I have made a simple collarless jacket of fake fur for my gd. I am dissapointed in the neck edge. I put a binding of lining fabric along the neck edge and turned it under and zigzag stitched on stitch length of 4 and wisth of 5. It looks awfull. I thought the fur would ruffle up and cover the stitches. Not so! Got any suggestions.

Thank you Pam and Dorothy!!!

Hand sewing ocurred to me but I guess I'm lazy and wanted someone to tell me there was something easy like steaming and the fur would stand up or something. Shortcuts rarely pay off with quality, I know. I am so far behind on my sewing (Sis died in Dec.). Good thing this jacket is pink and not lined so Chloe will be able to enjoy it for Valentines.
Does Threads Magazine Have a web site that you can look up articles???

Threads does have a web site. They have message boards -- but not as good as these.
They also have links to the web sites of all their advertisers. Those are a lot of fun when you feel like sitting in front of the computer.

Did you brush the fur? Sometimes that lifts the fur and hides things like seams.

Glad I found this thread. I am going to start on a coat tonight that is a suede top with fur underlay. It's also going to be unlined and I was wondering about finishing off the seams, it doesn't seem to shed, or fray at all. So do I make a regular 5/8" seam and leave it unfinished, or do I do a narrower seam?? Is it going to look wierd if I don't finish off the seam edges?? And how do you finish off the edges?
I do have the Threads article, but I don't recall much about the seams.

Well, I certainly didn't read the threads article very well, it gave me lots of info about the seams. But now my question is, on a cuff, should the fur nap be running down to the hand, or up, towards the shoulder?

I would tend to run it down toward the hand.

I have done some things in "fake" sherpa and with that you don't finish the edges....be sure and tell us how you treat yours.

I work with shag fur, so I don't know if I'll be ANY help, but when the stitch will be on the outside of the garment I "part" the fabric as I do a straight stitch and brush the fur back down so you don't see any thread. Other than that I don't hem any of it (but I do costume type stuff so it's not seen up close). Even when I made bikini tops I didn't have any problems (the look of it, fraying or otherwise) with it.

I am so glad I saw this and read the posts. I have two faux fur pillows & a stole to make. When I get to the finishing I will not have to hunt for tips. Thanks to all.

I just purchased this http://www.fabric.com/apparel-fashion-fabric-faux-fur-fabric-faux-fur-wild-cats-faux-fur-fabric-hilo-bengal-tiger.aspx bengal tiger faux fur from Fabric.com. I'm hoping to use Vogue 7833http://store.sewingtoday.com/cgi-bin/voguepatterns/shop.cgi?search=7833&TI=20001&M=&pageSize=9&s.search.all.x=19&s.search.all.y=16 with Ultrasuede for the collar and down the front. I think that will help keep the fur from getting soiled where it comes in contact with your skin and can be spot cleaned occasionally. I hope to wear this a lot. The fur is what I would call "flat" and lays down. I'm hoping I don't look too much like a "big bear" in it.

You will not look like a big bear.
You will look like a lovely big tiger.
