Okay, lets qualify this from the start.... YES I AM BLONDE. But I am going to ask this question anyway. Does anyone have a ball-park figure for the metrage (or yardage) of cotton you can fit on a bobbin??? I know it depends on the thread size & bobbin size etc, which is why I was just after a guesstimate. The reason for the question is that I have just got myself a free-motion quilting foot (darning foot) and I have meander stitched a cot sized quilt. I was just trying to get an idea of how much thread I have used in the actual quilt to see about using up some of my spools of feral threads. I know I have used approx 5.5 bobbins. Cheers, Soph.

not a clue but I don't think it's a dumb question! Wonder where Tom is? He'd probably know.

If you filled all 5.5 bobbins from the same spool and the spool is now empty, see if the spool says how many yards were on the spool and divide that number by 5.5 otherwise, I have no idea how you would figure it out. Patsy Patsy

Wish it was that easy Patsy, but I am using a 1000 metre spool on top. Although at the moment that isn't even lasting me a month. I was starting to think that I might just have to buy a smaller spool of something and give it a try that way. But I am also learning that there is a wealth of knowedge when you include everyone who participates in these forums.
Cheers, Soph.

Well, lets see if this is close enough for an answer. If I use the Mettler plastic spools of thread, they have 100 meters on them, and one of them fills my bobbin with a little left over. So for a rough guess I'm going to say there is likley 80 meters of thread on my bobbin. This is regular thread. So if there is approx 80 meters of thread on your bobbin times 5.5= 440 meters, which in turn should be 1430 feet, if my math is correct. |

The problem is that I have two Bernina machines and one uses considerably more bobbin thread per bobbin than the other because of the design of the bobbin. I would imagine that the amount of thread on a specific spool from individual identical machines could vary wildly according to the adjustments of your particular machine. In addition, I'm sure that the tension adjustments on your particular machine which dictates how the top and bottom threads are spooled could dramatically effect the amount of thread two identical machines might use.

Thanks everyone for your help. I am going to use a brand new reel and work it out from there. I just know I must have been doing just a wee bit of sewing in the last 2 weeks, as I have gone through 2 * 1000m (nearly 1100 yards) of cotton. Pity the material stash seems to just keep growing though. And to think I have to pack it all up and move to another house in the next month. But you gotta love sewing! Cheers, Soph.
