Hello - I am from Walker, Louisiana and have been sewing on a Brother machine now for about 5 years - it is time for me to up grade and would like to purchase a sewing/embroidery machine - any suggestions? I do not want to spend over 1200.00 for one. I have thought about also getting 2 machines one sewing and one embroidery.

Hi and welcome! You will find a million answers to your question-everyone has their favorites. I am still shopping for an embroidery machine, not sure what I will get especially as I already have 3 sewing machines & a serger. Haven't looked at emboridery only machines yet and plan to do some serious shopping for embroidery or sewing/embroidery machines at the Sewing Show coming up next weekend. Keep us posted on what you decide on and how you like it.

Also try checking out the machine embroidery forum-lots of answers and opinions there.

Tcifreo, Welcome to SWN. I'm from just down the street from you in Kentwood. My Grandson went to North Corbin School before they moved out here with us. We are orginally from Chalmette but Katrina washed us out here. I know there are a lot of us Chalmations out there in Walker.

Embroidery machines are addictive I should warn you. I have two of them. I think in my honest opionion that the Singer machine that runs around 700.00 is a good one to start with. It has a 5X7 sewing field, can connect to your computer and comes with software. Singer is very user friendly. I love my Janome's for sewing but you have to buy the extra software and clothsetter in order for you to place your design in the right place which can run up into some more out of pocket money. I deal with All Brands in Metairie and Baton Rouge. At the Metairie store Stephany will do whatever she can to help answer all your questions. But both stores are good. If you go to Baton Rouge ask for Charlotte. Whatever you decide to do shop around and pick out the one that you think will be the best one for you. There is a lot of sites out there with free designs to start you off. If you have any questions or need any other help I'll be glad to IM you and give you my email address. Take your time picking on out because you will see one you like better and with that much on a purchase you want to be sure that's the best one for you.
I'm regressing back into my youth, I just have to figure out how I'm going to convience my body to come along with me.

Hi neighbor - I have a cousin that teaches at North Corbin - Thank you - I went yesterday to All Brands and spoke with Paula - she was very helpful - I am looking towards the Brother because my computer is not near where I sew and it looked like you would have to be in the same area - is that true? Does your machine have a "card slot"? I would love to have your email address and I will give you mine - do you put it in the post reply or somewhere else where everyone can't see? Also my pastors wife has been advising me about machines also - I am not sure I will need anything bigger than a 4 X 4 area - so I am torn on paying the extra cost. What is your opinion?

Hey Beach, You are right my Singer has a 6 X 9 hoop but it will embroidery a design as big as 18 X 13 with the Mulihoop function. You have to have the software to make it work but I have done several things with that feature and it's wonderful. My Janome only has a 3.5" X 4.25" sewing field.

Ttcifreo, I am in the process of emailing you now. I have the big singer the XL6000 and it has a card reader with the software that I can hook up to computer, write to the card reader with a card in there and then put the card in my machine sew out the design. Whatever you decide make sure they sit you down and show you all the features. It's hard to decide sometimes. Also, I would get the biggest sewing field you can get for the money you want to spend. Once you buy a machine you are stuck with the size you can sew out. I bought the first machine thinking that way and realized quick I wanted the bigger field. What Brother machine did Paula show you? My very first machine was a Brother PE150. It was a nice machine but I had to buy the ultimate box to get the designs from my computer to machine. There's a lot of good machines out there but what it really comes down to is your preferences of the features you like and want.
