Hi everyone! As a starving (well, not literally!) student, I was just wondering what tips and tricks you have for saving money on sewing supplies, using sewing to save money on clothes, etc. As for myself, I like to watch for sales at Hancock Fabrics and Joanns -- I hardly buy anything that's not on sale or bought with a 40% off coupon. I shop the clearance fabrics a lot too -- a lot of the fabric I have right now was $1-2/yd. I also like to buy remnants -- sometimes it's enough to make a purse or to use for trim. I've heard a lot about people revamping clothes they don't wear much anymore and reconstructing clothes from thrift stores, but I haven't tried it much myself. I guess I have trouble visualizing the possibilities when fabric comes in the form of a pre-existing piece of clothing! Any suggestions? http://www.sew-whats-up.com - the new home for Sew What's New

I also watch yard sales and thrift shops. You would be surprised what you find those places.

Biggest money saver: Don't buy it if you're not planning to use it today or tomorrow. The more time between purchase and plan-to-use, the more likely it will become part of the pile of things you got for almost nothing. Those piles add up. Do recycle zippers and buttons from clothes you're about to discard. Do recycle old/damaged bedsheets--I've been using this one sheet for SO many projects. It had been an interfacing, both cloth dolls this fall, the base for a bedskirt, and on... Do trace your best fitting pants instead of buying several patterns for pants that don't fit right anyway. I am definitely guilty of buying fabric/patterns/etc because it's a good deal, even though I don't plan to do the project right away. Sometimes I forget that things go on sale quite often. Although, there have been a couple of times Joann's has discontinued fabric I was planning on using before I bought it. Oh well! There's certainly no shortage of fabric around here! http://www.sew-whats-up.com - the new home for Sew What's New
