Yo Yo's are before my time but I've always thought they were neat. After seeing Yo-Yo garland around Christmas time,I have been on a Yo-Yo frenzy! I have seen them more and more lately and I thought I would show you some ideas so that you could make something with them too! I had a lazy day yesterday making yo-yo's while I was watching TV. I ended up making a Yo-Yo Pin for my sweater jacket and stashed the rest of them in a ziplock bag until after the quilt block swap. I've seen them on scarves, purses, shirts, quilts, and anywhere else you can imagine to stick one on. They are so EASY. Here are a few pictures/ideas, and a link at the bottom to a tutorial on how to make them. My Yo-Yo sweater pins...http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v146/stephanie_annette/yo-yopin.jpg An awesome Yo-Yo Purse...http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5187324 Yo Yo Tape Measure.. I'm definatly going to make one of these. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=428957 One of my favorites....Framed Yo Yo's. I'm going to make one of these for my sewing room colors after the Red, White, and You block swap. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=5037301 Even Yo-Yo Christmas Tree ornaments...How original!http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=304612 Speaking of Christmas Tree ornaments, this is the Yo-Yo garland I was gushing about....awesome huh? http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/heather_bailey/2006/12/yoyo_garland.html A pin.. http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=551506 (http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=551506) Yo-Yo angel. I think this is really cute and you can make any kind of card to go with it. http://www.craftsayings.com/projects/small_gifts/yo_yo_angels/yoyo_teacher_pic.jpg Last but not least, here is a link to a Yo-Yo tutorail that Heather Bailey put out on her website, and how I learned as well. http://heatherbailey.typepad.com/photos/how_to_make_a_yoyo/index.html Hope you try it if you never had, they're addictive! Oh I love yo-yos! I've made a table runner, tree garland, ornaments, put them into several quilts and on some garmants, and even made some of those angels from your link. Mine were "diet angels". I put a Christmas tree made from green yo-yos on a sweatshirt once. I love the framed yo-yos. I'll have to try that. Love the measuring tape and pin too. I still have a bag full of yo-yos in here somewhere. They are a great take along project. |

I love yaya's also. In my much younger days (teenager) I made a yoyo quilt. Have always wanted to make another. I like the frame yoyo's also and will have to do that. |

I yo-yo all my scraps. I take them along to appointments or anywhere I am expecting to wait. I keep them all in a shoebox and dig through it whenever I feel something needs a little more embelishment.

I really don't remember my mom sewing much. By the time I was old enough to notice she didn't sew much. I remember her machine -- she won it at Bingo before I was born. I remember a coat dress she made me (remember those -- 1958 or so). And I remember Yo-Yos. She had a big box of them and was always making more. I don't think she ever did anything with them. They were her UFO I guess. Funny the things you remember isn't it. Dorothy |

Gina, I remember when you were put in the Hospital in Germany on bedrest before your last baby, and you made yo-yos to help pass the time while you were kept immobile on bed rest..Every time I see yo-yos I am reminded of your ordeal at that time and how you hated being away from your kids.. I made a few then, and made some little gadget from them, but I haven't made any lately.. I've been saving thread spools, and I think I'll make a yo-yo doll with some of them and some yo-yos.. I have a box of yo yo's that belonged to my hubby's great aunt. They were made, I think, back in the '20's and 30's from the look of the fabric. They are a little musty and dirty from being in storage. I would like to use them on a project or make something from them. How would wash them? They seem sturdy, no dry rot or anything. Could put them in a pillowcase and pin it shut and throw it in washer? Thats how I use to wash kids dolls and stuffed animals so nothing got damaged. Any ideas, please let me know. Thanks, Sewing Forever

Thanks for taking me back. I remember a doll made out of them at my grandmothers when I was little. They'd make a great add-on for an outfit if made into a hair bow/barrette.

A couple of years ago I saw some lovely stuff made from yoyos (they were called puff patches where I saw them) in a shop at a tourist village. It's a pioneer settlement type replica (shops, theatres, gold mines, schools, churches hotels etc. - all done in the 1880s era). You can wander around the village and see all kinds of activities performed (and do some yourself if you want) as they were back then. Right near you Soph if you're paying attention (Sovereign Hill). I got some info from them on how to do it and a couple of projects so now I have a few inspirations for all those little scraps of fabric. I'd looked at the projects and thought - one day. But my intention would have been to do something deliberately with especially purchased fabric from start to finish (can't you just see a UFO coming here). Now I can use my scraps up and feel like it's just a lengthy work in progress. Yay. Thanks everyone - now even my hoarding seems purposeful. Pauline

Have you seen the yo-yo jackets? I saw one a long time ago and loved it. The only thing is, at the time, I didn't think to take a closer look to see how they were attatched and what they were actually attatched to. Hmm, looks like it's google time...lol.
