Hi everyone

I've been a member here for a while thanks to my wife. Now she has decided it is time for me to learn to sew for her. To be honest I don't know where to start. What do some of you suggest I start learning first?

Thanks so much

Fuzz......:nervous:

Hey Fuzz, welcome to Sew Whats New.

Hmmm, where to start. I think you should learn about your sewing machine first. What type do you have and have you ever sewn anything before? Post over in Beginner Sewing forum with your questions.

Hi Mary

Her sewing machine is a Kenmore with computerized features. I know absolutley nothing about the machine or sewing. Yup that means I have never even turned it on so you can see what I know about sewing. My wife wants to sign me up for sweing lessons so if i can learn something here maybe I won't have to do the lesson thing.

I'll look over in the beginner section as suggested.

Thanks, Fuzz

Hi Fuzz and welcome. Actually a beginner's class at your dealers would be a good idea-if not for sewing at least to learn your machine well. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, there is a wealth of knowledge around here!

You might also want to think about picking up a beginning sewing book. I like Sewing for Dummies-it's very basic and my dil has really enjoyed learning to sew from it-I wish she'd learn to thread her machine though, she makes my son thread it for her or me if she's here sewing with me. LOL

Hi Lyn

Thanks for your ideas. Well since I was getting this done fast enough my wife already signed me up for a sewing class next week. This woman is on a mission trust me.

I might pick up that book you suggested in the meantime.

Take care

A class is a good idea. When you're done with that you'll find a project, then come back to the boards with your questions. It is a great group here. I hope you fall in love with sewing as all of us have!

Hi Fuzz! Welcome onboard. That sewing class is a great idea. Get a good sewing book and follow the boards here - and don't hesitate to ask questions when you're stuck - and you'll soon be sewing up a storm! :bg:

Hi Fuzz. Congratulations on making the big step. I just wish I could get my hubby sewing. But I guess he does help with the colour co-ordination on my quilts, so I cant complain too much.
You will have fun learning, and great fun on the boards here.
Start with something easy, like book bags, where it is all straight lines.
Cheers, Soph.

I'm happiest when I am sewing!

Hi Fuzz,
Welcome.
My favorite beginner book is "Sew With Confidence" by Nancy Zieman. The book also has the directions for several projects to get you going.

Thanks for your e-mails everyone.

Since I was here last the Mrs picked up Sewing 101 for me to read so each night before I get to watch TV it is reading time. It is almost like being back in school and having homework.

Oh then to top it off the Mrs booked me in a sewing class last week so tonight is lesson number one. I'm trying to get out of it however she has just been ignoring me.

I'm sure I will be the only guy there so the giggles will be filling the room.

See you all again I have to go READ....................grrrrr

I think you will be the most popular person in the class!

How did it go?

Fuzz - Temom is absolutely right. I run Weight Watchers meetings and whenever a guy comes in he is treated like a king.

I try not to discriminate too much but the members fuss over them like nothing you've ever seen. I think it's the maternal instinct coming out or something. Or maybe just the novelty value of a man who looks after his health. I bet you'll have no shortage of offers to help with your homework.

P.S. If you really wanted to get out of it all you need to do is tell the lady wife about the oh-so-attractive sewer at the machine next to you and how she was so helpful.

P.P.S. Don't ditch it though - you can't yet know exactly what you'll miss if you don't keep going.

Hello everyone, my first time in here. Born in NY into the fashion industry and been chin deep in fabric ever since.
Not much to say, I design, construct and sell my work. My area of passion (although not limited to) is the bridal/evening arena and period film/theatre. I free lance contract, as well as work full time as an Alteration Manager for a large bridal chain (for the insurance, lol). Lived in Italy for a few years where I raised my children and at the moment, reside in the Southeast, USA until I decide where I need to settle for the long haul. Love to teach, consult and advise in this field. Wish we could redevelop the industry in the USA again (sigh). Anyway, look forward to interesting commentary in here and may be asking a few questions myself about the new technology in machines out there. I learned "old world couture" and would like to use the faster methods on personal projects. Have a great, blessed day. JFiore

Hi everyone

I know it has been a while since I posted so thought I would drop in and say hello.

It has been about 4 months now that he Mrs introduced me to sewing. After taking a few classes and having her look over my shoulder I am finally on my own. Well not exactly as she is always finding something for me to repair or make for her. Right now I am working on silk PJs for her then she says mine are next...............grrrrrr.

Oh well if I do as she says I get to watch sports and if not she hides the converter until I decide to sit down and sew for a hour or so.

I hope all is well with everyone here

Enjoy the summer

Hi Fuzz, welcome to the group. Years ago, my DH took some sewing classes at our local university. He wanted to learn more about my passion for sewing. To be fair to him, I took a woodworking course to understand his passion for wood. It strengthened our marriage plus gave us something interesting to discuss besides work and children. Relax and enjoy the classes. You might find it a lot of fun.
