UUGH! 30 degrees out but it feels like 22. Ice coming out of the sky. They closed the schools and hubby got told to stay home too, so I have a house full. I think I am gonna put them to work cleaning the house.

We have been getting the ice storms from the midwest. Yesterday morning I kept insisting to my husband that he take Route 20 into Auburn to drive my son into work. Since it was early in the morning there would be more traffic than the back road and hopefully the roads would be in better condition. The day before in Syracuse there was a 30 car pile-up and one man fell off the overpass to the road below.

Returning home from taking my son to work he saw a terrible accident caused from the ice and three young men were killed when their car lost control and crossed lanes into oncoming traffic - a large dump truck carrying salt. The men were not from this area, but from southern NY and PA area and were communting to a job in the area.

My heart is broken for the families of these young men.

While snow is not my favorite thing, ice is trecherous. Stay safe everyone, and that includes your loved ones who must travel.

Bama,

It did the same thing here. We were nice and warm and then Bam! I went into Hancock feeling just fine and when I came out I was shivering.

no ice here but record lows. my feet feel frozen! Supposed to be around freezing again tonight but at least warming up to the 60's tomorrow. It was 23 driving to work on Monday and about 32 this morning. I never run my heater at home but it's on now and has been non-stop since sometime last week.

Be careful everyone-the roads can be terribly unsafe in weather like you all are having!

Even California gets cold. It was 12 degrees two mornings ago with a high of 26. We only had an inch of snow but boy oh boy, has it been cold. We've been hovering in the 20's for the last few days and it's supposed to warm up a bit soon.

Main problem is the water pipes bursting. It's causing major damage all over the place.

Driving down to shop today I noticed that the bottle of water in my little truck was frozen solid.

This is California???

Don't feel alone ladies. It's 21 degrees here in Oklahoma City and falling rapidly down into the teens again tonight. Our streets are not snow covered, they are covered with solid ice. It's like being on a mirror and trying to turn corners, etc. Dh drove me to work this morning and picked me up this evening. I think I'm brave enough to drive my Explorer in the morning, but we'll see. :nervous: I'm a real chicken when it comes to driving on slick roads.

38 today....lovely...hope it kills all the mosquito's...
Husband's flight was cancelled this morning (4am) to Dallas...ice storms in TX. (as usual in Jan.) We're also having fog. (hope it doesn't get down too low, then we'll have ice fog and here where people can't drive in the rain, I'd hate to think what they'd do in the ice fog..)(and yes I know about ice fog, having lived in CO).
Anyway I like the cool/cold weather...( I don't wear a coat and it makes EVERYONE, even strange men, yell at me, "lady aren't you cold?"...uh no...I think I'm smart enough to wear a coat if I'm cold...duh...)

Lyn--just talked to my mother in law in Tucson and she said it was unseasonably cool right now down there as well. It was nice and pleasant here yesterday and the few days before but cold today and it got colder as the day went by. Sarah and I got out this morning to run errands and it wasn't that bad when we left. A couple of hours later, the wind had picked up and the rain had started drizzling. By this evening it was even colder. I made homemade beef soup and we had a fire in the fireplace..I even got my valance for my dining room cut out. Colder weather is good for sewing you know!! hehehehehe!

Thats probably true Julie - I was having trouble cutting out a couple of skirts yesterday because the aircon was blowing the fabric around too much. It was about 39 C (approx. 102 F) outside. I ended up with half of my bookcase on the fabric and pattern to keep it all in place. I guess the problem with the cold (apart from all the stuff everybody already mentioned - danger, pain, inconvenience etc.) is that people stay home more - this will help you to sew more - except if the others end up staying home with you - then you get to sew less.

I truly don't mind the cold....it's 5 degrees here this morning, as long as it is dry outside. I just hate the ice & "snain" (snain = snow & rain mixed together) we have been getting.

After 4 weekends of snow, and possibly a bit more this weekend, we also had the deep freeze! We have roads that haven't been fully plowed since Xmas, and when it does thaw a bit, all that extra snow melts and covers your sidewalks due to the crown of the road. We've learned to shovel the GUTTER! Enough's enough!

I really love our winters too. I'm not sniveling, honest! We have some snow in the winter but it only snows for a day or so and then the sun is out again and it's back to the '50's and '60's usually. Our falls and springs are picture perfect. Just what they're supposed to be.

It's our 5 month summers that I can't stand! Our temps average in the '90's - 100's and it's bone, bone dry! (I'm sure Lyn can relate! and more so!) I get so sick of summer each year.

The worst part is the winds though and the fire dangers during that time of year. Our summers typically start in June and you can pretty much bet they'll go till Halloween.

Good question, I was wondering the same thing?? Never heard of that.

We did have an ice storm once years ago. So dangerous but it truly was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen once the storm finished and the sun came out!

It seems we have more ice storms that snow storms. I think our winters are mostly just plain cold rain. Jan, Feb and March. Tho March does tease us abit with warmer weather. I do remember back in '92, I think it was around then, we had a snow blizzard. I had never experienced that before. My son loved being out in it. The thing I really dislike about snow is that down here, it may snow for a short while, look lovely, sun comes out, it melts, nasty as all getout, then freeze overnight, and then it's a muddy ice sludge for days, and then it rains again.

OK, OK, I know that doesn't sound too bad to all you northeners but here in south Texas they don't have the equipment to handle this so they close everything. Plus they don't even sell ice scrappers hear.

I grew up in Illinois walking to school through snow drifts and below freezing temps. So I know what it is like to be truely cold. I just can't hack it here mainly because my house was not built for cold weather, and the kids and hubby have been home for 5 days straight now.

Questions for those who endure extreme cold in the far northern regions: At what point does cold reach its extreme? (i.e., does -45 feel colder than -20 or +1.) How warm/hot are summers? Who among us resides the farthest north?

Ice fog...

it's below freezing and for some strange reason, instead of snowing, it gets foggy, since it's below freezing the fog turns to ice on everything. When you drive it's like hitting icicles and it sticks to your windows. The windows on your house, etc..you can't see two ft in front of your face..its dangerous and pretty.

It's like thunder snow...it'll start snowing in CO and all of a sudden it starts to thunder. CO when it's snowing is very odd...

lsoutherla,
I grew up in central California and to me minus anything is COLD. Ten is Cold. Twenty is cold
I've lived here 25 years and freezing is not so bad.
It gets warm here in the summer but the humidity is HELL.
But I try not to complain about anything that doesn't have to be shoveled.
Except ice. Ice is bad but we don't get a lot like the stuff we got this week.

Well I am snivelling. I have been freezing for 2 days. The air is so moist here that with these temps I am cold to the bone. It was only 29 F here this morning (nothing like where some of you live) but it felt colder than it did the last time it was in the teens here.
I am looking forward to spring. I wish I was on a beach somewhere warm.

We had a hail storm last spring that was like nothing I have ever seen before. It was warm and muggy when it started. It fell pretty heavy at our house for 10 or 15 minutes. There was some hail on the ground when it was over but most melted within minutes. My daughter was at track practice so as soon as it was over I left to pick her up at the school. About 1/2 mile from our house it was like a line was drawn across the land where the hail was about 6 to 8 inches deep. The fog was so thick I could only see about 5 feet in front of me. It looked like a winter wonderland with white ice everywhere. I rolled the windows down and it was probably 25 degrees colder than it had been minutes before. It was for about a mile then it was suddenly completely clear again. No fog, no hail on the road. Weird.

OK so we often get to about -50C in the winter. We were there last week. I can tell you anything after about -35C or -20C with a wind is to cold to live. It is really really really cold.

In the summer we are usually a little over 20C but we can get up into the 30's.

THis week it is warmer. About -15C

The worst part of all the snow and ice this week has been the grating television reporters who get so excited about it. Just tell me if the school/office is closed and when your best guess is about when it's going to let up, then get on to the real news.

It snowed today in Dallas/Fort Worth and it was totally unpredicted by the meteorologists. I couldn't believe it when I looked out on my deck this morning.

Turned on the television and they were showing one poor reporter making snowballs on an overpass (this was 6:30 a.m.)...like that was news. Now I've worked as a journalist and done some dumb things to get a story, but no editor EVER convinced me to make a snowball on an overpass at 6:30 a.m. I did have my pride!

It IS winter people! Why are we surprised when it is cold (or indeed summer for our antipodean friends). What annoys me is the kids at school who insist 'it is freezing' and want to come in when they are not supposed to ( must be all of 10 degrees out there) What di I tell them - PUT A COAT ON!! It is not cool to wear a coat so they are there in shirt sleeves (no jumper either) - comes of being dropped off in cars. After all nowhere in my town is more than 20 mins walk away from anywhere else so they have to be driven...

Colorado winters are strange. I've also heard thunder snow. Blame this current mess on a strong El Nino.
We also have the problem of people not knowing how to drive in the stuff, and the "I have a 4WD" syndrome.
You might have a 4WD, but you don't have a 4WSTOP!
This year the snow and ice are just hanging around from the Christmas blizzard. We need a good week of Chinook winds.

Jan,

Not sure how it is where you are but my poor daughter does not have room in her locker for a coat and is not allowed to carry it to classes with her. She is one of the minority in that she really doesn't care a whole lot about what the other kids do and she walks home. I have to pick her up on cold days because she has no way to have the proper gear at school with her. This school also requires that they wear shorts and T-Shirts for PE regardless of the weather and they are not allowed to wear anything over them like long pants or jackets.

I have seen at her school those kids you are talking about who are just not dressed at all for the weather. They stand out in the cold shivering. My daughter got smart though. They allow you in the school cafeteria before school if you have homework or money to buy breakfast. She brings a book everyday and just sits in the warmth of the cafeteria reading.

Well, anyway, everyone went to their respective schools and work today. The ice is melting away. The are opening up the highways again. Should be gone altogether soon. My Roses, Petunias and fruit trees are still standing and my grass is still green but I'll have to wait a while to see if there has been any lasting damage.
Hopefully it will be another 4 years before this happens again  .

Weezy:dave:

We have a 4WD and my husband is fairly good at driving in most conditions but the one and only time we went into some serious snow... Oh boy! It is a whole new set of skills. Even a little ice or snow requires skill and thought - as I'm sure a lot of you know better than I.

In OZ there is a term - Toorak Tractor (Toorak is a fairly affluent suburb) which refers to all the 4WDs which were purchased with absolutely no intention of going offroad. Unfortunately there are a lot of people who think that 4WD function will get them out of any trouble at all. A lot of these 4WDs can also fall into the "plastic fantastic" category - not necessarily plastic - but basically a pretend 4WD instead of a decent one.

There really isn't a substitute for skilled driving in those conditions - unless it's knowing your limitations and staying home by the fire - probably what I'd end up doing.

Oklahoma City is a whole lot of fun right now. It always amazes me how people here carry on about snow. Duhhh. After all, this is not the first ice storm that has ever happened here. It happens every winter here at least once or twice. People here think because the ice has melted they can once again drive 80 miles an hour but then when they do hit a slick spot they wipe out at least a half dozen other drivers. They're predicting 5-10 inches of snow for us starting Friday evening. I can hardly wait. :whacky:

My girls always walked to school Gina, well wrapped up - we are fortunate inthat the school has lockers and pegs for everyone and it has been working hard this past 2 years to make sure of that. Sensible girl your daughter!
Ours are also have a cold weather PE kit - tracksuit trousers and a school sweatshirt to be worn over your shorts and t. Yesterday wsa the hockey festival and the teachers carried on with the games even though we had horizontal rain - eeesh. winds gusting up to 78 mph here yesterday - I saw some very surprised birds hurtteling past the lab windows at high speeds - caught by a sudden gust!

Yup - gusting up to 99 mph in places and trucks lieing down in the motorways panting like little old ladies.....

I think that is why the birds that went past my window at 40mph were so surprised - they were flying backwards.

Let's look on the bright side - after 4 months of rain they have finally taken the hosepipe ban off. It is calm and lovely today, clear cerulean skies with lilac highlights. Quite mild- 10 degrees C.

About 10 people died in the storm in the UK - 25 or so in Europe as a whole. It was scarey watching planes taking off from Heathrow - they would take off the runway and lurch sideways with severe yaw. Glad I wasn't on the plane!

It was scarey watching planes taking off from Heathrow - they would take off the runway and lurch sideways with severe yaw. Glad I wasn't on the plane!
Jan, on last night's news I saw a picture of one landing and it was swaying back and forth...and I thought the same thing!!!! Glad to hear that you're OK.
