Hi, Glad to meet Ya'll!

me: I will be 58 years old next month.
6 grandchildren, 5 dogs, 1 donkey, 3 goats
employed as a sonographer and x-ray tech.
Married 39 1/2 years, love sewing but havn't
done much especially not in 25 years.

equipment: Janome MC 3000 (bought used)
Simplicity sewing machine several years old
Speedyloc serger

Right now I need some tips on setting my machine to shirr a cotton knit shirt. I want to put elastic thread in the bobbin and mark the stitching lines on the fabric with dissapearing ink and stitch along the lines on the right side of the fabric. Do I need to use a zig zag stitch or straight stitch? Loosen the upper tension or the bobbin tension? Would you suggest wether to use the Simplicity or the Janome?

I found my answer at http:\\sewnews.com
The gist is: hand wind bobbin' stretching the elastic thread, if sewing leightweight fabrics otherwise don't stretch as you hand wind. use as long a straight stitch as possible. The more rows stitched the more gathered the fabric becomes. The instructions said to stretch the material taut but I didn't since I was sewing on cotten knit across the stretchy width. I didn't change my bobbin tension or needle thread tension. Practice on scraps is a must so you can play with the stitch length and with stretching or not stretching the fabric.
