Hi, Glad to meet Ya'll! me: I will be 58 years old next month. 6 grandchildren, 5 dogs, 1 donkey, 3 goats employed as a sonographer and x-ray tech. Married 39 1/2 years, love sewing but havn't done much especially not in 25 years. equipment: Janome MC 3000 (bought used) Simplicity sewing machine several years old Speedyloc serger Right now I need some tips on setting my machine to shirr a cotton knit shirt. I want to put elastic thread in the bobbin and mark the stitching lines on the fabric with dissapearing ink and stitch along the lines on the right side of the fabric. Do I need to use a zig zag stitch or straight stitch? Loosen the upper tension or the bobbin tension? Would you suggest wether to use the Simplicity or the Janome? Grandma C |

Hi Grandma C, Welcome. I see you're up to your nose in animals too. Mine are of the domestic variety but what a bunch! I suggest you post under "General Sewing" to get your questions answered. Try "Search" too. It's a terrific board with lots of helpful, knowledgable folks. Lennie |

Welcome to the group, you'll love it here. Now on to the elastic questions. This is what I did when I made my GD a blouse, Simplicity It's so easy 4925. Hand wind your bobbin with the elastic, do not put any tension on the elastic when you do this. Do not feed it thru the bobbin tension hook. You'll need to do some samples to decide what you like as far as your upper thread tensions and stitch length. The one thing I can't stress enough is anchoring the ends. Back stitching didnn't do much good, neither did stitching the ends in a seam. The best way that I found was to tie knots and put a drop of fray check on the knot to prevent it from coming undone. Thank you Brockie, I am now finished with the blouse and it isn't perfect but you helped me. Thank you. Oh! I did have to slip the elastic through the bobin tinsion thingie. Maybe that varies from machine to machine? Grandma C Ps Chloe saw the blouse today and stripped her shirt off right then and there and put it on. Her smile made all the imperfections dissapear. ps Thanks everyone for the welcome and help! |
