I am making belts for bridesmaid dresses that will be tied like a tie, but at the waist. The fabric I was given is like a satin, but I am not sure what it is exactly. My questions are: #1 - Would it be best to make the belts on the bias of the fabric?... and #2 - What is the best way to keep it "tied" when it is on the girls? Any advice would be appreciated!!

For securing it, if you are going to do fittings with the bridesmaids, maybe you could tie it exactly the way they want it, and sew a little snap inside the knot?

I wouldn't cut it on the bias. They won't retain their shape if they are bias cut. I would cut them on the straight of grain and I suggest that you use a light weight interfacing so that when they are tied they won't "flop". It used to be a rather standard thing to interface half a tie (to the fold), now it isn't always done.
