather, ya know..)
You can sometimes get them cheaper online...

Thanks for the brand recommendation; do I need to look for a specific voltage or wattage limit? They seem to differ widely, and there isn't much info in my manual!

Tell the computer store that it is for a very expensive computer and see what they recommend. The UPS is VERY important for these machines as they are heavily effected by brown outs. Glad to hear that you are looking for one.

If your talking about a "battrey Back-Up" there are several good ones. Just read the warranty carefully as most make it almost imposible to collect on. Make sure you keep all the necessary documentation.
If you mean a "current conditioner" like we have to use here, the Pana-max is by far the best one I have been able to find. It is also the only one recomended by Bernina, Pfaff, & Viking. (actually I think their policy statement is that "we don't recommend or not recommend any...." but it is the one they sell.

Thanks to all for the help; we ended up getting an APC from Staples, and it is a UPS box with a battery back-up. I unplug the machine from it when not in use, and hopefully, it will do okay.
Tom, I know what you mean about worthless warranties- I never count on them, but it would be interesting to see if this company, which seems to think very highly of itself, would do when asked to cough up dough for a ruined item hooked up to one of their units.
I did not see the brand you use.

The Pana-max recomended for sewing machines is pretty much only found at sewing machines dealerships. Some more expensive models are available on line but they are over-kill. APC is who I couldn't get to stand behind their warranty. Make sure you keep all your documentation on the unit and all items pluged into it. If you have a lightning strike get a weather service report to verify a lightning strike in your area. They then want you to get a service technician to write a statement stateing that the damage was done by a lightning strike. At any rate it should protect against a power surge which is more likely to happen. In reality none of them will protect against a nearby lightning strike. That lightning just jumped 6 miles across the sky... to jump 1/4 inch across a switch is nothing.

Years ago, when simple serger arrestors were pretty new (and expensive), we had over $7000 in audio/visual equipment plugged into one in our home. We had a terrible lightening storm and we were sitting on the divan waiting for the lights to go out when lightening hit our transformer. The serge arrestor lifted about 4 feet above the floor, started spinning, spilling ozone and blue sparks everywhere before dying in a blue flame on the floor near us. Everything on that circuit was saved!!! It was amazing! I don't think that anyone anywhere would expect a serge arrestor to make it through that now and I have not a clue as to the brand of that one.

:bolt: WOW - That's freaky - But you live in Tornado alley, don't you? That was SOME stupendous surge protector you had!
And to Tom: I am a "documentation nut". My guy gets bugged by my constant gathering up of his piles of papers and filing them. But when he's looking for something - well, if it's been gathered, it's been filed, and I know where it is! But APC sounds over the top. A technician having to verify the lightning strike? I guess it would be worth it for the price of the machine, but I'll just leave it unplugged unless I'm using it, and if I think it's going to storm, I won't use it. Hope that will cover me most of the time, geesh. You don't even get what you pay for anymore - this APC unit was over one hundred dollars. Oh I'd better shut up or I'll be getting up on the ole soapbox...

Yeah, we do live in TA. We've had several come close over the last few years. In 2003 when the big one hit and took out a mess of my friends scattered over about 40 miles, it came within 3 miles of us and a block of my son who was at a BS meeting. A cousin called from Chicago right after they were announcing it had hit GM and Tinker, 9 miles away and was now only 3 miles from us. I kept telling him that it was very close and I needed to get back to the cellar. He kept wanting to tell me about laying in the back yard and watching it as it hit Tinker in the 40's or 50's (before I was born).... Last year as the TV's were announcing they had missed us, one suddenly dropped out of the sky next to my FIL's house and hit his neighbors. It can get really exciting around here during tornado season, but fortunately, it usually only hits in open areas and moves on...at least it usually doesn't devastate an area like the one in 03 and the one that came back through the same area a couple of years later. In 03 I was supposed to be at a meeting in GS meeting at a church that was totally wiped out. I was on my way when I "chickened out" and returned home.

I have serge arrestors on all the appliances in the kitchen and small tv's and UPS on all the expensive TV's and electronics. Most are APC because that is readily available...just hope we'll never have to mess with the warranty. Be aware though that the UPS systems do wear out and should be replaced over time.
